As someone who does study writing (especially comedy) Lily straight up has no idea how a running gag works in the slightest. Keep in mind I’m not a professional writer or comedian, this is just all the things I know from other people’s and my own experiences that I learn from over the years. A lot of inexperienced writers think that a running gag and a repeating gag are the same thing. But just saying the same joke over and over again itself isn’t funny, you need to **add** something to it each time you say it or it gets stale. This is why the rule of three exist; every time you add a gag, it must be used only three times, with the third being the loudest and most powerful joke. Since it’s relevant, let’s use Utena as an example. Remember the scene where Nanami was trying to embarrass Anthy by putting animals in various places in her room? The first time was small (putting a snail in her pencil case only to find there’s MULTIPLE snails in her pencil case), The second one was a little bit more bigger (putting a snake in her drawer only to be eated by a badger), and the third and last time is the loudest (trying to put an octopus in her closet only to be bombarded by a octopus BALLOON). Now, imagine if that scene only had the pencil box joke *over and over and over again with no buildup or changes to it?* That’s exactly what all of Lily Orchards jokes feel like. There’s no real set up or punchline. It’s just “ha ha funny word!” Or “lmao REFERENCE!!”, you may think that somebody who is apparently a fan of American sitcoms would like, watch any of the good ones and not just the fucking Big Bang theory (can’t relate, I’m more of a Britcom kind of guy). I could talk more about the reference humor and how it’s just expected for you to laugh because it’s a reference to something Lily likes…. I wanna point out Wakaba's duel is not only unique because Utena cuts her down with her own sword, but it's implied Wakaba actually remembers. She never collapsed like the other duelists, and things don't go back to the status quo when Wakaba goes home. If anything it's really depressing cuz Saionji is no longer there and she's all alone again. She just wants someone to make her feel special, but she doesn't realize she has all those special qualities already and doesn't need someone to bring those traits out.

The lags were something. But yeah that's definitely not how you do an "in a nutshell" styled video. Like at points, I swear Lily wanted to be Viva Reverie but didn't understand why Viva Reverie's But Really Really Fast series works when her's doesn't. 1. Viva actually likes what she covers in her series and any jabs is just purely "yeah this wasn't the best but I'll still respect it". 2. Any running gags don't go on forever and usually have a spin on it (example, almost each part of JoJo but Really Really Fast has this plane that always crashes in the same stock desert background. However there's always a twist like it looks like its about to crash, doesn't, but does anyways and it's based on the fact this actually happens in a Jojo episode. So it becomes a "it's funny because it's true" moment). 3. Viva actually has media literacy in what she makes, even pointing out the oddities (like the "except for when they don't" when explaining the Stand rules in JJBABRRF Pt 3, because sometimes yeah it do be like that) Either way Lily just can't do anything comedic.

i just thought of something that might potentially explain why lily would make a half our abridged video of an anime she hates …and it has to do with kingdom hearts, because everything with her always comes back to either kh or su so, about that kh2 in a nutshell video? well in many ways it's a fan poking fun at a story they love. one joke is literally mickey mouse pointing out a retcon, where as another is calling a fan favourite character a massive idiot, but they're still just jokes. this is relevant because the fact they're not actual critiques probably went over her head. lily, despite claiming to "love" kingdom hearts she really doesn't get it, and this manifests as her having a very "i'm better than you" attitude to over kh fans, and even over kingdom hearts itself. her video where supposedly gushing about the series starts with her mocking it, saying its story is actually simple and clean, the characters are happy and uncomplex, and that you don't have to play all the games. it unironically sounded like something you'd post in a subreddit to rage bait fans, and if she does like it, it's in the same way you'd like a child's finger painting. i could easily see someone like her making an "in a nutshell" video about a series she doesn't like to mock it, and well, i think in fact i now have.

