Thanks Evelyn. Stephen looks a little cross eyed in that portrait.

Indeed. I noticed that, too 😆

I may or may not have chosen that painting on purpose. 😉
@raraavis77826 ай бұрын
@@EvelynEdwards Is there some significance to it, do you think? Some hidden meaning or symbolism? Or did the painter just faithfully depict reality? It would be interesting to know, if the portrait was commissioned by him directly. As I would for sure have expected a nobleman or monarch to be wanted to be depicted without such a flaw.

@@raraavis7782 that portrait is definitely not from the 12th Century. Depictions of King Stephen from the period you don’t get a sense of what he might have looked like.

He might have been, but during the early medieval period, nothing could be done to treat conditions of the eyes.

I've never understood why Matilda didn't execute Stephen. As always amazing video Evelyn.

Most monarchs steered clear of regicide. They didn’t want to set a precedent. Also it would have made the church VERY angry…and Matilda needed the church to back her.

Maybe Matilda thought Stephen was more valuable alive than dead.

I first learned about the Anarchy by reading the Brother Cadfael mystery series which takes place during the Anarchy. While I don’t like either Steven or Matilda it seems that Matilda and her adherents had a serious PR problem with treating the English people so disrespectfully that Team Steven appeared to be the lesser of two evils. Yes, I know that peasants and serfs were looked down upon by the higher echelons of that society, but they were the ones who were made to go out to fight. It would have be easier to fight for the cause if they had been treated with a modicum of respect. You know things were bad when the people of London shut Team Matilda out of London so that she, the rightful heir, couldn’t be crowned queen of England! Personally, I don’t think that her only problem in the people’s eyes was being a woman.
@EvelynEdwards5 ай бұрын
Actually it was a few things … most of the people round Matilda thought because she was a female that she’d take advice given and they would actually be the ones really in charge! That didn’t quite work out- she tried to rule like her father and first husband the Holy Roman Emperor. That didn’t go over well. The reason London tuned had to do with money. Plain and simple. Trade was being effected … and that made them turn. 💚
