Guilt and Forgiveness: Pleasing God with R.C. Sproul

The central message in Scripture is one of forgiveness. The believer in Jesus Christ can have real assurance that the guilt from sin is no more, and that forgiveness has been freely granted. Jesus says that He who the Son sets free is free indeed. So how is it that many believers do not “feel” free? Dr. Sproul considers this question as he helps us deal with the issue of “Guilt and Forgiveness.”
This is the 6th in a series of messages by Dr. Sproul on pleasing God. See other videos in the series: • Pleasing God - R.C. Sp...

I'm always impressed by the fact that older sermons sound like they could be preached today. They're just as relevant since our condition never changes. Just as the Bible is as applicable today is when it was written. A testament to God's word and our common traits that transcend the generations.

Thank you! I love your message that guilt is to be embraced. We eat chocolate proudly at our church so it is perfectly normal for our kids to not be let’s say athletic. I would not be ashamed of fatness as it is part of being a good Christian to tolerate guilt, and those that are not guilty might not be forgiven and thus might not reach heaven. I myself often have guilty feelings of not enough faith in God but I use this guilt to ask for forgiveness so I can be saved. I don’t think we should try to overcome our guilt but recognise it as part of being a Christian, even if it is difficult to live with. Even if we feel worse with this guilt, it I better to have it and know that we are true Christians. It brings us down, but it brings us together. Together, and down. Only then we can be saved. Being fat, well I’m bot fat to myself but if you choose to identify 558 pounds as fat, then that is your choice, but being like this does make me feel guilt but from my faith I think guilt is not an unholy feeling even if it means pain. It is like turning your cheek when struck as we are taught and deeply a part of our faith of tolerance our sadness and sickliness - including being large. Faith also why I love America 🇺🇸 and we are unique here, we have a responsibility to change the world, and lucky to be an exception in the world - thus we can spread faith to others to help them to tolerate guilt of sin, guilt of leaning away, and guilt of eating chocolate. This brings Christians together and Jesus accepts you too, so if you feel guilty for chocolate, or guilt ou about anything, think about your faith firstly rather than trying to solve the problem. Under god we accept, we give in to our weakness, we don’t try to change our weaknesses.

Our feeling of moving away from God is ironically what brings us closer to God. Feeling guilty it’s what makes us Christian. My non-Christian friends just don’t have this guilt but I’m afraid to separate from God to not reach heaven so I have no choice but to feel this guilt. I am sure that feeling guilt is really an important part of being a real Christian.

I love Dr. Sproul and his Gift of wonderful comprehension of God's Word in his teachings. It is very good to hear again his voice to re-learn God's Word, God has blessed us with this very humble and great man of God, RC. Just notice that in this teaching there is something bit unclear as first. The lady getting married was indeed guilty of premarital sin together with her fiance and through ages, it is sin to God even to this day, though the world has become so liberated even in sexual activities. But then again RC pointed out that he visited the university Chaplain to consult about this matter, that they will soon to get married, and that the lady had repented (and must be her fiance as well, I suppose because they were Christians) but guilt still haunts the lady deeply. So this is why RC points out that God forgives sins and it is a reality at once, no matter what a person seems to feel. So now it is clear to me. :) God bless us all and may the Lord allow us to understand His Word always.

I used to feel guilty less often but since turning to Christ and church groups I have started to feel guilty more often. When driving away from Jesus I feel more confident but when returning to church, the guilt comes back. At church we bring it up sometimes and our group agreed that part of faith is to celebrate our guilt, because it keeps us clean and beneath Him. Encouraging guilt is be part of our Christian culture that we inherited. I would not be ashamed of guilt as it is part of being a good Christian, and those that are not guilty might not be forgiven and thus might not reach heaven. I myself often have guilty feelings of not enough faith in God but I use this guilt to ask for forgiveness so I can be saved. The Catholic Church is the longest-enduring institution in the world. Beginning with the first Christians and continuing in our present day, the Church has been planted in every nation on earth. The Catholic Church has Jesus Christ as her founder, and in spite of heresy from within and hostility from without, she remains in the twenty-first century the steadfast guardian of belief in his life, death, and resurrection. The teachings and redemptive works of Jesus as told in the Gospels are expressed by the Church in a coherent and consistent body of doctrine, the likes of which cannot be found in any other Christian body. The history of the Catholic Church is long, complicated, and fascinating. As in the parable of Christ about the weeds that were sown in a field of wheat, evil and good have grown together in the Church from the beginning some noble, some notorious--who have left an indelible mark on the Church, while never losing sight of the saints, who have given living testimony to the salvation power of Christ in every age.

