Max Caulfield, photographer-in-residence at the prestigious Caledon University, discovers her closest new friend, Safi, dead in the snow. Murdered. Max realizes the killer will soon strike again - in both versions of reality.

I played Life is Strange as a student in 2015, I was exactly the same age as Max. This story touched me very much and remained in my memory. I haven't returned to this game since. But the trailer for the sequel on Xbox Showcase took me back to those days. After all, I literally grew up with Max, as if we were school acquaintances who hadn't seen each other for 9 years. They made a comic series that continues their story after Max saves Chloe, so that makes it seem like developers lean that way at the very least. But literally every outcome is canon, if you paid attention towards the end of the first game, she realizes she wasn’t simply reversing time, she was splitting reality every time she went “back”. Going back in time did not erase any of her choices, it just moved her to a separate reality where she made the different choice. This sequel just further confirms it with the parallel reality jumping.

Fun fact. If you read the comics there's multiple parallel timeline versions of max. The comics follow one that saved Chloe instead of letting her die. She and Chloe went traveling then eventually settled down back in arcadia bay where chloe opened a mechanic shop and I forgot what max does(well, max definitely ctraveled further than chloe... what with different parallel timelines and stuff)

Fun fact: The original game already established that there were parallel timelines and Max ended up in one of them by possessing another version of herself in Episode 4. It was a version of Max who was a popular mean girl that hung out with Victoria, Warren ended up with Stella, Chloe was in a wheelchair because her dad didn’t die, and so on.

@@sophieloph8728 @CheesyDale hello! i think i have the answer here. i can determine this is most likely a sequel to the bay ending, sacrificing chloe. here's the explanation below; (okay this started as an explanation but then i kept infodumping so i do apologize for writing an entire theory video in a comment section.) Chloe not being in this intro is a hint, sure, but lets analyse the content here as well as previous content. From a storytelling perspective and from a company perspective, it makes more sense to expand on the events after the bay since they've already covered the lives of Chloe and Max in the comic books. *Warning, there is some minor spoilers from the comics here, honestly-- its well worth the read as it gives context to the full extent of Max's powers here. $40 on Amazon or smth, 6 short comics. *Spoilers here* In the comics, we learn max does have the ability to jump between realities, but she doesnt do it so effortlessly as she does here. She needs the help from another to be able to do so, and she only does it twice. That being said, in the first comic she goes through these things called "flickers" where she is "running into her other realities" just like we see in episode 5 in lis1. The fact she is able to do it here so effortlessly *and more importantly alone* (see 1:10) tells me that she has some different rules for this version of Max. Next, as another comment-er pointed out, at 1:33 if you look at the bottom right corner during the scene she is putting stuff on the walls, there is a photo labelled "Chloe #2 _______" (unable to make out that last word as I dont have any enhance software on my computer (calling all fnaf theorists on this) ) There are 3 photos in total with labels. the other two looks like a location (town name, state) and then the other labelled one is a face with a name. This doesnt really tell me very much and it seems more like filler. What I want to focus on is this photograph that is labelled Chloe #2. The photo is of a deer/doe like we see in LIS1, specifically in episode 2 when we're in the junkyard with chloe (hence the name convention here). I went back and checked, and this is indeed the second photo we take in the presence of Chloe. The "first" one being the photo of the numbers on the bus in the junkyard (picture number 6 as determined by the achievements for the game) and the second photo being of the doe in the woods (picture number 7 of that episode) I also want to detail here that in LIS1, this doe is completely unseeable by the lense, as only Max sees this doe. When you open the journal to check, it a completely empty space. I bring this up because not only does this look like the same photograph as intended, but the doe is IN the photo- its CAPTURED. This would really not be anything noteworthy if the doe didnt appear to be hazy, flickering, almost like its not completely there just as MAX SEES, but does not actually CAPTURE. in conclusion with this photograph, we see that the doe is definitely there. Whether you believe the doe to be Rachel (or if the butterfly is Rachel, and how Sam tells us our spirit animal is a doe while Rachel's almost fit better with the butterfly-- but max ends up getting a tattoo of a blue butterfly on her wrist in the comics) is not really* important. its WEIRD this doe is captured, in the photograph, hazy. This almost tells me a wink and a nod, to an event that would soon to have never existed in the bay ending- thus Rachel never got justice the way the doe intended in the bay ending (if she did at all) Okay, so the presence of this photograph brings up a main issue with the theory this is; how can the photograph exist if it didnt happen, in the reality Max is living in? I have solutions that make this solveable. -We learn in the game max's inventory does not change even if she does back in time. This being said, includes her journal. At the end of LIS1, there is THE decision. What some people miss (me until it was pointed out to me about 3 months ago) is you can actually open the journal during that cutscene after you make the decision, thus proving the journal exists no matter which reality max chooses. (go back and read those journal entries, specifically the one after choosing to sacrifice chloe its honestly so so upsetting). max takes her journal no matter which ending she chooses and thus can keep her photographs from her journal. -"okay" i hear you say "the journal is just our way to convey to the player max's character and keep track of ourselves. we shouldnt canon that too easily". if that doesnt convince you (another spoiler warning for the comics) max can actually take photographs with her through realities like we see in the comics. I want to go back and talk about Max's tattoo. I just rewatched the trailer, and it seems she is always wearing a long sleeve so i cannot actually confirm- but we'll know the second which reality this is in if they show her tattoo or not. Okay i've ignored them long enough, lets talk about the double moons at 1:25 which is obviously a throwback to episode 4 during the vortex party the double moons. honestly, this one stumps me for a while because i cannot tell you what specifically causes the moons. I read this reddit thread that was proven to be right on their theory about the double moons www.reddit.com/r/lifeisstrange/comments/3k8eih/ep4_spoilers_the_double_moon/ In short; the double moons represents two realities colliding with each other. The double moon goes away after max convinces chloe to go home from the vortex club to stay safe from jefferson (honestly read the reddit thread it explains it so much better than me). "the moon disappears since this CHOICE is not repeated" thus separating the two realities from colliding with each other.(another person also says this is why nathan's truck is now green instead of red in that episode, because its from a different reality which makes total sense in episode 5) We actually see this in the COMICS AS WELL (beginning to feel how important these are for theory-crafting?). spoilers ONCE AGAIN , in the comics we become friends with this person who is able to use her intuition to see into different realities (max actually has this ability in this trailer, see 0:52 where she sees fades of different realities just as the character in the comic can (and also she can hear Safi's voice). In conclusion: I feel I can confidently say this is from the Bay Ending based on my explanation above with my infodump and fullblown analysis of the trailer. To quote the writers of the comics themselves; "...if max didnt allow for the original timeline - in which Chloe died of a gunshot wound - to play out. in one sequence of events, Max chose to save Chloe's life, sacrificing Arcadia Bay. **And in a multiverse of infinite possibilities, this is one version of what happened next..."** I think fanfiction deserves a small shout here because they almost confirm any written story of what happened next is true. The max we see here might not be the max we fell in love with, but that doesnt mean we cant fall in love with another max again. One last spoiler for the comics; max shifts to a reality where chloe is happy, with somebody else (guess who:) but is not her chloe she fell in love with. We are witnessing another version of events here. it looks like Max ultimately decided to stay in Arcadia bay seeing how we see blackwell academy (honestly how is this school still open). which almost says how the prescotts are still in power and have money which only really happens in the bay ending (see comics for more details). Honestly? Not continuing Chloe and Max's story since that was concluded in the comics is unfortunately, the right move to do from a storytelling perspective here. However, what we learned from 2015 in episode 5, max has different versions she's left behind. This is one of them. Small prediction: i bet this is going to be a game that hurts, and im sure we're going to see chloe. Max has broken reality before in ep 5 of lis1, i'm sure something similar is going to happen again here as well. Buckle in :)

