It's not the "they are good and misunderstood/we misjuged them/we can get along/we are not that different" -trope but demons are just monsters with no good intention. They are not really humanoid but just look that way to trick humans (same with the communication thing). I really, really appreciate that approach

In most flashback (if not all) Frieren and Himmel were always in the same frame to show us their relation and how they're kinda "meant" to be together. But in that last flashback with the demon, they disagree with one another, and to show that the anime seperates them. Either by them being far appart from eachother in a scene or just not sharing frames. I propably explained it kinda weirdly but hope I got the message across about how well writen this anime is.

It's become such a staple of our stories to humanize our monsters, make them less monstrous, that leaving simply as evil creatures is practically revolutionary and shocking. It's not done very often anymore that the Enemy is simply the Enemy. And I personally love how it shows the power of mere, simple words. One can destroy cities with physical weapons and magical spells, but now we see how the use of words, putting the right combination of them together, can be used to destroy cities as well.

Not really. Frieren is actually wrong about demons in a lot of ways. She's only correct in the sense that humans and demons are fundamentally incompatible. She hates them for legitimate reasons, but even she doesn't always follow her own logic about demons. She says there's no point in talking to them - okay, then why talk to Qual, Draht, Lugner, Aura, etc.? She knows they're more than "just monsters". But she hates them and has to remind herself constantly because the truth is that the demon's nature means they'll end up fighting anyway.

Most people have a weird reaction to the scene with the demon, thinking it was actually trying to comprehend empathy and therefore there is a way to have peace with them. Even if that was what the demon was doing, it’s best attempt at that was killing a man so it could use the orphaned child as a peace offering. That’s not peaceful at all. And of course, the truth of what the demon was doing was simply manipulation to stay in the village and keep feeding, trying to buy the trust of the couple that were most against its presence, it just misunderstood what a “daughter” is to a human, believing them to be replaceable with any female child.
@folcwinep.pywackett85172 ай бұрын
Demons in Frieren cannot even be said to be evil because they literally have no conception of morality at all. The Demon was thinking totally rational like a computer, means to ends, but completely missing that humans have moral outrage before they have reason.
@kagato232 ай бұрын
Yes and no. The demon wasn’t lying. I think it fully intended to live in the village in peace once all accounts were settled (got a new daughter for the person who hated her). And a demon isn’t stupid. It would understand that continuing to eat the village would not be considered peaceful. So it’d probably figured it could just eat travelers, and maybe sickly children that clearly weren’t going to be missed. Very peaceful.
@Syntex3662 ай бұрын
@@kagato23 it definitely did not. It was purely trying to trick people so it could feed without retaliation. Lugner’s comments immediately following that flashback were definitely written in there to really drive the point home. More than just being with her, Himmel's desire to remind her they weren't fairy tales was because she expressed sadness earlier at the thought that she was probably the only one who remembered Flamme's face. To the modern era, she might as well have not been real, leaving Frieren to carry the burden of her truth alone. Himmel didn't want her to feel like their party would end up the same way; a memory she alone holds and the only proof of her journey.
@eviltim378626 күн бұрын
See the thing I love what this episode presents us is that it’s not always “more interesting” to have the evil of a story just be misunderstood or ultimately had a reason to do evil or something like that. Instead it shows that you can write ultimate evil with just as much if not more depth than the very tired “I’m/were just misunderstood” tropes that people lean on these days. Here we are presented with an intelligent species that learned to manipulate its prey such as humans by essentially becoming something very similar in appearance and mannerisms. But is always after us in some way. I just love it, it presents a complex and dire threat to the series that goes beyond figuring out at some point that the devils had no choice or some dumb thing like that. It’s fine to write fictional factions that are just all bad sometimes remembering that none of this is real :P
@zam0232 ай бұрын
The issue here is that the general public does not remembers Freiren because the story of the heroes party is already more than 80 years old. Like the old man from that village. he was talking about the heroes party and it did not even occur to him that was Freiren.

“Errare humanum est.” There's a saying. Every human being makes mistakes. Himmel is human, too, and he felt empathy and sympathy for the demons' words and actions, but instead of listening to Frieren's advice, he made a poor judgment call that resulted in more casualties. The 'goodness' and 'compassion' that would have made him a 'true hero' was hindered here. But because of what he went through, Himmel, like Frieren, would have quickly come to the conclusion that 'demons can never coexist with humans', and would have been more mature.

I had an interesting observation watching this show. While obviously it's not one to one, there's some interesting patterns with the way the different races are portrayed and certain diagnoses. While we haven't seen many examples, elves seem to be what we would classify as neuro-divergent to some degree. Difficulty reading social ques, overly blunt, tend to get obsessive over some special interest to the near exclusion of nearly anything else, etc. Demons seem to have a lot of cluster b/dark tetrad traits. Lack of empathy, tendency to see others as means to an end, overly inflated sense of self-importance, despite being so long lived can be petty and impulsive without a lot of long term thinking (with a few exceptions), some seem to have sadistic tendencies, etc. It's interesting to me because I doubt the author intended the similarities, but probably based these races and characters off of people they observed in the real world. People who struggle to relate to others for elves, and humans we would call monstrous for demons.

You seemed to have noticed but it's worth pointing out, that the demons like Aura the Guillotine only resurfaced 28 years ago. Obviously that was also when Himmel the Hero died. This is not a coincidence. That means that the demons were so scared shitless of Himmel the Hero that they waited until he was full dead, before DAREING to come out of hiding. Even the threat of little old man Himmel was enough to keep the in check for 50 years. And keep in mind Hieter, Eisen, and Frieren were all still alive, up to even 10 years earlier, showing that even with Fieren's power, it was Himmel that the demons truly feared.

Fern said Aura regained her powers. Also, Freiren confirmed that they fought Aura and defeated her. She lost her powers due to battle wounds or sealing magic and survived I assume. 7:10-> Himmel THE GOAT
@Grabthars_Hammer2 ай бұрын
Himmel could not be a hero to a demon. He can be aspirational to everyone else he meets, and guide them to want to be better, but not them...And that makes him sad, which is why he's a Hero

They didn't listen to what Frieren said about the demons, because we tend to cling on prettey but faulty hopes than inconvenient truth.

Here’s a neat fact. Himmel in German means heaven. So they’re on a journey to find heaven, but for frieren it’s to find Himmel

As a German the German names are quite interesting and telling to me .... i can instantly rate what to expect from a character .... Lügner is the german word for liar 😉.

I totally agree 😂 The name-thing took some getting used to tbh. But when I watched it for the first time it made me laugh when he was introduced as 'Lügner'😂

@@kimchi-p31wwell, the good thing is that the German names are meant to be something relatively obvious about the character and aren’t spoilers.
@kimchi-p31w2 ай бұрын
@@andrewli6606yeah I know but it still makes some stuff obvious. And I just thought it was funny because to the characters in the show it's obviously just a name (and same for those viewers that don't understand German). But those who know German are instantly like: "that's suspicious...that's weird"😂

Why the German obsession in the anime though

I tried to translate Himmel from German to English, and the result is heaven, is that the correct result?

As a german, watching this, and having a character showing up literally called "Liar" it's a bit...😅 . But I do like the naming choices.

03:15 Watch that part again and pay close attention to Himmel's mouth.
