Don't know if anyone else has said it but this is so awesome how the jyutpin is included for such native level conversation. Someone must have worked really hard to do that so shout out to them!

Right? I agree. As a native Cantonese speaker, I never used or saw jyutping (粵拼) until I was learning Mandarin on my own in my high school years. And I can see that jyutping is more complicated than regular pinyin ((漢語)拼音) in Mandarin.

I used to date someone with HK roots for a while, and got familiar with the sounds of the Cantonese language through her family. I barely understand any word but generally loved the sound of it and it still remains very distinctive to my ears. I can't tell exactly what makes me love it, but I think I like the relatively "hard" sounds (compared to Mandarin for example) and tonal languages in general fascinate me because that concept isn't a core feature of the languages I've learnt.

Cantonese is the most difficult language in Asia.

It's not hard for Hong Kong Chinese to learn or for non-Chinese born and raised in Hong Kong, they just acquire it naturally! Hard to learn as a second language for sure

It's subjective. For East Asians Arabic/Hebrew are definitely harder. I am native in Cantonese and speak Cantonese, Mandarin, English, German, Russian, Japanese and learned/am learning Italian, French, Spanish, Arabic, Latin and Ukrainian.

I'll help you out. (Jyutping to Yale) Initials: z becomes j c becomes ch j becomes y (n might sometimes become l) Finals: -aa becomes -a -oe becomes -eu -oek becomes -euk -oeng becomes -eung -eoi becomes -eui -eon becomes -eun -eot becomes -eut Other Cases: jyu, jyun, and jyut lose the j when converting to Yale. Everything else should be the same. Do you also need tones?

I notice that the typeface in the subtitles of earlier Easy Cantonese is in Ming typeface (明體) while more recent ones are in Gothic type (黑體), the East Asian version of sans serif. Why the change?

It signifies which intonation you should use

They are tone numbers. Recommend you search up “jyutping tones” to learn them.

This is a cool feature of these videos - they tell you which tone you need to use for each syllable; the tone is an intrinsic part of the language, each number identifies an individual tone
