Last Friday was a "control day," the day of the week when the Olympic Weightlifting athletes go heavy. The prize: $500 in cash. The challenge: make all 10 attempts at 90% of your competition weight, 5 snatches and 5 clean & jerks, with no misses. Rob Blackwell, Donny Shankle, and Jon North each took home $166. Lindsay Taylor, Spencer Moorman and Tom Sroka each missed only 1 snatch to finish 9 for 10.

@marshalljman What is a pre-arm bend? I have a 79" reach at 6' tall and what I do is that I widen my grip once I have cleaned the bar so that my elbows and wrists are perpendicular to the bar more or less. Then just drop under with a wide split.

When they do block work, the bar sometimes bounces off the blocks and straight into the wall when they miss behind.

Can anyone explain to me how to accomplish the pre-arm bend that Spencer and Rob do? I have really long arms proportional to my body and I feel like that technique would improve my clean(although the long arms proved good for throwing a baseball, not so much for lifting). Thanks.

@PowerSprinter For men, 6 Chinese lifters currently hold world records across 4 weight classes (62, 69, 77, 85). None hold records in the 94, 105, or 105+ classes. It's no surprise that those 6 guys are ripped (although, as an 85, Zhang Yong was a little softer than the other 5 guys - not fat by any means, just not rock-hard like the others), since they are in the light-to-middle-weight classes: everyone in those classes is ripped, regardless of where they're from.

@PowerSprinter Hey. I think that only the genetically elite can stay at 8% bf and still train hard all year round for weightlifting. Consider that most professional weightlifters do 10+ sessions a week and this takes a huge toll on their body. In turn, they have to take in a high amount of calories just to recover for their next training. Most of these weightlifters also stay 3-5kg above their weight category, simply because they are more able to withstand the heavy training at that weight.

@Postermaestro 9 жыл бұрын
Rob bends his arms a lot in the clean. It looks like he brings the bar all the way up to his waist before hitting it. Wouldn't you lose some power due to the arms not being able to support the force as you accelerate the bar during the hip extension? *It looks like all the male lifters except John is hitting the bar as high as in the snatch, with the help of bend arms. Is this really efficient?
@justincedeno3971
@justincedeno3971 9 жыл бұрын
Postermaestro Rob uses the hip clean technique, which involves that rowing that weight into the hips once you get above the knees, which is why his arms are so bent.It provides alot of force through the bar but its not for everyone just certain body types

Don't worry about the over head stuff, that comes with time and reps. As far as getting into the sport, look into getting some weightlifting shoes from Adidas. The shoes make a huge difference in overhead stuff like jerks or snatches. I am not sure what area you are in, but if there is an Olympic weightlifting gym in your area, then check it out. Whatever you do, do NOT go to a crossfit gym.

@PowerSprinter Since they stay at 12% or so when they train, when it is time to cut weight, if they try to diet down like a bodybuilder, they will very likely lose strength (ask anyone who has tried dieting down the fat for a bodybuilding comp and kept his strength) than if they only cut water weight and stayed at the same bf %. A 94kg or 105kg lifter who is ripped to shreds and tearing up international competitors simultaneously is really gifted, with or without steroids.