25:42 That edit leaves out some critical info that hopefully Sproul spoke?! DANGER. I think this video should be revised, even thought the first 23:30 minutes are amazing. If left un-revised I feel that it endorses promiscuity. She (24:33) indirectly admits guilt, but the chaplain endorses it as if 'culturally acceptable'? (24:16 "Things have changed" - chaplain) She IS guilty of sinning. God NEVER changes. People and culture change like the wind, and therefore info/text or footage needs to be added to this video to keep new believers from error. IF the girl and her fiancé truly confessed their sin THEN they will quickly make whatever changes necessary to avoid falling into temptation and sinning again. Then yes, she would be OBJECTIVELY forgiven and the SUBJECTIVE feelings would fade as she reads the word (as Sproul illustrates in the end). TRUE repentance brings conviction that brings change. This process is called 'Sanctification of the believer'.

@@peterflaten1521 I love r c but I'm pretty sure God is NOT objective in regards to judgement. He does not show favoritism but scriptures do point out if you are doing something you think is wrong and still do it, it IS a sin for you. Knowledge holds people accountable, this is part of the reason teachers are held to more accountability. An example would be if I presented you with a plastic button and told you it was a launching device for a nuclear warhead. I know it's just a broken piece of plastic to some old computer equipment, but you don't know that and you believe it's real. If I push the button it's not a sin, but if you do it is.

He dreams about being improperly dressed before he speaks because we wear our clothes not only as a statement of who we are, but also as armor. A suit says, “I’m fit to lead!”, silencing some potential naysayers.

He was speaking just a few moments prior about speaking to non-believers. I feel that it’s fairly obvious, and I’m not trying to be rude, that he was circling back to that. ‘If there is a devil’, sort of like how frank Turek when he says ‘if it’s true would you believe’, then he finishes his point. RC Sproul was just a man and a sinful man as we all are. But I can promise you, if the Bible spike it RC seemed to believe it. He’s not questioning the reality of satan. He was using language.

Confusing because it is an error to believe that the Holy Spirit accuses and convicts a believer of their sins - unbelievers yes (“because they don’t believe in me”), believes no. Our own conscious accuses, convicts and condemns us. He convicts us believers of our righteousness (“because I go to my father“) in Christ. Jn. 16:8-15

Kambole Chituwo . Yes I’ve considered it and all I know is that it is distinct from the idea that the Holy Spirit convicts believers of sin -we sin every day and as Christians our conscious condemns us -we are sorry that we sin and we don’t want to sin -We need the Holy Spirit to convict us of righteousness in Christ through His finished work - without which we must dismiss the Hebrews 10 that says we can be made perfect in our conscience because of Jesus’s once and forever sacrifice that worked so we can have “no more consciousness of sins” versus the old sacrificial system that didn’t work where there is always “the reminder of sins”. I think the Lord tests and chastises us through circumstances.

Stop living in guilt and fear of death and hell. Please consider that Christianity is wrong. It doesn’t contain “truth”. It is mistaken, at best. Leave Christianity and leave your guilt, your frustration, and your worry. Love your life. Just live it. Don’t focus on sins manufactured from manufactured rules. Just live life as best you can, apart from the lies of Christianity. You can actually find happiness if you leave the constant guilt and fear of death behind.

I suggest that that religious word "sin," ought to be thrown into the archaic trash bin, and replaced with the non-religious word "behavior." Had we all been taught that we are born whole, rather than in "sin," the onus would be on us, as individuals, concerning how we treat each other. That word "sin," was meant to make us feel bad, not good, and it is not by chance, that preachers always point at others as being the sinners, and selves as being sin-free. You will see the lies ... but only when you are strong enough within your self, to be able to see.

As a Calvinist, don’t feel guilty. There is no freewill so God predetermined for you to sin for His mysterious will. He chose all sin to happen. Actually rejoice because both good and bad are the same in election because you had no choice.

I have to say I completely disagree with this. We do have free will. God does not make us sin or even tempt us to sin. Take responsibility for your actions. Though God has elected to save some and give justice to others we still have free will. God is sovereign, yet he does not make you sin.

@@chumbucket5109 We do have free will, but our freedom does not determine our afterlife, because if that so we can boast on our actions to determine the eternal life and that will imply that our free will is above God sovereignty. When Peter denied Jesus he refused this declaration and believe he has the power to avoid that therefore he believed that his free will was capable to stand loyal always to God. That is a proven fact that does not imply hiper calvinism but the word of God itself. There is proof on the Bible that God know already the sins of individuals on the future, relying primarily on free will is a sign that we have a profound issue with pride because we think that we are the writers of our story and the complete owners of our actions, but when we have the Holy Spirit in our lives we know that our life does not belong to us anymore, is now up to him and his will and we have to accept that will with a humble heart. Think about it, a rebellious heart always think that they have the power to determine, free will is real but we are now slaves of our Lord Jesus and ye bought us with his sacrifice on the cross.
