I've really enjoyed this series. I just read a book about her last year.

Thanks Evelyn. Too early for a pragmatic sanction. It didn't even work that well in 1740 for Maria Theresa.

Too bad that Matilda was so haughty and full of herself. If she’d been more humble the English people wouldn’t have had to suffer a long drawn out civil war. She could have been an effective queen. Unfortunately, she was her own worst enemy. You know that a person is completely loathed and reviled when they are locked out of their own home town. Her son Henry II appears to have inherited his mother’s hubris, but because he was a man it was more acceptable to the knights, barons, church leaders and citizens who ultimately decided who would lead the country.

@@monicacall7532 I person disagree with this analysis. But that’s okay! We can disagree! I think London turned because of trade and I think she was considered “haughty” because she tried to require those around her to treat her as male monarchs were. They were unwilling, they thought she was going to/should defer to their council and she didn’t. She had pretty strong examples, her first husband and her father Henry I, who commanded tremendous respect. She couldn’t get the same.

So the true Queen Matilda and her sons never asended the throne ? Which means who ever sat on the throne after that were not true kings or Queens
@EvelynEdwardsАй бұрын
No! Her son eventually became king. He was Henry II!
