How I Build a Beautiful Cedar Ladder for an Off Grid Cabin Loft

Wait until you see this!
If I told you to build me a ladder, that ladder could be made from virtually any material and with an endless amount of design possibilities. In this episode, I choose semi-clear Western Red Cedar for both the rungs (in this case treads or steps) and the side rails. These are just off-the-rack 2x4's and 2x6's.
The results are worth the wait! With a little tung oil to finish it off, the ladder turns out to be more like fine furniture. It's stunning! In my humble opinion.
In this video, I go through every step of my ladder-building process, from cutting cleats to measuring the safest angle of a ladder. Hopefully there's one tidbit or two that you'll take away from watching. Let me know what that is! I'm always curious to know what you, the viewer, are thinking.
This ladder will be secured to the loft face with a notch-pipe system. Check it out! The fascia board for the loft is made from original wall boards from a home built in 1911. It all works well together, as I'm confident you'll agree.
Thank you very much for watching ‪@LifeontheMoose‬ !!

Such a clever way to do a loft ladder, you can store it out of the way so easily. Or pull it up into the loft with you when sleeping to prevent bears from climbing it.

Last thing I built was a storage space staircase and I essentially did it this way. Instead of cutting the stringers I had stair hangers and strong ties for under each side of the tread and two 8" head loc screws on each end of the tread through the stringers. I went way past 300lbs per step. Island folk were going to use that set of stairs.

Good point! I wouldn’t want to rely on those. I’m confident that with the glue and with the huge screws in each step, there will never be much weight, and it’ll all be good for a long time.

Great Q! I’m going to add a couple to the log posts above.

I like very much your videos and your way of life. I'm waiting for retirement (21 months left, I'm 60) to do the same, build a cabin in the woods and leave the "caos" of everyday life (and my wife 😀) behind for some months a year. I like very much where you live, too. It looks like my property here on the Alps, at 5,300 feet, North Italy, except for the trees (here I have a lot of trees, with less open spaces, and above it just bare rock). We have very few bears, fortunately, but they attack men sometimes, and last year they killed an hiker😞, and a lot of wolves, but they don't attack men (till now, at least). But there is a thing I really don't like, and as a carpenter with more than 40 years of passion behind, each time I see it I'm scared: you always work on unstable surfaces, even with the circular saw. In our job (or hobby, it's the same) a good, sturdy, flat and stable working surface is a must, not an option or a luxury, not only in the shop, but even and especially on site. Trust me, with just three or four fingers left it's really difficult to work 😀 Please, please, please, buy a pair of GOOD sawhorses, like the Taughbuilt or the DeWalt, place them on a flat , even surface, put two 2"x4" and a sheet of 1" plywood on them and fix it with a couple of screws. And buy a good jawhorse, it's a priceless friend when you are by yourself. It's better to waste 5 minutes preparing a good workspace, than lose a month for an injury!!! And it's not only a matter of safety. With a clean, sturdy workplace you gain precision, confidence and speed!!! Please, take this words as a friendly advice from an old pal, not as a disapproval! Take care, and thanks for your ideas, I'm making treasure of them for the "third part of my life" 😛

Thank you. I appreciate your words of caution! I can’t argue any of them. All I can say is, I may be a bit safer than it appears on video…sometimes. Best of luck with your build, let me know how it goes! 🙏

Wondering if you considered a laperye stair?

I admit, I had to look that up to remind me what it was! Good Q. I’ll add hand grips to the posts above, other than that, not really. Thanks for watching!

Would a metal plate of some kind placed on the top outside of the ladder's hook area make it safer and stronger? Use your pattern and cut out two pieces to mirror the hook part and attach them on the outside.

No doubt that would be stronger. I pondered it, just for a second! It would also be heavier, more expensive, and time-consuming, since I don’t have the metal supplies and tools. I appreciate you watching!

I know you get too many comments to respond to each one at this point, but I’d be curious to know if the water conservation you mentioned is a precaution, or out of necessity. Do you actually run out at times?
@LifeontheMoose

We have never. The “fear” of doing so just makes me cautious. Thanks for asking! As long as I am able, I’ll respond.

are you attaching those cleats with drywall screws?
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose 6 ай бұрын
I am. Given the rungs are independently supported, I feel good about just using what I had on hand to tighten and glue that cleat to the rail.
