Be sure to double-check on Tercero's research. A lot of people lie about sex, and a lot of anthropologists soak up those lies. Giddy Samoan teen girls told lots of lies to Margaret Mead, told her they had had many lovers, and she wrote that homosexualiy (lesbian) and adultery were no big deal. When Samoan students finally made it to Columbia University, they were shocked at the stories told. Homosexuality was frowned upon in Samoa as in elsewhere, and adultery carried a 2-year prison sentence.

They do nothing, stay at home all day, they go to work but it's not like they interact with a whole lot of people where they work, they don't talk much etc. Their lives consist of essentially 2 spaces they will go back and forth from. Man, I had to live this life for a very short time. Moved back to my parents country and to avoid being kidnapped I was basically locked in the upper floor of the house when my dad was out. There were a few rooms and a huge outdoor lanai with a peacock so I wasn't like stuck in a tiny room. Two of the ladies that worked in the house would bring me food and collect and drop off my laundry... No internet or television and just a case full of books that I burned through immediately. Occasionally I would be able to have one of the ladies walk me to an Internet cafe like once a week for like 30 min. 🥲 It was a very empty and strange type of depression.

@@Linfamy Haiti in the early 2000's. Most people just see the media pics of the extremely impoverished unfortunately. For those who have political standing, international money or are high ranked religious leaders life can be quite comfortable or even extravagant. If I wasn't in the main house in the city generally I got a little more freedom but couldn't be alone and people couldn't just come up and talk to me. A random guy snuck onto the property while I was swimming at the beach once and just stared at me from the pier... the image of him getting dragged away is still burned in my mind 😨 Lmao, sorry for the long story 😅

Just a tiny correction: though there are indeed derogatory parts of suttas about women (which researchers and monks consider later additions and therefore not trustworthy) it's not that a woman has to be reborn as a man to become enlightened, she still can and there ares some suttas that show some examples of enlightened women teaching lessons to men, but she couldn't become a Buda. A Buda is someone who has reached enlightenment without having any contact with the teachings through someone else, but he is still an enlightened being, who we call as "arahants". Arahants are enlightened beings, they have reached the peak of the practice as a buddhist; that's why a Buddha is also called an "arahant" in the suttas. Now, both have the same level of enlightenment; the only difference between them is that a Buda becomes the leader of the Sangha. And because of that you can see why in a single sutta some chauvinist monks made that rule of women having to be reborn as a man to become a Buda: becoming one would mean controlling the whole buddhist community, which would certainly be loads of power for a female (and that's why there is not an actual global leader in buddhism like the Pope: because there is no Buda yet). And when I mean 1 sutta, is indeed 1 (which makes even more suspicious) considering there are tons of them out there; some say around 38.000 even. Therefore both men and women can reach enlightenment and Nibbana, the ultimate objective of a buddhist. And in the case of a Buddha in my opinion, of course she can be a female. Even Dalai Lama said if he could, he would certainly be reborn as a female.

"Tale of Genji" (Genji Monogatari) is allegedly the first Japanese novel, written by lady-in-waiting Murasaki Shikibu in the early years of the 11th century. The Tale of Genji also tells how women as they got older were more and more bored because fewer men came to visit them. At some point in their life they could either throw themselves in the sea or go to a monastery. Lower class woman could work and raise their children. The idea of the “honeymoon” period of a marriage was to get your virgin wife pregnant as fast as possible before she could even think about straying. Heck, in the Bible, men were even given a year off military service to “make their wives happy” and insure their lineage.

