Now that the cold snap is over, let's insulate the cabin! Timing...
In this episode, we'll insulate the vaulted ceiling in the off grid Spur Cabin. It's not one of my most favorite things in the world to do, especially atop a ladder, but hey, it's in a cabin in the middle of nowhere... I'll take it!
While most would think such a task unworthy of watching, in this fast-paced video, I'm confident you'll be entertained AND informed.
The big question of the episode: Do you typically read KZbin video descriptions? I ask the same question in the video as well, so drop me a quick yes or no. You may be reading it NOW, but I would never know.
Thanks for your input, as always, and thanks for watching ‪@LifeontheMoose‬ !!

Caveat: You are building a cabin. Flange is no big deal. Having said that, your viewers and you may (or may not) be interested to know what the actual function of the flange is. "paper-backed" fiberglass serves two purposes. The fiberglass itself, which gives the r value to the space into which it is installed, and the paper, which is actually two layers of paper with a layer of tar or plastic cement sandwiched in between, which acts as a vapor barrier. In calculating heat gain/heat loss BTU requirements for structures, the vapor barrier, if it is present and CONTINUOUS accounts for 15% of preventing your gain or loss. In a typical residence, this can be quite significant when figuring the long-range cost of heating and cooling your home. For this reason, the National Environmental Systems Contractors Association has for decades recommended a SOLID, CONTINUOUS vapor barrier on the interior side of all walls and ceilings. Proper insulation installations is a MUST under this circumstance to prevent mold/mildew situations. Now back to the flange. The flange is the continuation of the vapor barrier across the face of the structural surface (stud or ceiling joist/rafter). The surface area of an 8' 2X4 stud is roughly one square foot. So you can see that when looking at an entire house, this can add up fast, and create the need for the next size furnace and air conditioner. That is why NESCA advises applying the flange to the surface of the stud/ceiling joist, not the side. This stops infiltration of outside air, and continues the surface area of the vapor barrier. And yes, I know drywall hangers don't like it, but my future energy bills are more important to me than the convenience of the drywall hangers. All due respect, of course. Sorry, didn't mean to write a novel. The cabin is looking great, welcoming, and comfortable.

This is actually very good information. Even in a dry climate, installing a continuous vapor barrier on the inside of the roof insulation will prevent mold and mildew caused by humid indoor air from condensing on the bottom side of the roof decking, which can cause MAJOR problems. Ask me how I know.

This is way more important in a home but a cabin that stays empty most of the time will have plenty of opportunity to dry. It’ll be fine.

Good stuff! That’s what I meant to say! Yeah the vapor barrier is one facet I’ll touch on in the wall insulation video (yay!). I’m confident the ‘vapor barriers’ in place now will suffice. I definitely believe it’s an overall better R value with the flanges on the face, too. I appreciate you watching and commenting!

Great question. I would have to say about 50 % of the time I will skim through the details and if products are listed I will check them if I have a need for them. Sometimes I might just check to see if they are maybe better than something I already own. Hope that helps? Also interesting how you mention about the chimney effect of the insulation, I was not aware of that. So another great video, good job. I must of got a little too close when your were cutting those short pieces think I got some insulation in my eye, So I have to go clean up before getting on to your next project. Be back shortly.

I watch every video. Sometimes, twice if I have a brain dead moment. My dad's favorite power tool was the router. I never did buy one because they cost more than a over sized drill bit. I didn't make fancy furniture either. It's amazing what you can build out of sawhorse braces. Sawhorse chairs and sawhorse plant hangers. Sawhorse drying racks for decorative molding. Sawhorse picnic tables. Anyway, I love the show. Take care. Vaughn

I also watch most KZbin videos from start to finish, pay taxes willingly as part of the greater good, and read instructions before using new tools. I'm just not normal. I always enjoy watching your videos. Most of the time I learn something which is a bonus! I personally would have stapled the flange to the face of the rafters to make a continuous vapour barrier, but like you said, it's just a cabin and will not always be heated. One of my reasons would be that I don't want to create "runways" for rodents and bugs to explore. As for the question, I probably only read about 50% of the video descriptions. Sometimes I read but more likely than not, I would say I just follow along. You have one of the more entertaining channels but for the life of me....I can not understand why anyone would live in the north. Keep in mind I am living in Florida, was 70 degrees today. A few things I would do different like dormers so more of the loft areas is usable. It is not mine and I have no idea of the intended purpose. Thanks for the entertainment. Be careful and stay safe.

You are too kind! To answer your question: mountains. I’m drawn to almost everything about them. I’ll take the cold if it means views, wildlife, and peace! Thank you. 🙏

Patrick, I am really enjoying this series. But watching you today has made up my mind. If (when?) I build my own little cabin, I am DEFINITELY getting some scaffolding. Yes, it costs money. But I figure I can sell it afterward and make back at least half of what I spend. I'm quickly sliding into my late 50's, and not really the athletic sort. So there is no way in tarnation I'm gonna be climbing around in the rafters like you did in this video. 😂😂😂 As for reading the text of the description, I normally only do it if there is something mentioned in the video that makes me want to look there (such as links or references and the like).

If the ground was just a tad more level or even, I may have gone that route. Much safer for sure. I am very careful when I monkey around…for the record! Thank you for watching. 🙏

I don't care what anyone says, putting in insulation is my favorite video to watch. Well, next to watching paint drying videos. Let me know when that episode comes up. Just kidding. Ah, the demands of a KZbin channel. I must ask, though, given the name of your channel...where are the moose?

They are elusive! Usually see 1 or 2 a year in this area. I’d love to get one on video. Stay tuned for my paint drying series coming up! 🤣

Hi. Nothing is worse than insulation. I used Rockwool on the cabin I am building. It is still itchy. I read description when I am interested in a product you are using, especially something new or different for me. Insulation probably not, solar I definitely would as an example. Stay warm!

I hear you on insulation not being your cup of tea! I was almost looking forward to ads! 😂 Don’t worry I’ll be back next week! Friday night is a glass of wine and your videos! It’s now a ritual. I rarely read the video description, but since posting links to tools and what not will help you, I’ll have a look at it from now on. By the way your channel is the only one I watch the full ads, unless it’s three minutes long. 😅 But you get it!
