Lol. About your carbs. I have a 94 VFR and two weeks ago it stopped wanting to idle. I was very concerned about dumping a ton of money on paying a shop to figure out what's wrong and fix it. Looked up a video on what's involved with pulling the carbs and realized it wasn't a big deal. The following week I pulled the carbs off popped each bowl off and blew out the pilot jet on each carb then put everything back together. Had zero issues with getting the carbs back on the heads. Been riding with zero issues for a couple weeks since. The important thing I want to point out here. Every newer vehicle I owned that were fuel injected has always cost me a couple hundred bucks because some sensor went bad. My carb starts having a problem and I was still able to ride it home and fix it without needing a trailer. And it only cost me time. Now I've got zero hangups with pulling my carbs if anything else goes wrong.

Its a good idea to heat up the oil before going anywhere in any vehicle, lubrication with cold oil is not very good as it tend to "stick" and not "splash" where its suppose to splash 🙂 but what do i know im only a mechanic. I think that sums it up pretty well. After 28 years on the road there's still not much to fault a 1992 VFR on! I've owned a '93 VFR for the last 10 years, and previously owned a '90 for a few years. I replaced the reg / rec unit on both and didn't have a problem after that. I also replaced the original rotting downpipes with stainless steel (secondhand sets sourced for both bikes) which is basically a once-in-a-lifetime 'fit and forget' job. With the minimum of care and attention these bikes will just keep going on and on. If I was to add a 'dislike' it would be for the suspension, rear shock in particular which would benefit from an aftermarket replacement (if you can still find one) as the original is under-damped, particularly for two-up riding. That said, mine is still running a stock shock after all these years so it's not bad by any means. My riding friends keep trying to get me to buy something newer, but, even putting finances aside, I still can't justify it as the VFR still does everything I ask of it (and I keep up with their newer shinier bikes just fine!).

People like Maxton in UK will sell you a replacement but it's not cheap (circa £1000 I think) but I also found a youtube video about converting a more modern Kawazaki shock (I think it was) to fit a VFR.

I bought mine a year ago, and I plan to ride her as long as possible. Despite the high mileage (over 100k km's) she still looks immaculate, and all the controls still work smoothly, down to the throttle and choke cables. It's a very well made bike that has a premium feel to it, despite being 'just an old ricer'. The off-beat V4 and the whine/roar of the cam sprocket drive gives it character. The carbs in mine were all gummed up with fuel residue when I got her - she was coughing and jerking on partial throttle, but on WOT the power delivery was clean and healthy, so I pulled the trigger, knowing I had to fully disassemble and overhaul the carbs. Luckily a company makes new viton o-rings and gaskets that are compatible with today's ethanol-spiked fuels. The carb diaphragms can also be sourced new, but mine were still pliable and in working order. The power delivery is so smooth and refined, and the ride is so reassuring and stable, it makes you relax and just enjoy. Honda nailed it with this bike back then.

Mine is from 1990, have owned it for 15 years. Have been stranded twice in this time, owing to the regulator, which is prone to overheating. I'm told you can fix this by buying a non-standard part, which is finned, so as to provide cooling. Agree that the bike is a bit heavy. Well balanced when on the move, but riding in the city during rush hour is a pain! Plus points - acceleration equals most other bikes. Top speed 150 mph - never had the balls to try it, but it should be enough for anyone!

I very much agree to your list provided. I’ve been very impressed with mine and wouldn’t trade it for a thing. I bought a showroom condition 93 with 6,100 miles on it and have only needed to replace the rectifier and a coolant line. Unfortunately on the 3rd of July a few years ago I heard some ruckus outside my house and witnessed 2 drunk guys push my bike over and caused a good amount of damage to my fairings, I then went outside to confront them and wait for the police and long story short I had been the one to get in trouble and they were sent home. I was left with nothing but a messed up VFR and quite the police report(fortunately no ticket or jail) and unfortunately the police couldn’t justify they had pushed my bike over being parked on a hill. 3 weeks later with my fantastic luck, I was on my way out of my house to go to work and found my VFR had been run over in its parking spot, again I was lucky enough that only the fairings took a significant amount of damage and had a messed up handlebar as well as some minor damage to the fuel tank. All in all my VFR has held up phenomenal and really only need to replace the fork seals and fairings, I guess this falls under the age category that parts are hard to find and very expensive. My bike has the rare pearl white fairings which if I ever see on the market cost nearly as much as I’ve paid for the bike if in “good condition”. The experience I’ve had with this bike has been amazing, I’ve had nothing but bad luck with everything else that doesn’t actually have to do with the bike including buying it with a fake title and contacting a title specialist from state patrol(the only one in my state) and took a year and 2 months to actually resolve. Despite being an automotive technician for the last 9 years my only problem I’ve really had is finding someone to replace my fork seals as I’ve seen it is one of the only jobs I haven’t wanted to take on. Other than my unbelievable bad luck, I couldn’t recommend a gen 3 VFR 750 anymore.

What would I add? 1. Handling/steering I dunno how many other bikes you've ridden, but the VFR is the most fun bike I've ever ridden in the twisties. Yes, it's heavy. The V4 makes it top heavy, in particular. But the steering is super stable when under the slightest bit of throttle. If you're under any maintenance throttle, you get to throw this bike into freefall, then catch it at the desired lean angle. Modern sportbikes are just boring in comparison; push left go left; push more left, go more left. Absolutely boring. In a corner, this 3rd gen model wants to hold its line, and it needs a bit of coaxing to change. On a modern sportbike you just gradually change pressure on the bars, and bam, you change your line. Actually, you turn your head or scratch your ass, and bam the bike changes line. You think the wrong thought, and the bike changes line. It's very easy to change the line on a modern sportbike. The VFR has a strange old school way of being super stable in a lean. To make it change line, you might find it to be a "whale", but it's more the steering geometry than the weight, IMO. When you learn to finesse it, it's magical. It tends to ignore half-ass, ambivalent commands. To make it follow the exact line you want and to change course instantly, you need to use "micro-twitches" to the bars, not gradual or lazy changes in pressure. Riding this VFR is like leading a dance partner. Know how to command it, and it will do exactly what you want, exactly when you want. Nothing more, and nothing less.