From what I know as a Japanese person, men of the heian ages got to marry many girls. Like that was publicly normal. Some had like legit fifteen or something I think. As far as I know, the wives basically had this ranking where the first person who married to the man was the official first wife, then the second wife, third wife, and so on. The earlier you were married, the more power you get. Now wives at that age had a huge rivalry, which was who can make the man come to them at night and who’s child will be man’s successor. Men who had many wives could get to choose who they wanted to sleep with, and could change each night. All wives tried to have more personality, more beauty, more wealth to get their husbands to come to them. This is another way how the girl’s family ties in. If you’re a girl from a wealthy family, they may send you gifts, more beautiful clothing (btw purple was the best color I think), that kind of things. Also, when the wife gets a child, they hoped it was a boy: a boy may be the husband’s successor. So even if you were the first wife if you only had girls and the second wife gave birth to a guy the second wife’s boy will be successor. But, if you were married to the man last but you were his favorite wife, there was a chance your son could become successor or the right hand man. Women communicated to others through poems. This was a huge thing back then, because your basically writing a love letter to someone you never met. The guy is always the first to write a letter to the girl, and the girl will have to reply with wit. Either accepting the flattery and flirting back or rejecting the guy, the girl had to think cleverly, have her way with words, and had to have perfect hand writing. The type of paper they wrote the poem on was also another thing the guys looked at - good paper, wealthy, perhaps cares about you. Family money was used like this for girls. Also, because women were supposed to always be behind the curtain, the relationships between women were strong strong bonds. Twenty maids, a person who gave you their milk when you were a baby (not your mother), your tutor, etc will be with you most of the time, just chatting. The two most famous books written in this era is called the makuranosoushi and genjimonogatari, both written by tutors of a wealthy woman who both married the same guy. The two tutors were also said to be rivals of their own. Anyway, the first one is a bunch of small essays about everyday life in the castle and it’s hilarious. For a young girl, becoming a maid or tutor or playmate for a wealthy girl gave you dreams. You came to the city, have freedom but still be kind of part of a wealthy family. Some say the maids once took home a hot guy and hid him in a casket since it was supposed to be all girls and wanted to chat and have some fun, but the guy was caught and thrown out of the huge home. Enough rambling lol hope these weird info help in any way. I can give more if anyone wants some! Also pls tell me if some of my info is wrong, most of this is memory based from my history classes in the last three years and what my mother taught me

Linfamy thx!!!!! Ok I have another fact: Women could get outside of their house, but had to stay hidden within their carriage where they had another five or so maids. The curtain used for the carriage, as well as the curtains used at home so to not meet a man face to face, was called a misu and pretty beneficial for the women. From one side - women side - they could see the other side through the cracks of the curtain, but the men on the other side couldn’t see the inside by how the misu was made.

Slight correction: Sei Shonagon and Murasaki Shikibu served different ladies (Empress Sadako and Akiko) who were competing for the title of Empress Consort. Their rivalry was intense with Sei Shonagon writing disparaging remarks about Murasaki Shikibu's late husband and Murasaki Shikibu's hilarious but scathing remark about Sei Shonagon's writing (Murasaki Shikibu had the last laugh. Akiko became Empress Consort) Plus Murasaki Shikibu's writings about Minister Michinaga (Father of Akilo looks like a complaint at first but deeper readings reveals them to be her boasts about the most powerful man of Heian-era Japan simping for her.

She will check up on me 3 or more times during the night , if I go out it's only if she's with me and she feels like it , and only to places she wants to go. I can't do anything , which to some people will probs sound like haven but let me tell you after a while it gets old having to ask permission to do basically any and everything . The no contact with the outside would thing also sucks balls. Man am I glad for the internet if not I really would have ZERO contact for months and months at a time.

@@Linfamy you don't sit down and talk with an Asian mom dude. Espically not a crazy one like mine. The first thing she will do is call me crazy , then say I'm acting stupid again, how I never think before doing things , don't waste her time etc etc and then she's going to say all sorts of unpleasant things to start a fight. It's been like this since I was a wee lil thing , I don't think she even realize half the shit she sprout out of habit these days As for why I need to stay with her when my kid was born she didn't want people back home in my country to know I got married and had a kid but our main family have ties with the people in the government system ( one used to work in the system until they retired at old age with a high position ) . Once I go register all the rest of the family would have found out via those connections so to prevent that she forced me to make my baby take her father's citizenship. Which is cool and all BUT it basically created a situation where the baby and I cannot stay together in any same country without applying for a visa every month and paying heavy fees. Fees I can't afford to pay since I sure as hell ain't rich . She can't stay with her dad either because he is in the army 24/7 in Singapore ( he's a PR) me as the main and only care giver cannot stay with the baby unless we keep hopping countries back and forth - staying at Burma house two months then going to Singapore for two months ..repeat cycle. Until we can apply for a more permanent solution we are stuck with this expensive and seriously annoying situation , all because our mother was paranoid about what judgemental people would say. Those same people literally could not give less of a fuck about us even if we are from the same family since we are less well to do than them and some even actively plots against us. Basically I got caught in the middle of the older generation's plotting and scheming eachother .

