Unlike creation, God is self-existent, uncaused, and independent. In this lecture, Dr. Sproul will examine the doctrine of God’s aseity, and explain why it is vital to a proper understanding of who God is as Creator and Redeemer.
This message is from our 2004 National Conference, A Portrait of God: • A Portrait of God: 200...

@@judithmiguda1791 That's a topic I really want to study: the state of existence of those who've died in Christ. Two things cause me to think they may have some degree of consciousness. First is Jesus' parable of the rich man and Lazarus where both were conscious. The second is the fact that Moses who died (God buried him on the mountain) appeared at Jesus' transfiguration. But Paul speaks of those who have "fallen asleep in the Lord". IDK, but it would be interesting to probe it some more.

@@PandaCheeksYour ignorance and misplaced confidence in bilical acuity along with your failed attempt of correction is appalling but typical of the American "Christian." First off I don't believe in the concept of youth pastors since it's not biblical. Second, in regards to me reading my Bible I think I'm good there since I was a pastor for many years and teach biblical theology and apologetics. My advice to you is the same. Go take a class in biblical hermeneutics before you attempt to correct someone and shame yourself. Anyone can quote scripture out of context which is exactly what most uneducated Christians do. 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, RIGHTLY dividing the word of truth.

@Jeff Carlin that you are ignorant it's obvious but your arrogance is mesmerising. I guess that thousands of historians from thousands of years of history we're expecting your coming so that you can teach them what they see in order to write the absolute true that apparently you have! The wise one I might add.... Ask Josephus the Historian who was an eye witness! Ask every book of history you can get your hands on and read what it says not what you think. History doesn't care about your belief! Jesus's life, death and resurrection was the most documented events in the whole history but I guess, that's true only for some billions of persons who actually read, not for you that posses the all knowledge. Some people think they can think when they actually can't

Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones writings/sermons...James Boice and Iain Murray (of Edinburgh)...and I have for some decades had these men as my instructors and I thought way back, 45 years ago, up to now...that they, also the great Puritan preachers & theologians...are men of God who have taken the bible and so much of the great doctrines and serious things in scriptures and made it so incredibly easy for some of less mind and brain (as me.) We must thank God for these men, pray such writings and words will go far and wide across the world to the church.

Adrian S The Bible does not condone murder, rape, incest lol you should probably open the Bible and take a look for yourself. Leviticus 18:6-17 clearly says incest is not permitted. As for murder, um check the 10 commandments. And the supposed inaccuracies are due to verses taken out of context, if you look at scripture, you’ll come to understand the contradictions you think exist, do not actually but is because a low understanding of scripture.

@@wally1452 No, you most certainly won't be seeing him again (other than on your screen). There is not one iota of proof that you will see anyone who has died. None. Zero. Zip. Nada. It's a nice, comforting thought, but it has no basis in reality. Common sense dictates that you should live your life as if it's the only one you have. Be good to those around you while they're still alive. Do you remember anyone or anything from before your birth? No, because you were dead. Then why would you think that when you're dead (again) you will somehow continue to live on; let alone live on, with people you once knew, in a magical place where the laws of nature don't apply? That kind ignorance only gives people an excuse to not cherish their lives (or those around them) to the fullest extent. It also robs certain individuals of developing the necessary skills to cope with grief in a healthy and realistic way; potentially creating additional pain and trauma should those individuals ever release themselves from the shackles of religion.

I am really enjoying these sermons by R.C. Sproul. It's like John MacArthur will preach to you all the basics of Christianity so that you know all the foundations of our faith, whereas R.C. will take you into Ph.D. territory and expound on them.

