Can you imagine how awkward a consummation must have been back then? Especially if you never met your intended until that night? Don’t get me wrong, I know that back then princes and princesses, King’s and Queens understood that they needed to make the marriage valid and start having heirs, but at the same time...it has to be at least a little bit awkward I love the little smile on Margaret’s face at 02:16-mark when Maximilian kicks them out.
@Lily1127channel4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it must have been very awkward. And unnatural. Sex is something that naturally, and biologically, happens when a male and female feel sexual attraction to each other and act on it. But this stupid social invention of mankind, that two people had to get into an arranged marriage and consummate it rightaway, without knowing each other a bit, no matter if at least one of them feels a tiny attraction or not, is just so stupid, and goes against the laws of nature.
@stoker1931jane4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes Court people & high ranking Church officials would even been IN 😮 the bedroom on the wedding night. Making even worse!! And "bloody" bed sheets had to be produced😓, to show & prove that the lady had been intact/a virgin at "consummation of the marriage".🤐
@JNG1074 жыл бұрын
@@Lily1127channel You call marriage a stupid social invention. But then proceeded to praise the laws of nature. Umm who exactly came up with this laws of nature. Isnt that not a social construct? Meanwhile marriage between man and woman came from the bible (Book of Genesis). By the way this idea of arranged marriages is however a stupid social invention. God never said marry people you do not love. However he warned against fornication(sex before marriage) as it can lead to varied problems young people suffer today. For example Broken hearts, Teen pregnancies, Infidelity(if we choose to act only on sexual attraction instead of a mutual sense of affection, trust and love then no wonder divorces are so common nowadays). I know its hard to actually hold out until wedding night let alone find a partner who is willing to hold out at all. But it isnt impossible or flawed to do so. Which is why i wouldnt say waiting till the wedding night after courting ofcourse is a stupid social invention

@@JNG107 I didn't call marriage a stupid social invention OMG 😄😄😄😄 You completely misunderstood it. There was no privacy for the newly wed couple in most of the royal courts really. In Portugal all the court accompanied the couple to their bedroom and stayed there for a while.I think that in France it was even worse;the courtiers witnessed everything.There was a true procedure about getting ready for the wedding night in the Portuguese court.We could witness that with the Portuguese royal family who accompanied and helped Pedro and Leopoldina to get ready for their wedding night in " Novo Mundo".Quite funny. In the "Tudors" season one ,the court also witnessed the wedding night between the Portuguese king and Margaret Tudor ( they never married , that was an historical mistake).

I have read somewhere that witnesses had to be present to ensure the consummation of the marriage. So that later, there could be no claims from either party that the union wasn't consummated because that could be grounds for annulment. And since those marriages were usually for political gains, I doubt they wanted to lose the other party over some technicality.

Pretty ahistorical, for one, she didn’t speak German and he only spoke a little french so they communicated in Latin which neither of them spoke fluently.
@Lily1127channel3 жыл бұрын
The actress who plays Mary is French and she spoke French in the miniseries originally, they just dubbed it in the German version for the German audience 🙂 Yes Latin was the language that medieval Europeans usually used for international communication in such cases, but close to no historical drama really makes the actors speak to each other in the original Latin 😀 Every production is pretty ahistorical in that sense. They usually just speak in English (American and British productions) 😄
@sinaain3 жыл бұрын
@@Lily1127channelthanks, but my point is that they would have had to communicate in a dead language neither of them spoke fluently which would have given everything a different dynamic.
@Lily1127channel3 жыл бұрын
@sinaain Yes, I understand that. My point is that there are tons of such situations in historical dramas when the characters are of two different mother tongues and they should speak Latin to each other, and no director ever makes the actors learn and speak Latin for those scenes 🙂 In theory, it would be nice to have 100% historical accuracy in any such scene. But in the actual world of shooting a movie, one simply has to be practical, usually.

Although it's just artistic licence in this scene it's plausible. These guys were, in fact had to be, multilingual. The apocryphal quote of Charles V "I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men and German to my horse" They had lands all over the place with people speaking many languages. So although there's no reason to suppose they spoke two languages in the bedroom, each understanding the other's better than they spoke it - it was possible.

the actual Maximilian would have NEVER shown his naked body like that. much less kick out all these people, that could have been grounds for annulment. but he was very considerate, so I think the part where he was asking her for help and money would have been very accurate. maybe not on their _wedding night_ though... but that part of the conversation does seem very much his character.
