I know nothing about ice covered ponds, coming from a warm climate. I was hoping this video would give me a general idea of what safe-to-walk-on ice either looked like or what parts of a pond were more likely to be more solid (edges? Center? Small areas? Wide open arenas?)
@epleeple2412 жыл бұрын
Black ice can support from 5cm, but ice thickness will vary. 10cm is reccomended for big group, thus you have some margin as well (some might say 8cm, some 9, some 7, depends on how willing you are to risk falling through, and what safety measures you do). Ice will vary over the lake, but where water flows it is always thinner (inlets, outlets, thinner parts where water moves faster). On big lakes the more shallow parts on the edges will freeze first, but as the whole lake freezes, thickness will level out. Layered ice with different types of ice makes everything more complicated, but black ice (see-through clear) is the strongest, and easiest to calculate whether it will support a person/a group/snowmobile/car/tractor/truck. Sea ice is also more complicated than lakes. If you want it simple, find a lake with minimal inlets and outlets, and skate on it when 10+cm black ice. Bring rope, ice spikes (or knife or something) and extra wool skift for safety.

What if we could go back in time to view historical events as they happened and to see and go wherever we wanted within those events, but also brought along the gray circle with us so that we don’t impact history and it doesn’t impact us and no one in the past can see us? That’d be cool. 😎