If Chloe is dead, that means that Max lived through the ENTIRETY of OG LIS and by the end chose to rewind time, letting Chloe get shot by Nathan and die. She retains these memories and made this choice to protect everyone in Arcadia Bay. That's fine no one is arguing. THE ISSUE IS: What makes this Safi lady different? How is this lady worth using her power again exactly??? With how everything went HORRIBLY wrong in the first one, why would she deem Safi more deserving than Chloe??? It seems like Max is REGRESSING as a character? Like is it just me or does this whole storyline have no reason to be here other than "It's max again"? It's giving "Rings of Power" personally :/

The games even hinted at this with the double moons in LiS 1 and we can see the double moons again. The discourse may have been that using her powers at all created two timelines, I wouldn't be surprised if both timelines were the Bay and Bae decisions. So you have to jump between those two timelines, but Max is oblivious for the time being that these are the two timelines she is jumping between. Even if Max chose to not save Chloe or not save Arcadia Bay, those timelines don't just cease to exist. They will forever be split, one where she created a ton of Chaos and time anomalies, the other where she goes into the past and chooses to not save Chloe creating a bootstrap paradox. The longer Max lives, the stronger her connection and powers will grow between these timelines because she is the sole catalyst of the split branch. While there's another mystery plot, I think this game may involve Max having to weave together the timelines or leave them as they are. Just like an actual detective, you can weave together and solve a case, or see the problems solving it would cause and decide to leave it all together. But the time powers implication may be that Max may realize she can't turn off her powers and if she does, both timelines end. In one timeline she chose to actively not use powers and vowed to never use them because of a bootstrap paradox, the other would be her actively using her powers and then choosing to stop.
