Not a fan of that genre, but the lyrics resonated with me. I was hearing this about the time I separated from my first wife. She was certifiably a narcissistic sociopath, who built our sham of a marriage on lies and control. The story is far too convoluted to explain here, but it was bad. This song described her to the fucking letter.

When this song was on TRL (or was it just MTV?) every day, I was 12 and being bullied in school. I would get off the bus, run home crying, and turn on MTV. I will never forget the debut of this video and my first time hearing and seeing it. It was a particularly bad day at school and I was in deep, aching pain because of those kids. This video came on and held my attention and then I heard those words: "You think that everybody's the same. I don't think that anybody's like you." It wasn't just the words but it was also the way he sang them. It was a revelation and changed my entire perspective on the situation. After that, when the worst of the bullies would come up to me in the morning, I would remember this song from the evening before and recite those words in my mind and feel a sense of comfort and strength in myself that I had not felt before. It gave me so much strength. I was never as hurt again by what people said about me. I was free. I doubt the artist had any clue that their words would help out some random 12 year old in Huntersville, NC at the time. I wish I could thank them. If you are reading this, thank you! You changed my life for the better.

That’s the power of music. The words can be interpreted differently by every single person, the songwriter may have written it about one topic but we can hear the words as something else and there in lies the beauty of music and the written word. It can bring such emotion to us, love hate sadness strength ...... when a song truly gets to me I will get goosebumps on my arms and tears stream down my face uncontrollably. To put things into perspective, there is a person and there is a persona. What people do and did was judge the character that Fred Durst created for his art. If you examine the flip side aspect of the lyrics to 're-arranged', you'll find that reading between the lines procures very much a double edged sword. The song can either be your friend or enemy. He's giving you the option to either hang on every word he says, or step back and use some critical thinking for your own good. This was the sort of thing I think was very much misinterpreted by those who also judged the band superficially, and this included the name. Here is what Marilyn Manson has recently said about Fred to reiterate my musings www.alternativenation.net/marilyn-manson-reveals-bold-truth-limp-bizkit/

no matter what anyone says about limp bizkit, one thing for sure is that they are talented. they have made metal music feel so hip hop. Wes Borland has made guitar riffs that are heavy but feel so catchy to listen to. and Fred Durst have channeled deep emotion into frenetic music. believe me, not many metal band vocalists are able to do it. limp bizkit, you guys are the real hip metal.

This always reminds me of rainy spring mornings in the early 2000's. I had a friend in middle school who said this was his favorite Limp Bizkit song, and I always thought it was cool that he didn't immediately go for the more obvious and over the top singles that were dominating at the time. I remember one random gloomy rainy Saturday morning in March where I was hanging out over his house, before the Internet took over and there was really nothing else to do except sit around and chill without worrying about checking our phones 24/7 or being addicted to KZbin, and this came on MTV. To this day I always think the more somber instrumentals here plus the dark green filter over the video fits that rainy Saturday morning perfectly. And I often wish that I could relive little moments like that again, when the most important question of the day was how we were going to cure our boredom, because life really was that slow.

Still the best song, most unique sounding, and it captures the essence of music during that era. Limp Bizkit and Korn were kicking it at the time and we all loved it, except for some oldschool metalheads who still cannot get over it lol.
