For people unaware.... This was always a signed deal! Lightlark was initially sold as a TWO BOOK contract, but seems to be setting itself up as a series, probably a trilogy. The contract was for her to write and publish two books however, and unless it had severely crashed and burned, the publisher was very unlikely to cancel that contract. However, if we all band together and make sure no one buys this sequel, maybe they won't publish a third book. We still have time, maybe. Probably not, but we can try. Happy international hate on lightlark day.

it being a two-book contract honestly makes sense because initially while I understood a publisher would want to write a sequel - you know, da money - I couldn't imagine putting yourself back out there with a sequel after that kind of reaction unless you too were blindly in it for money at the cost of further destroying your reputation as an author but yeah I'd probably just finish the contract too. or maybe I'm just underestimating how badly this series is just for money rather than out of love for the craft

Not looking forward to this sequel (not bc im planning on reading it, just that I'll see the it all over social media like the 1st book) but I AM looking forward to the sequel to your original video (godspeed friend!) My general thoughts: -Wow what a vague, generic description. -yeah the cover is awful, I didn't even register the bottom thing as a skull. The crown is COMICALLY oversized compared to it. My partner works in graphic design and sometimes I show him bad YA book covers for fun. I think he'd have a conniption over this one -judging by the fact that all of Aster's instagram reels revolve around her aggressively bragging about her success (I don't even seek them out, they just haunt my For You page...and there are so many), I'm fairly certain the negative critiques haven't really gotten through in a way that will result in improvements. I think she's still just riding the high of her own success. And honestly I don't think her publishers care about what's inside the book as long as the hypes there. I'm fairly certain we're gonna be seeing a trilogy -uh anyway yeah can't wait for A Court Of Mist and - no shit I mean, From Blood and- no wait fuck...I mean...Nightbane...nailed it

Anyway this is such a mess I hope Aster takes a break from published works after this (she should have the money to do so) and works on her craft. I know you made the point to say that you're pronouncing it right but... it isn't Eye-lah, according to the book itself though, it's eyes-lah (Audiobook), or ees-lah. Because she remarks that Grim "pronounced it perfectly, like a snake's hiss, with all the letters sounded out." -Paragraph 2, Page 9. I had to check out how bad it was, and adhd makes it hard to read actual text sometimes, so... audiobook made sense. I couldn't make it out of chapter 4, because hearing eyes-lah over and over made me want to hit my head against the wall. The narrator's pronunciation doesn't even make sense when you think about that explanation, because a snake's hiss is obviously a soft s sound, but the narrator uses a hard s. So who the hell knows? As someone who is actually a fan of Throne of Glass (I know, I know, I swear I like good books too), there are so many scenes from Lightlark that are direct copies from that series. And this whole “Isla going to nightclubs” thing is clearly reminiscent of the beginning of Book 3 of ToG, where Celaena goes to a bunch of bars. Except the difference is that it’s not presented as glamorous - she is depressed and lost and at a really low point, and this is a sign of that. Something tells me that Nightbane will just be about how sexy Isla is. Sorry for the rant, but while SJM might not be the best author, at least she understands character. Aster… well, we’ve all see the first video.

An interpretation of the Lightlark 2 description, compiled into a overly long comment based on overused romance tropes i remember vaguely were in the Court of Thorn and Roses books as well a certain Warrior Cats love triangle that cemented into my head as a kid. Ahem. We start to learn about Grimm... except, we really don't. The book will shift attention on to Grimm, but it only highlights the secrets he refuses to share with Isla because he's equal parts proud, stubborn and worried about her. Isla will become upset by this, because how could Grimm keep secrets from /her/, he should trust her with anything -- and so the two will become estranged and short with one another (of course with ~sexual tension~ and ~frustration~ thick in the air, blech.) Meanwhile, Oro will show up maybe, and demonstrate that he's a softer, sensitive guy who's honest with his feelings, and Isla will spend more time with him. Grimm will be ~jealous~ and snide towards Oro and Isla because of it. This results in a confrontation where he and Isla get into a big fight before one of them says something nasty to hurt the other, and they part ways feeling like something had permanently shifted between them. More shenanigans will ensue, before Isla and Grimm finally have to work together to face the ill that Grimm's been keeping quiet on, and it's because of Isla's mystetious true nature that she's able to save the day all on her own, proving to everyone that she is both independent and badass as well as someone whom badass no. 2, Grimm, can rely on. They reconcil, and poor Oro gets let down "gently" as if the narrative ever did anything more than lead the poor man on. Next booook.... random bs! Yayyy.......

The way Lightlark could've instead been a polished stand-alone and generated hype for her next book/ series... And I've never read the book but for some reason, I really didn't think the curse issue would be resolved in the first book. What the hell will the second book be about????

I read Larklight and loved it, so when I initially saw the thumbnail for the Lightlark video, I was _very_ confused, and then miffed that such a waste of paper had a name so similar to an actually good book.

It's funny you mentioned Larklight, when I first heard this discourse about lightlark it did confuse me why people were getting annoyed about a book from 2006.

I have been so mentally checked out due to my chronic health issues, but man, you make me laugh, Crow! Thanks for that 💜 I’m actually working on my first book finally after so long bc I started watching book related stuff again after your lightlark video. If she can do it, I definitely can 😅 That plot summary had me crying laughing. It’s probably the worst ploy summary I’ve ever seen, it says so much nothing, it’s almost impressive! Looking forward to hearing your visceral takedown of “Nightbane” (resisting calling it the bane of my existence, bc I feel like it might be yours 😂). Love the hair btw!

I wonder if "hate read" is a big enough market for this kind of book that the author is incentivized to NOT improve for book 2.

I think this book will be a bestseller again, judging by it being B&N #1 preordered or something? She has a large underage audience that has never read a good book before, so they’ll keep buying her shit until they (hopefully) grow out of it in their mid-twenties. As for improvement in her writing: I HIGHLY doubt it. I check her TikTok sometimes for shits and giggles: she NEVER talks about prose, characters, or story. She does not care about writing in the slightest, ONLY about her fame. Every video is her talking about how famous she is, she frequently reuploads the same videos about how famous she is, and if it's not a reupload, it's a blatant rehashing of another previous upload. It’s kinda... sad. I’m surprised she has so many followers because I would go crazy if someone I followed just uploaded the exact same video 20 times 😂😅

when you showed the cover and started talking about the skull i genuinely was like "what skull?". it took me like two minutes of staring at the video, paused, to see it. its... not good. and i'll admit i quite enjoy the first one's cover. if i saw it on a shelf in a bookstore/library, i'd pick it up for a closer look. it's not as polished as it could be but, at least to me, it's not bad. the second one though. it's distractingly... unbalanced? it's the first one but with a seemingly haphazard redressing. like when you make something based on specific measurements and it doesn't come out exactly the same but good enough, and when you have to make another one you take measurements from the thing you made instead of the original specifications. a traced drawing of a traced drawing, if that even makes sense. i get that this is a series and the covers are suppoused to reflect that, that's the whole point, i just think something got lost along the way and nightbane's cover isn't the best it could be (same for lightlark, but at least looking at that one is kind of pleasant if it's not for long).

specific example: either take out the smoke or the swirls. you don't need both. the colors and title and main image are enough to distinguish it from lightlark, you dont need another element
