Life of a Woodsman - Fried Grouse and Potatoes

Spending more time hunting has finally paid off. I was able to harvest a Ruffed Grouse that I fried up alongside a potato to enjoy as my supper. This was a very easy meal to make that didn't require a whole lot of ingredients but the final result was incredible. Meals like this are such a blessing to have at camp. Eating meals that are filling and also enjoyable to eat give you such a boost, not just with the energy they provide but they also go a long way in boosting morale. This meal certainly was a huge boost for me and I'm hoping I can harvest another grouse soon so I can make it again.
Thank you to everyone who watches!

Awesome job on this meal! One tip i might add for you to try: keep the grouse legs, heart, gizzard, and liver. Gizzard is pretty easy to clean on them, and a fair addition of meat. All you have to do with the liver is find and remove the small green bile sac.

Glad you mentioned it, does feel like he is not getting everything out of the grouse that he could. Maybe just not filming it, but even with the first bird I thought he was missing out on a few choice pieces of edible meat. Seems a same to put that effort into hunting then not get everything food wise you can out of it.

I always enjoy your videos. Your calm demeanor and pleasant spirit help to calm me after watching the news, which is often bad. I thank you for providing us with a glimpse into your life. About this video, those of us in the Southern U.S. love ranch dressing. I especially like it on chicken so that is what I would have brought on a camp out like yours. BBQ sauce is great too. Hello from Oklahoma! The Old River Rat here. Good Video! I am surprised as handy as you are with wood work, you haven't made yourself a nice cutting board. That poor aluminum plate is catching hell. I've never heard of a place where you can't hunt squirrels. We call them "tree rats" here and they are very prolific, both the fox squirrels and the greys. Thanks for all you do! God Bless!
@KuskBushcraft
@KuskBushcraft 6 ай бұрын
Looking back at it I definitely should've packed or made a cutting board. My aluminum plate and stainless pan got roughed up pretty good. I've learned from my mistake and I will certainly keep a cutting board in my kit from now on. The squirrels in this area are Red Squirrels and they are a fur-bearing animal which means that their fur is worth money. Due to this the harvest of these animals is regulated to ensure they are not over-harvested. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Thanks for watching and God bless!

Love that you gave respect to the grouse. Can one get an exemption (e.g. to hunt grouse, squirrel, etc. anytime) to allow one to live off the land in Alberta? Also, what about predators? What do you do to secure your food?
@KuskBushcraft
@KuskBushcraft 6 ай бұрын
I've never looked into it...but I can't say I've ever heard of anything like that. I just follow the regulations and stick to the legal hunting/trapping seasons. Predators in this area are quite timid towards humans and I've never had any issues with them. I do carry bear spray and a rifle for protection just in case anything ever happened. On this trip the temperatures were staying quite cool so I didn't have any issues keeping meat for a few days. Later in this series I will be showing some meat preservation techniques though. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching.

So I think that your morale is boosted automatically when your stomach experiences such a blessing. Full tummy = morale boost. Energy boost = morale boost. Incredibly, we can't disconnect our body from our souls - our whole being is interwoven and one thing. It is separately UNNATURALLY AT DEATH. But thankfully, the Christ has overcome the grave for all those who put their trust in Him. I'm an old guy now, been experiencing this life for quite some time. Just saying. Ha, what a great experience! Oh man! Mouth watering, I could almost taste it! I'm figuring you made that cooking spatula, right? Yeah, I would do the rough outback just for a taste of this wild grouse. Yummy I bet. It's fun watching you enjoy it and hoping for a repeat. Thanks Kurt.