You know nothing of GOD and BIBLE and THEOLOGY If you have any idea, you won't dare to think to make a comparison between these two giants of Service for GOD CHRIST You r just enjoying philosophical approach on a Biblical truth what RC does Whereas John MacArthur' approved is absolutely solely Theological You r more interested in listening and enjoying Greek philosophy and speculation rather BIBLE, the HOLYBGOD's HOLY SCRIPTURES what JMA only grounded and rooted in

@@shallowbubble931 yeah, i think you went a LOT farther than what Paul was trying to express. I agree that MacArthur and Sproul are (was) titans on the same level. I am grateful for both men's capability of bringing the deep truths of God to light in such a way that the more simple-minded can more readily understand them. But as Dr. Sproul once pointed out, how can we avoid vain philosophies if we don't first know what they look like? No, Dr. Sproul took the things of God and applied them in the area of philosophy to reveal that God is over all of life, and not only religion. The only way anything, anything at all, makes sense is if God IS. Similarly, we are to take the things of Scripture and apply them to all of life, social, economic, legal, aesthetic, medical, etc. etc. - because God is God over everything.

Well said dear R.C. You are Home 💕 but your teachings remain. I was listening to a debate years ago where the Creationist asked the Evolutionist how nothing could explode and make everything. The evy thought for a moment then said "Because the nothing was unstable." I thought I was going to fall off my chair in hysterics. It was a priceless moment when God took the wisdom of man and turned it into absolute foolishness.

I am thrilled to now have a better insight into that one phrase from Apostle Paul's discourse at the acropolis in Athens: "In Him we live and move and have our being." And I love Dr. Sproul's methods of presentation, which always appeal to both the heart and the intellect, while dispelling fallacious ideologies. I feel so behind, like I have to catch up, as the bulk of my self-education has been from great men of the past. Before 2016, I didn't even know who R.C. Sproul was, and I've studied theology for 30 years. I am so thankful he has left such an enormous amount of teaching behind for us. I have just recently (2015) gotten to present day great teaching Saints, and yet, as they cite the greats theologians of yesteryear whom they have studied, I sometimes hear a name or book that's new to me, and then it's back again to study those publications. So many books, so little time... My first 30 years was almost studying the bible only. I'm 59.

When Jesus was asked about prayer he said to go to a private place to pray, not in some public place to make a show of your prayers. He further said that people that make a show out of prayer have already received their reward ( the admiration of others). Whenever I see these showboaters, so emotional just dripping with the spirit, or so they want you to believe, I think of Christ's message and what we should pray for, our daily bread, to see our own faults instead of the faults of others. Most of us don't need to pray for food but we do have the power to answer the prayers of those who are praying for food, for shelter, to be cured of alcoholism and drug addiction perhaps we should get out of the asking prayers and get into the business of answering them. Just a thought.

This is, to my mind, the most convincing argument for God...the argument from contingency, essentially. Before I ever saw this sermon or knew much of academic philosophy, this was the issue that the Living God used to reach me. As I began researching, I found that others had already perceived the mystery and elucidated it beautifully. I wish more skeptics and atheists would give it a viewing. I'd be interested to see what the Aron Ra crowd or Dawkins crowd contrives in response.

It's a very hard argument to understand, at first. It is based on such simplicity, many minds will step right over it and not see it. Once it begins to sink in, it truly is the best argument. Still, very hard for many to grasp. If one is not inclined to believe in God already, this is not likely to persuade them but for one who is inclined to believe in God, this can be the clincher.

@@dartog4967 - I'm not interested in convincing someone who is inclined to my views. If I did so, what have I accomplished? If I argue well, perhaps I can convince someone who is _not_ inclined to my views. Then I can say something difficult and valuable was accomplished. I believe in Heaven and Hell. If by my words, another soul finds his/her way to Heaven, then something of eternal value has been gained. Only things having eternal value really have any value at all. Even Plato agrees. There is only one thing we take with us when we die - our soul. New bodies are provided. This body doesn't really matter. Homes have been built for us. Property here on this Earth is temporary and therefore worthless. All of our needs are met - water from the fountain of living water, food from the tree of life, friends, neighbors, safety. My desire to reach souls is sincere. There is truly nothing of value on this Earth except men's souls.
