I think the reason why this is USB 2 only is quite obvious: USB 3 requires up to an additional 4(!) shielded(!) pairs of wires which would make the cable a lot thicker... And once we are there, people are going to complain about the lack of USB Alt features, adding two more wires and before you know it people want Thunderbolt 4 instead which requires a much more complicated signal path and all of a sudden you have a really expensive and stiff TB4 cable when all you wanted was quick charging...

Exactly. If people want the faster data speeds that’s what the Thunderbolt cables are for.

@@Pumpyaa I also don't get why people want to pump dozens of Wh into their mobile phone quickly every few hours instead of finding a way to have days worth of usage; but that's what people do 🤷♂. The question here really is: Why wouldn't you offer 240W when it's essentially a free product feature; a lot of people would be really pissed off if they actually required 240W of power transfer capability but the cable doesn't offer it for no good reason, so this is clearly the better way around. You clearly have no idea how hard it is to find a highspeed cable with even just 100W power capability: Most vendors even claim incorrectly to support highspeed but don't, or they support high speed for forgot the e-marker chip to get beyond 65W. It took me a long time (and many costly misfires) to find one that actually does what it claims to do and it did cost quite a bit...
@danielegger64605 ай бұрын
@@Pumpyaa Sure you can go single cable, but a proper USB4 cable is rather stiff (and way more expensive!) which can be annoying a lot of times especially when charging a device from a wall plug. I think a lot of people might be happy to accept a USB2 only data cable for the occasional data exchange when they really are not going to do any data transfer at all most of the time. YMMV, I actually both types of cables on me when travelling. The important bit is actually knowing what you have, I would hazard a bet, that most people think they bought a USB3+ cable and will never notice that the ad got it wrong and they're really using a USB2 only cable, potentially even with the CC lines disconnect so 5V charging only (which you actually need to power Raspi 4 with a proper USB-C power supply -- ask me how I know).

Thank you for testing this with the Anker power bank. I bought two of these cables specifically to charge this exact Anker power bank, Steam Deck, iPhone, and Apple Watch at the same time. 240W gives me more than enough overhead even if all devices are charging at the peak and the braided construction is just a nice added bonus.

This is by far the best braided cable I have ever owned. It's far better than the so-called high-class Anker braided cables and Baseus ones. It's funny that Apple has the best stock cable compared to third-party ones.

On the next video load the cable into a dummy load for 20min to verify the 240W claim.. You can use a thermal camera to see the thermal characteristic under load.

Isn’t this the same 2m cable that they shipped with MacBooks for ages before they switched to MagSafe 3? Doesn’t seem like it’s a new cable.
@a.sorokin10 ай бұрын
No, they are not the same. The new cable is visually thicker and braided. From a technical point of view, the new cable supports 240W and PD 3.1, enabling it to fast-charge the newest MacBook Pro 16" (late 2023) at MagSafe speed. The old cable only supported 100W and older protocols.

What devices can take 240W PD?
@benjamindepaz84298 ай бұрын
2:28 It's "pretty slow" because it's a USB2 cable not a USB3 cable. 35.8 MB/s is about 290Mb/s - which isn't quite the 480Mbps of the theoretical max of USB2. But I seriously doubt Apple intended this to be a data transfer cable. It advertises 240w right on the label. That indicates their intention on engineering the cable was to push a lot of power through - meaning it was intended to be a charging cable for high-power devices like their MacBook Pros, not a data cable. In fact, these cables came out around the time that USB3 was brought to iPhone Pro. And Apple specifically said that if you want USB3 speeds for the phone you need to buy a USB3 cable. Which that last part is kind of confusing on their part because they don't actually have any cables they sell that are marketed as "USB3" cables; unless you count their 3rd party brand cables from Belkin and others. If you want to buy a cable from them that supports USB3 you have to buy their Thunderbolt 4 Pro cables. Which, to my knowledge, no where on the packaging does it refer to USB3 even though by implication it will support the USB3 protocol. But even though they may have primarily intended it to be a power charging cable, it will also support other applications just fine. For example: Apple CarPlay works great over that speed. Even Apple's losses audio doesn't need anywhere near 290Mbps. So the cable isn't "pretty slow" it just can't reach USB3 speeds because it's only USB2. But not all cables should, or need to, be USB3 - it depends on the purpose. It's sort of like saying that a "Ferrari" is "pretty slow" because it's not as fast as an F-15.

So if I bought one of these would it charge faster than when I’m using my Apple USB C fast charger plug with standard woven 1M wire that comes with the iPhone 15 pro max? I could ideally do with a longer wire for when I’m playing on my iPhone using my backbone aswell having a longer wire to not be tethered to the wall more
