Dude over 250,000 MPH?!?! And 1 BILLION bolts?? I never realized. Thank you Weather Channel! I'm learning for my school!
@DB-475 жыл бұрын
They are very fast so 250.000 mph or ~ 400.000 km/h is possible as seen on super slow motion captures of lightning, where branching or lightning is well noticeable. For my surprise I found out that common negative to ground lightning (CG-) can reach current up to 30 - 120 kA and positive ones (CG+) up to 400 kA and can reach up to 40 - 60 km (25 - 38 mi) out of cloud. They are also super loud like bomb explosion or rolling heavy stones, last time when it stroke 600 - 700 metres (0.4 mile) far, it was quite loud :D

Once when I was younger, my mom and I were sitting in the garage watching a storm, with the garage door open. A lightning bolt struck the driveway directly infront of me, I still remember seeing nothing but light and almost going deaf from how loud the thunder was, and uncontrollably jumping back like 4 feet before crashing onto the ground.

Lightning struck our house in Houston once. The entire house lit up like God's flashlight was just chilling on the couch eating chips and dip, and every appliance turned off and the master breaker popped. Had to reboot the computer and screamed when I saw a lamp's light fill my field of view five minutes later. XD I was going blind at the time.

There are some stormy days where the air itself feels electric, a dreadful tingle across the skin and hair. It's on these days I just stay indoors. Once as a kid, my hair was starting to raise up to the sky and my mom forced us all back inside. South Florida is not the place for a lightning magnet like me to be but here I am.

A friend of mine got electrocuted in her home, when she was vacuuming with one of those old, really loud metal Hoover vacuums. She had no idea there was a thunderstorm outside because she couldn't hear it over the vacuum, and when her house was struck, the lightening traveled through the walls, into the vacuum and into her. She survived, but was pretty burned.

I'll never forget the first time I saw a tree get hit by lightning, we were at least 50 yds away in my truck and wood was bashed against it, the tree was burning and we just looked at each other like WTH??? I've had two experiences with lightning and I don't want anymore, I was lucky both times, they were indirect, still unpleasant.

Not only deafening... but you could feel the impact and electrical charge at that distance, i was in physical and mental shock, thought i was directly struck at first and had to mentally "restart" realising i was fine and then taking cover.
