Dude with the face paint is the guitarist Wes Borland. That dirty grit you hear on the guitar is the use of a distortion pedal. KoRn helped get Limp Bizkit signed. As the story goes, Fred Durst (Limps singer) was a tat artist who worked on Fieldy (KoRn bassist) several times and eventually became friends. Durst handed him a demo tape, which was later handed to KoRns producer. KoRn and Limp had a fun beef track called “All in the Family” off KoRn’s album Follow the Leader.

I think beef between Nu Metal bands was pretty rare. What happened more often was beef between Nu Metal bands and more traditional metal bands. Nu Metal wasn't that accepted in the metal scene. It was more seen as the next big sellout mainstream thing, that was all over MTV and the radio. With weird new "non fitting" elements like rap or DJs and turntables. Nu Metal often was judged by the traditional metal scene, like mumble rap by the traditional Hip Hop scene these days. But these Nu Metal bands also were something like the entrance for a lot of kids into the metal scene, that did not listen to metal before. Which was a good thing after all.

@OJ McClanahan Right. It happened a lot between the fan groups. But it has always been a thing between "old school" and "new school" bands. Remember metal bands making fun of grunge, and later making fun of nu metal, saying all of these were "whimps and posers". So there was the term of "True Metal" calling everything else false metal. So the fans just did, what their icons did. Nu Metal bands had a new sound, with a lot of distortion, they rarely used solos in their music. Everything was focused on the singer and the lyrics, less on instrumentals, the production was more clean, radio friendly in a lot of cases. (I'm not criticising, just saying what has been discussed within the scene). The guitar riffing was less complex, but more like creating a beat, a flow. Nu Metal artists collaborated with rappers and pop artists. Not that classic metal musicians never collaborated with artists from other genres. But Nu Metal bands seemed to do that on a regular base, called rappers their homies, and seemed to be more familiar with them, than with actual metal artists. Suddenly there was an alienation within the metal scene. And it was very visual between fangroups. Think of the classic metal fan, wearing leather pants and jeans west, and the Nu Metal fan, wearing caps, sneakers and baggy pants, to give some stereotypes. 😄 After all I see it myself as a subgenre within the same scene, but a lot of traditional metal fans are still denying that Nu Metal is metal at all. A lot of metal fans are calling it just Hip Hop, while Hip Hop fans are calling it rock/metal or mocked it as "angry middleclass white guy music". It tried to be connective, but fanbases didn't want to connect. That's one of the reasons, why it was a thing of its time and disappeared again. It wasn't able to create something like an own and timeless identity.
@HailTheApocalypse4 жыл бұрын
Rage Against The Machine weren't very fond of them but it never stopped them from playing Killing in the Name Of during some shows. The song Hot Dog I think was a diss to Trent Reznor. But beef between Nu Metal bands? Not really sure of any.

@heavenstibetsee57164 жыл бұрын
Yes its a guitar riff. More specifically what makes this guitar so cool is he's bending an entire chord, not just one string. Gives its a super-heavy, off-kilter, wobble and bounce. Its great, and when the breakdown (flip) happens, it just absolutely FUCKING DESTROYS!!! Rearranged next

iirc it was more than just a distortion pedal (distorting the signal received from the magnetic pickups under the metal strings)... I believe Borland was using a detuned 7-string (has a low B string below the standard 6-strings low E string). This adds to the heaviness. Plus the bassist is in lockstep. Also, that guy with the makeup is the guitarist Wes Borland and he's a genius. Possibly one of the great, but most underrated guitarists in rock history.

I don't know much about guitars but to answer your question the "grimy" guitar sound is called "distortion" its created in electric guitars..you press a peddle with your foot and It changes the sound out of the amp. Don't ask me how it works though. There's also the "wammy bar" which you can mess with the sound

the guitar is in a C# tuning which is low and some type of distortion or fuzz, maybe a tube screamer and the amp, but also the almighty Wes Borland the guy in the makeup, he always performs in different guises. Everyone knew Korn was the best, and it was more like one big family that supported each other. Limp Bizkit arrived after Korn, then Linkin Park, and they were the biggest bands in rock when they hit the scene. Distortion makes guitars sound heavy. Btw electric guitars can plug into foot pedals. Foot pedals make all kinds of different sounds. It's an expensive hobby. Run dmc with Aerosmith, beastie boys, eminem, to as recent as that new Joyner Lucas usues guitar. Also theirs been plenty of beefs between rock artists. Dave m from megadeth was an original of Metallica for example.

That sound of the guitar is the extreme talent of Wes Borland. He is also the guy in the strange make up....
