The reason she flips when being called crazy is because her parents died in a car crash during a rain storm. And she thinks Pudge the fish controls the weather so she appeased him by bringing an offering/sandwich to keep the weather safe.

She dedicated most of her reign to restoring native hawaiian rights but american plantation/business owners that were backed/supported by US military Staged a COUP and overthrew her. Her people tried to throw an insurrection and failed and she was charged with treason & put under house arrest. She refused to go to the annexation ceremonies. As a kid, you don’t relate with Nani and find her annoying. As an adult, I’m rooting for Nani all the way! She’s a teen who not only lost her family but also has to take responsibility of her little sister. If you look closely into her room, there are surfing trophies and medals. It shows that maybe she planned to become a pro surfer before her families death. Shes had to take care of so much! She even put away her relationship and life to raise Lilo. I’ll always be heated how people praised Anna and Elsa to be the perfect sister duo of Disney. Nope. Lilo and Nani take the Cake ***So when I say i found Nani annoying I was watching it from a child’s perspective like around 8 or 9. And I just wanted to see lilo and stitches adventure! Long story short, as kids we don’t really see Nani as anything but a side character but growing up we end up seeing things differently! Also thanks for the likes ❤️***

Nani was not annoying for me, but definitely more irrelevant. Not truly realizing what and how much she is dealing with and sacrificing. It was much easier to understand Lilo and Stitch as a kid. But as an adult, you can see Nani is just another kid trying her best to raise her sister. So many hardships they are both dealing with.

I also like that the movie manages to capture the nature of the sisters as well with how they get mad at each other, make up, how Nani takes care of Lilo much like their parents did etc, etc.
@petrastedman669

It also feels incredibly real. She's her sister, not her mother. She's maybe late teens or early 20s, and has to deal with a lot of responsibility and is doing her honest best and trying to manage the consequences when she gets something wrong she wasn't prepared for. Not to mention Lilo is one of the best written child characters I've ever seen in a movie, period.
@sweeney60

@@petrastedman669 also let’s not forget that Nani and Lilo are sisters meaning they both lost their parents but Nani is not being given her time to grieve cause she’s had to step into the role of parent. How Nani has managed to keep it together as well as she has is nothing short of a miracle.

so, one of the dimensions of this movie that a lot of non-native folks may not pick up on is how disproportionately children are removed from indigenous homes. this is a global problem, but especially in north america, child protective services has very little grace with intermediate steps between identifying a problem environment and removing the kid from the family entirely. i have white friends who were required to go to parenting classes, get counseling, get job counseling, etc over the course of years and never had their children removed from their custody or had their kids placed with immediate family like grandparents while the parent got their shit together. conversely, i have an indigenous friend who had cps try to take his daughter away because they lived in a cabin off the grid and cps said that not having running water was unsanitary, i've seen infants taken away from their parents immediately after birth on the grounds of bogus drug test results, and i know a lot of 60+ year olds that were taken away from their families for residential schooling or because they weren't christian. so nani is reaffirming her and lilo's shared heritage before lilo is taken away by an agent of a colonizing govt, something that has been happening for generations.
@ambriaashley3383

Yeah it's so important to realize the racial and cultural bias that is inherent in our social services system. So many children (disproportionately POC children) have put into the system, into residential school, or Catholic services only to receive more abuse. I actually don’t think Lilo needed to be taken away from Nani. Unforeseen circumstances (aliens) aside she was doing her best and needed support. Like therapy, reliable childcare and more time to adjust, not CPS breathing down her neck. Plus, yeah they had their problems but I think the foster system would’ve been really damaging for Lilo. Generally it’s not great for anyone, but it would’ve been especially not great for a kid like Lilo. Even teenage parents get nine months to prepare. Nani lost her parents, probably had little time to process it, and then was tasked with taking care of a grief stricken younger sibling but was expected to handle things perfectly all the time or lose the only family she had left. I didn’t get this watching this in 2nd grade, but for a 19 year old she’s doing better than expected. She cares enough to be a good guardian, she’s just dealing with the parental equivalent of being thrown in the deep end and told to swim.

Well in reality (I know for NYC) she would have had an open investigation for 30 to 90 days if someone reported the family to CPS/DCFS and when a determination has been made if she was abusive/maltreated Lilo or the claims would be unsubstantiated. If the determination was substantiated Nani would be asked if she would like preventive services if she said no CPS would prob have a FTM (family team meeting) or a CSC (child safety conference) meeting to see if court intervention is needed. The family Court Judge would request for the Nani to comply with court ordered supervision for 6 months to a year with a CPS worker monitoring the family and local preventative services are put in as extra help and an extra set of eyes in the home. Removal is the last thing CPS/DCFS wants to do and most of the time when it takes place it is at the decision of a Family Court Judge as they have to write the order unless it's like an emergency untimely death/murder (it seems thier parents passed some time ago and no one reported it immediately) of a parent and there are no custodial or legal guardians (like obtaining guardianship/custody from a family court ) then a temp removal/placement may take place. Trust me if CPS was involved this movie would be at least be a mini series of thier involvement.

This is one of my favorite Disney movies ever. I really do love the fact they don't gloss over anything, and there is a learning experience for all main characters, and the background tone of "it's okay to be different, and to feel like you not fit in, and to have a family that isn't conventional, you just need to stick together with those you love and everything will work out". When I was little I didn't fully understand the scene where Nani is singing. I thought it was the anniversary of their family's death or something and that was a sort of ritual they did together, and that it wasn't until their house blew up that Bubbles decided to take Lilo away. Looking at it now, I can feel the scene has much more intensity of emotion. They are preparing to separate from their only surviving family member.

Not a big deal obviously because it's just a movie but I want to point out that the social worker wasn't "just doing his job" actually. Like he's pretty bad at being a social worker. The goal is always supposed to be to keep the child with family if at all possible, baring abuse ofc. They have resources for helping guardians secure employment, access social services, parenting classes etc. He never offered her any of that and made it seem that if Lilo had to go to foster care it was going to be permanent which I didn't have to be, the point if foster care is that it's supposed to be temporary.

@@mellysomethingclever the house exploding happens at the end. A real social worker would take the bricks comment with a huge grain of salt as there is no physical evidence and teachers and mandated reporters have not reported any suspicions of physical abuse. This movie is careful to show how good Nani actually is for Lilo. She understands her personality and admits her own mistakes like a parent should. She tells Lilo her boss is a vampire so Lilo doesn’t feel guilty about Nani losing her job, which also distracts Lilo from the bleak situation. With the right support, Nani would be an ideal guardian. Sadly, children of native people and poc are taken away far more easily and often by social services. They have so little guidance in finding resources to help them get jobs and benefits to support themselves. I always thought the movie did a good job hinting at that, with Nani having to job hunt all by herself as a teenager.

Lilo & Stitch was my favorite movie as kid. Never fully understood the true meaning behind the events that have unfolded in the film when I was younger, but now that it’s been a whole lot of years since I last watched this one, I realized that it’s really not just about Stitch being this weird alien creature meeting with a human girl, Lilo. It also emphasized the significance of family, friendship, and most importantly, sisterly bond, which I find quite rare in other Disney movies.