Jade Nguyen it would not go the way you expect it will, first women weren’t really highly respected back in that time period especially when it came to leading an army so there is no guarantee that your men would even be willing to follow you as soldiers, second where would you get the money and men to raise, arm and drill an army big enough to forge your supposed empire, like a woman of this time period wouldn’t have the wealth to feed, train and arm an army (armies are very expensive to raise and maintain) and she wouldn’t have enough men directly under her command that she could press into service, her husband on the other hand likely had a much much larger pool of peasants to impress into service in his army as levies, a woman of the Heian period clearly wouldn’t have enough men to make any force worth a damn. In the end I like your ambition but it is way too unrealistic, it would really only have any chance of working if you were a time travel from the future and/or you were male.

Interesting to think that we have boredom to thank for classics like the Tale of Genji.

I've underestimated boredom, maybe it's a powerful force. A lot of KZbin videos are created because people are bored, are they not?

Busy people with lots of important things to occupy their minds do not create much by way of art. Almost all cultural enrichment grows from bored rich people, and apparently Heian Japan was *overflowing* with bored rich women.

To think that princesses, empresses and high Ranking women lived such lives well from where I come it is often said the more you chain a dog the more violent it gets and the more uncontrolled it gets when it is unleashed here it is used for children and teens but I see it implying in this case aswell.

@Michal Blaszczak They're talking about high ranking women. High ranking men weren't disposable cannon fodder either, they have lower ranking soldiers for that.

@Deserve Not DesireThere are pros and cons to being a lower ranking woman Vs a lower ranking man. Low ranking men could be forced into the army and be used as cannon fodder. As for low ranking women they were considered more valuable than men but also inferior. So men were seen as less valuable and more disposable, but they also had more authority within their respective community. Low ranking women could climb the social ladder quickly by catching the eye of a high ranking man, but they would end up in a sort of gilded cage (which is better than life as a low ranking woman, but still no authority). Low ranking men could climb the social ladder by involving themselves in government but that still didn't protect them from being used as cannon fodder. It's highly unlikely that a low ranking man would end up as a high ranking one, for women who were beautiful and had their wits about them it was more likely. If a low ranking man wanted to climb the social ladder and be safer during a war they could try to get a position for the government as a scribe/equivalent of cushy office job. But in order to do that they needed to be able to read and write and catch the eye of someone who is hiring. I don't know about the literacy statistics within lower ranking men during the Heian period though. What you would rather choose depends on what you think is more important. Some people would rather die free than be in a gilded cage. Best position to be in those times imo is a man at the top, but not the very top since people are always trying to murder the king/emperor. As for what I would choose between low ranking man Vs low ranking woman I do not know. It may depend on the specific circumstances. Both suck.

True, oh well .... I'm sure the current modern Japanese inherited their tendency to cheat from their ancestors. I mean, loooots of celebrities are caught cheating and the common people do it a lot, too.

I love these little videos about Japanese history. I'm from Japan but it's still good to be reminded of our country's life stories, its culture then and now, the changes that happened through the centuries. I now live in Europe so it's a great way to introduce people from various European countries to what it was like to live in Japan against the backdrop of European history. one more reason why all of those behaviours did not last, since it was absolutly not healthy for any human to live like that, just imagine how disgusting it must be to know that you wife or husban has been sleeping around before they married you and they keep on doing it even after marrying you, no wonder japanese men, arent interested in marriage and stuff like that anymore