What’s crazy to me is that Lily got her start (essentially) on KZbin making tiny, 5-10 minute videos using her own voice to crack jokes about MLP, Steven Universe, and RWBY. Why would she do a “Just a Pancake” Parody that’s 30 minutes long? Even Trueblade Seeker (does Just a Pancake type videos, but focuses on Final Fantasy instead of Kingdom Hearts) will do 14 minutes maximum, and split them into two parts if they get too long. Plus they focus on making jokes rather than just summarize the plot with parody names (which is the only unique thing Lily brings to the table, here).

the tts voice can be used well. A good example is if the emperor had a text to speech device. where the only person who uses tts is the emperor himself since in the lore he can't speak like we do. It's used to great affect since his role in the series is just to point out how dumb the imperium is since they’re so zealous that they let some evil motherfucker named Goge vendire take control for of the ecclesiarcy. the emperor is the vessel for people new to 40k since he's confused about a lot of the shit going on in current 40k since he's been kinda unconscious for the last 30,000 years

Holy shit, Lily's so bad at this! The scene gives her this super weird visual where there's balloons everywhere. PERFECT setup for literally any joke! But because it's Lily, all she can think of is "Why are there balloons? I don't get it. Everyone else should also ask about that." It's so easy! My actual first thought: "I've summoned you here today to discuss-" "What's with the balloons?" "Don't worry about it. Anyways, regarding Utena-" "No, seriously, what's the deal here?" "Don't worry, the Cannibal Clown Posse came to town." "You mean Insane Clown Posse, right?" "....." (sounds of screaming in the background as it cuts to the wide shot with balloons everywhere) "... Just go sword fight Utena...." It's like Lily actually doesn't know how to create new continuity for the bit. Like, this is kind-of funny for the Kingdom Hearts video because it's so compressed and the plot's an absolute clusterfuck, so it's just nonstop insane bullshit happening. But Lily seemed to miss that part of things? If you take too long to finish the summary then you're not making fun of how weird the plot is. You're just making a bad episode summary ft. occasional swearing.

As much as I love the super chats, they got in the way of really of tearing this video apart. Especially around the Wakaba fight. I think the joke Lily is making is that Utena doesn't want to fight Wakaba, but, "she will do what she must" (insert Star Wars reference). It's still an awful "joke". *Edit* Cassidy is a really bad reference to Butch Cassidy, who I'm guessing Lily misinterprets as a lesbian (Butch Cassidy was a square-faced man who robbed banks).

As someone who has never watched this anime, nor have I ever even heard of it before, Lily has fundamentally fucked up the “in a nutshell” format by being unfunny, uninspired, and even if she was describing events as they happened, I still don’t have a fucking clue what the show, characters, or plot is about in the slightest. Abridgers at least fucking try to keep to the arcs and only divert slightly if it adds another layer that isn’t normally discussed in the scene being parodied.

Alright, now that I’m properly able to see what I missed before the “Is this someone who’s Actually funny” confusion in the stream itself…I have something to say about this Mess I’m someone who actually Likes Just a Pancake’s formula, so the lack of understanding of the fundamentals of how to make this formula funny are Very annoying(But to quickly defend the original KH In a Nutshell parody by Mr Pancake, the lack of effort in stuff like the voices is intentional. He literally whips out MS Paint Art to summarize a confusing plot twist in the original KH). In a nutshell(hehehe), it’s basically a quick and snappy way of summarizing the series, while mocking the plot holes and bad parts of the source material’s writing. Not a retelling of the plot through a lense with NO understanding of writing as a concept(For example, “Okay I Believe You” is basically mocking how gullible KH characters are, in the face of VERY obvious reasons to avoid it(“Help me find my friend, it is definitely not a trap”. “Okay I believe you”). But the way Lily uses it, it’s basically just spouting the obvious(“The castle’s a mirage”. “Okay I believe you”. “No, it really Is a mirage”. “Okay I believe you”)) If you want an actually Funny introduction to this formula, Trueblade Seeker does it correctly with FF7, while also throwing in a couple jokes of his own. And even if you still don’t like this kind of content, at least we agree on Lorch’s lack of humor in any way shape or form

God, this hurts so much... Lily Orchard literally just wrote a character to be a strawman to bring up ONE show she doesn't like just so she could shoot down an opinion nobody seriously has for a bit that has nothing to do with anything. There's no reason this character would say this in the dub, it has nothing to do with their Utena characterization, it just exists so she can dunk on people she pretends are real who think "One Piece is the best thing made by humanity". Like, this is literally the equivalent of when they dressed someone up like the Monopoly Guy in Ace Ventura just so Ace could look at them and go "LOOK AT THIS MONOPOLY GUY!" It's super lazy writing and it couldn't feel more forced for the bit. I genuinely wonder if Lily's proud of this moment because "that'll shut One Piece fans up", or if she was just so desperate to figure out a joke for this character that she just threw in some random bullshit and called it a day.
