The lack of smell is caused by a lack of lipids/proteins being broken down in the water, meaning that the organisms in the container assimilated what little biological matter there was and it is the same matter being circulated among stable populations. In short, there is not enough excess biological matter to produce the waste necessary for funky smells. The salty "ocean" smell is actually the smell of bi-products made by phytoplankton, so that the lack thereof is probably the reason you can't smell the sea. It's, overall, caused by the same thing I stated above. Think of it like a dead animal in a pond. It'll be stinky as it decays, but eventually it will have been assimilated by the organisms of the pond and no more excess biological material will be available to produce odors.

We're currently in lockdown for COVID-19 here in California, but we're able to go out and about a bit. We got some runoff water from the local hills and sealed it up. I noticed some life the next day, which turned out to be mosquito larva that subsequently hatched. Waiting to see what else will happen. Keep up the good work.

I recently found your website and I'm totally new to the concept of closed ecosphere's or ecosystems. I've also noticed that there is very limited stuff on the internet that pertains to this little Hobby. You should consider writing a book on the subject everything from building it to even reference of the different species or even species based on different places. perhaps something geared more towards children or adolescents from grade school into High School. You seem to have quite a bit of knowledge on many of the species in your ecosystem. I can see this becoming a hit in science classes. I'm 42 years old and I never imagined that these ecosystems could be so enjoyable. Just thought I'd give you a food for thought. Blessed Be.

No shame, it's fun that we're all learning together. Everyone usually just wants to give the answers because they're so clever (I think I'm not so different), but I think what's more important than knowing is the journey to discovering. That's powerful. The acquisition of knowledge. I'm really loving the microscope shots and your skills with it are getting better...maybe just make sure your phone is anchored better LOL! Funny as usual.

The death of all of the Brine Shrimp would probably be because that when a large amount of algae population die, the process of their decomposition uses oxygen which can limit how much life there could exist (I searched this up for more information after hearing something in the past about algae consuming oxygen). There's also something about algal blooms, in which apparently the more algae and plants grow, others die.

Hey! i think I found the name/lead of the bacteria in your ecosphere. It looks like it belongs to the Planctomycetes (phylum) and (maybe?) Phycisphaerae(class) as those are aquatic bacteria and found in brackish water. They have a tip of a thin cylindrical extension from the cell body just like I saw in your video (clearly visible at 6:30) with a spherical like body.
