Think Corden, realising Patrick was dying on stage, could have just stayed quiet, handed him the rope he needed and waited for the tumbleweeds to roll past. Then at the end of his bit, plus a few seconds of unbearable silence, clapped enthusiastically and said ‘Let’s hear it for Patrick Stewart !’. Instead he let his insecurity get the better of him and had to lash out, which made him look just as bad. If nothing else, James needs to learn to laugh at himself, and take it on the chin (like he must have done, to get the Late Late gig 😉)

But it also shows that being really good at reciting shakespeare in a posh accent does not require any significant intelligence, wit, self awareness or social skills. I met Patrick Stewart during his royal shakespeare company run in 2008 when I was 15. I've met a lot of celebrities through my career, but Patrick Stewart I've never forgotten because of how intensely vile he was towards me and other people. I approached him and politely asked for his autograph in my theatre programme. He ignored me and looked down his nose at me with total disgust when I saw him sat outside the theatre where his play was showing. I awkwardly walked off feeling completely embarrassed. I was only 15, so couldn't measure the pros and cons of approaching a celebrity, especially one sat directly outside the theatre their major play was showing at the time and didn't understand why fans wouldn't approach him when they're literally there to see him act in this show. I sat on the grass bank in front of the theatre watching him after this and he did the exact same thing to a girl in a wheelchair and her carer who approached him, except this time he violently waved her away from him and continued drinking his coffee. Seriously dude. Why would you sit directly outside the front of the theatre where your show was on at the time then act confused and aggressive when fans approached? It boggles the mind. Then I met the staff members who were his chaperones, drivers and assistants during the production. On their smoke breaks by the stage door, they would often share experiences with the people hanging out to catch a glimpse of either him or David Tennant at the stage door. They openly shared their stories of disgust because of how unbelievably unpleasant he was to be around and work for apparently. One told me that his grandmother who lived next door to "Sir Patrick" as they were told to call him, during the production (of which was assigned his temporary rental house). She had fallen over on the street as he got out of his chauffeurs car and proceeded to step over her and ignored her pleads for help. Luckily the driver got out and helped her. But "Sir Patrick" did not give a single flying shit and went into his house without saying anything or acknowledging her. From what I've heard from people who have worked in PR with him, he is only nice to those he deems worthy. So first class airline hosts, well connected people and people with a lot of wealth. Everyone else is dog shit on the bottom of his shoe. He deliberately picks who gets his good side and who doesn't. The type to think he could fart in a jar and sell it for millions because his shit couldn't possibly stink. Cut from the same cloth as Cilla Black. Except she reserved all of her poison for airline hosts it seems. Sir Pat saves his disgust for the working class and his staff. James Cordon is from a working class background, so of course he got an acid tongue attack from Sir Pat within seconds of being on stage together. Very, very nasty piece of work. The Jonas brothers comment is also Sir Dick outing Cordon from the closet with heavy hinting. Look at Cordon's face as he says it, complete and utter fear. I don't like Cordon either, but it's hard to forget the aggressive sneer Patrick Stewart gave me when I was 15 years old. David Tennant who was in the same production however was extremely patient, graceful and kind towards the people who approached him. I don't think it's a coincidence they've never worked with each other again.

I saw Patrick Stewart at a supermarket in West London last year. I told him how lovely it was to meet him in person, but that I didn’t want to be a dick and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Mars Bars in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