I owned one of these over 30 years ago in 91. Not only was it light years ahead my cb 550 and gs850, but it got better gas mileage. The thing would cruise all day at 125 mph. If I was looking for an older street bike, this is what I'd get.

Keep the battery on a trickle charger. The generators are only to maintain voltage in use. Get a battery tester, it's the best value piece of kit next to a charger. Saves replacement of a perfectly good battery just because the contacts needed cleaning. Keep it shiny side up. I love my 25 year old Low rider because there's always something needs fixing, it's light and nimble and only has one carburettor. I'd like a VFR but my hallway isn't big enough for two bikes.

Good summing up of a great bike. I have a 96 Vfr. I bought it 2 years ago with 46k hard miles behind it. It came with a high level stainless exhaust, new rectifier and fitted with CBR600/ Firestorm forks and brakes. Since then I have added 10k to the clock and have loved it. Top 3 likes. 1. The engine. Love the noise, love the torquey performance and stepless powerband, love the way it can be a relaxed and quiet tourer one minute and a screaming banshee the next - and still it gets 200miles out of a tank! 2. Comfort. I have spent the best part of 12 hours a day in the saddle on windy roads and still been comfortable enough to enjoy the ride. 3. Cost of ownership. These bikes are an absolute bargain. And here in UK they were so popular in 1990s there are loads on the second hand market many of which have been carefully stored in garages and are in great condition. It also means that most second hand spares are easy to come by, but as you said, overall they are a paragon of reliability. Dislikes 1. Weight. They are heavy to manhandle but as you mention, that does mean they are amazingly stable and reassuring on the road at speed and in wind. 2. If they fall over they break their fairings. I guess this is common for all faired bikes! I have dropped mine twice, once on an icey road and once a very strong wind blew it off its side stand. Luckily second hand fairings were available on both occasions. 3. I am struggling here. Umm.......

Thanks for your input! I totally agree with all your points, ESPECIALLY the part about the fairings. I meant to include that in my part about age since it’s so hard to find fairings and other parts, but it slipped my mind while filming. The reg/rec issue to be honest is frankly only an irritation. I've got a battery status monitor wired into mine, if the reg fails I get a flashing light top warn me. Replacing it then is a 10 minute job on the side of the road. But the newer reg/recs don't have quite the same failure rate as the old ones. The old ones failed due to overheating. Worst case scenario is a short through the failed reg/rec in which case it's the same time to repair with the addition of swapping the fuse for a spare.

Well I'm not a Millennial by any stretch of the imagination and I'd STILL rather be riding than wrenching so I don't blame you for that thus why I buy only the big four. But as for as a bike with a stigma or know problem I feel ya. The Suzuki M109R Boss is a bike I SOOOO want to buy but it has a second gear fail stigma that prevents me so I can see how that steers people away.

I have the exact same bike color its a 1993 with 16k on it, my first bike. I have a shorty that sound awesome but stains my wheel with products of combustion. I wish I had frame sliders, and the ability to put the bike up on stands to service it. What year VFR 800 are your mirrors?

E have a 96 vfr and i'm looking to swap my mirrors for ages. Can you tell me the specific model of vfr you got them from? I've been told that the driling of the newers is narrower and it does not fit

The V4 engine has no primary balance problem only a boxer motor could compare to it .

I saw that you watched my other video and found out what it’s called! Glad you like it, it’s definitely the best sounding exhaust for a VFR in my opinion!

Ok video- let me help. Don't molest a RC36. Add a slip is fine. The rectifier is $20 and harness is $10. The downside isn't age- it's lack of ebay bodywork like a new bike -$500 will fair a CBR. VFR a few grand will get ya California racing glass that makes em' one at a time. The motor is Honda Racing Company's 1983-1997 lineage. CB can't say that. No other company makes anything like it. Endorsed by Mr Honda . Does this help?

Do you find this to be pretty hot between your legs when you ride?? No one mentioned that to me at all before I bought my 91 and I'm pretty surprised by it...
@reneverheij69383 жыл бұрын
For third HATE point you should've referred to the original look which you did not like. Not a technical problem you don't even have. Also it's a sport touring bike, one of the lightest ones out there so blaming it for not being a sport bike is not a disadvantage of the bike per se.

How did you do the rear blinker mod? I just got a white '93 and would like to do the same thing.
@LifeOfBurch4 жыл бұрын
So the empty turn signal housings on the sides of the tail light (where my blinkers are now) actually already have the proper mounting hole to just take the light from the funky stock bracket and put it into the empty housing. If that makes sense. Not sure why they came with the blinkers sticking out from the side when the bike is literally already set up to have the blinkers in a different spot. Just gotta remove the ugly stock bracket and move the bulb to the new spot. Hope that helps!

@@LifeOfBurch Yes, makes perfect sense! Thanks for that.

@@LifeOfBurch I believe it was an old dot regulation or something that they didn't have in Japan. For example my 89 vtr 250 had the same style turn signals sticking out but you could order the Japanese housing with them built into the sides

You shouldn't warm up any bike. About 30 seconds after you start it you should take off and ride it sort of easy for a little while. But for God's sake don't let it quote warm up sitting still.
@joelbrittenour81973 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I let mine warm up a few minutes especially if it's cold out.
