Funny to me that they were looking for a substitute for turkey on Christmas as I've never had turkey on Christmas (I'm an American.) We have some kind of beef roast usually, (typically tenderloin) as a main dish. Some years we have roast duck. To me turkey is for Thanksgiving.

This video covered a lot of good points regarding Christmas. As for New Years, no mention of Bonenkai or Shinenkai. No mention of “Western” style New Years parties which seem to become popular recently. Lastly, no mention of what do young people or couples do during the end of year. I’m old and married in Japan so I’m curious about these questions. :)

Yes, there are so many topics we missed out on! Most of the questions we received were about Christmas, so I had to tack on my own Questions about New Year's in Japan. Maybe one year I'll do a proper video about all the events surrounding New Year's. Not this year though, haha.
@Yahriel5 жыл бұрын
@@LifeWhereImFrom I'd be interested in hearing more about New Year's in a future video - especially since it sounds like it's a much larger, more important celebration than Christmas is.

I'd love to know about Japan and social media in general. Japan's attitude towards it, is it tame compared to other countries, do teens get too absorbed with it etc....

Lacey Cross It can get pretty bad here. “Insta-bi” folks are frowned upon due to their ordering expensive meals and not even take a bite before leaving the restaurant for the next photo op. Facebook is not popular but it’s mostly used by Japanese teens who want to attract foreigners and Mothers who take pictures of their children (You almost never see the mother in the pictures). Line is the primary app for texting and video messaging. You almost never ask anyone for their phone number, you ask for their Line.

But is sayonara not saying a big good bye to not see back in long time? I though, mata-ne or byebye is the short time bye, to see in the next few days or so? One though popped up in my mind while making my breakfast a few minutes ago: Is the change of the Tenno in this April 2019 a big thing in Japan and how do the common japanese handle with it? I know, it will be the end of a Era ( end of Hesei, if I know it correct? ) and with the new Tenno it will begin a new era. Do the Japanese celebrate it big or more silent/more private ? It not too much time till the change of the Era, the retreat of the tenno. Kinds regards from Germany, Peter! Mata-ne!

I'm still confused. It's not a holiday. They don't celebrate it. The kids go to school. But they have a national ad on TV for KFC. They have Christmas cakes. And some people put up Christmas trees. Dating couples give each other gifts. It seems like they are in some denial about celebrating it. They don't want to but they do, a little bit.

As they explained, it started with Christian missionaries in the 70s. They were looking for turkey, but turkey isn't in Japan. So, they bought a lot of chicken from KFC. Given Japanese incorporate some Western influences, a KFC Christmas dinner is now common, but it's not a holiday. Just something most participate.
