Which woman do you mean? Maria Josepha? And why was it too late?
@zehraveotesi82473 ай бұрын
@@furgerechtigkeit6207 Joseph's love of his life was Isabella of Parma. After her death, he never wanted to marry again. (He proposed to Isabella's sister, but I think it was his hopeless attempt to revive the woman he loved.) As for Maria Josepha, she loved Joseph as Isabella never did, but Joseph was too closed off to give her a chance. He only saw Josepha at the dinner table and in the bedroom, refused to treat her as a husband, and did not even go to Josepha's funeral when she died.

Josepha was the youngest daughter of late emperor Charles VII, apart from avoiding a Prussian-Bavarian alliance, Maria Theresa renowned the peace with Bavaria after doing it the first time when Francis Stephen became emperor, if Joseph and Josepha would have issue, the lines of Emperors Joseph I and Charles VI were combined and Bavarian reclamations to the imperial throne would be “absorbed” by Austria.

For Joseph, Josepha was less attractive and quite attractive, during his two years of marriage with her, he always compared his second wife with his late first wife Isabella and because of that, Joseph avoided Josepha’s presence as he could l. Maria Josepha was also a Habsburg by blood and marriage. Her father was from the House of Wittelsbach but was also a Habsburg by blood and marriage, her mother was also a Habsburg. Basically, her husband is also her second cousin. I don't know if this coincidental, I thought this stuff of marrying your cousins already stopped at the time of the Habsburg-Lorraine because the inbreeding of the Spanish Habsburgs.

@calliefinck6275 I never heard this story, though it kinda suits Francis to do this to Marie, he was a quite friendly father. But the betrothed part is not true, I am fairly certain, because according to all sources it seems pretty clear that he was going to the opera when he died, no daughters were with her, and no betrothed of the daughters were anywhere near. I don't know if Francis had any favorites among his children, but as far as I know he was closest to Maria Anna, who was intellectually the closest to him and shared several hobbies of his, especially the study of natural sciences. She was the most broken after his death too.
