I know it must have been a difficult decision to make about rendering the wall, but I have a feeling you won't regret it. Dark rusticity, no matter how charming, can get old during the long winters. The lighter version will help lift your spirits, I'm pretty sure. I'm not convinced crofters replaced the thatch on the roof every year. In other parts of the UK, thatch lasts up to 30 - 40 years, depending on the material used.... The rocks hiding the Starlink "cairn" is a brilliant solution. Congratulations on the increase of subscribers - you definitely derserve it! Have a great week.
@TheScottishIsle7 ай бұрын
I've read from more than one source that around these parts, it was indeed an annual chore to replace the roof! 😭 I don't know if it's the damp conditions/peat smoke/rushes or heather thatch/plain tradition, but there are eyewitness accounts from the late 19thC right to '60s! You're right about more normal thatching, though, it lasts decades. How we'd love to rethatch this old girl. Thank you so much for commenting and watching, it's great to have you with us. Kx

I have been watching your videos since the beginning but have been unable to comment. They are great! My mum was from Scotland and told many tales of growing up out of town. Your videos have explained and brought to life many of the things she told me of. Well done both on your decision to take over the island and do the necessary work. Love the idea for the Starlink platform. As you say it's the only flat land. Can't wait for the next one x

Of course, you are correct. However, the abuse (for it is abuse), which comes our way for doing nothing more than sharing our life on KZbin beggars belief. It's a tiny percentage of people. In fact so small that they really do not warrant any further discussion. But still, some people are just incredibly mean-spirited and clearly angered by what we do here.

Scott get a big old paint brush or soft bristled sweeping brush head for wetting the walls prior to rendering and when your using a hammer & chisel use the hammer on its side to strike the chisel with instead of the head as you do when nailing as you tend not to miss the chisel head that way and dont strike your wrist as much ( dont ask me how I know ) only how I do it I`m not telling you how to do it just a thought as I was watching Katie in your other videos when she was chasing the mortar out of the joints, from a fellow Yorkshireman really enjoying your channel having only found you last week I`m spending hours watching you both keep it up your doing a fantastic job
