Daniel Day Lewis deserves an Oscar for this role, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

DD. Lewis is a great guy! My brother met him on the set of "The Crucible" on Hog Island in Massachusetts. Helped build the sets, bought breakfast & lunch for the trades working out there. Just an all'round regular guy. Rode his Harley to the set every day they filmed or just relaxed with everyone.

Most Civil War films like the old ones, Lincoln has a deep rough and calm voice... I never knew that he had a voice close to how Daniel was having in his role.

I am a fan of Lincoln for a large part of my life, from books and John Ford's movie "Young Mr Lincoln". I have a bit of a sense of the man. When I watched Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln, in the entire movie, he really became Lincoln the person, the truly haunting President in person. We don't see the acting anymore. Quite faultless.

Very interesting, and full credit to everyone who was involved in making this excellent tribute. Forgive me though for saying this, but how would we know how President Lincoln's voice actually sounded like? One could read written descriptions by the people who knew him at the time, and perhaps Daniel got close to it in that role. Personally though, I don't think we'll ever know.
@rcslyman89294 жыл бұрын
We never will, no. The phonograph was only invented in 1877, so any ability to actually record his voice wasn't around. All we have are the descriptions of his person and voice. If DDL didn't fully capture the actual voice, he certainly created one that fit the description, and captured the persona.
@tomrockhill86342 жыл бұрын
The reporters back in the day had to describe everything down to the detail with no T.V. or radio. Not hard to believe they would describe how he spoke.

I too can't wait to see this movie. However, why make such a fuss about the 'real voice of Lincoln' and how well it was done, when in fact there are no recordings of his voice? Other than that (suspension of disbelief) this looks like it could be a great movie.
@MsRymes12 жыл бұрын
There are descriptions of his voice that say his voice was shrill and high. So having a low booming voice would have been inaccurate .

At 0:12 "Red states and blue states were soaked in blood." That's an utter anachronism. The so-called red state vs. blue state concept didn't exist. The Republican Party was quite new, and its power center was the Northeast U.S. My goodness.
@GH-oi2jf4 жыл бұрын
Marc Lawrence - That was a present-day newsman speaking, so it isn’t really an anachronism. He is just applying modern terminology to the historical events. Maybe not helpful, though. Most Union (blue) states were not soaked in blood.

Tommy Lee Jones should not have been cast as Thaddeus Stevens. He should've been cast as *Andrew Johnson* - he looks just like him, and Jones (being a fellow southerner just like Johnson) has a voice and accent similar to what Johnson probably would have sounded like.
@EUSA17767 жыл бұрын
sean2015 Johnson wasn't really around during this story . He was a southern sympathizer , and more than likely opposed to the 13th Amendment . It's why Lincoln chose him for VP, he wasn't meant to take office .
@TimThomason5 жыл бұрын
@@EUSA1776 Andrew Johnson was a vocal supporter of the 13th Amendment, and almost all of Lincoln's proposals from his election as Vice President in November (and before) until Lincoln's death. After the assassination, Johnson was instrumental in pressuring the last couple reconstructed Southern states to ratify the amendment. It was the later amendments, and other proposals by the Radical Republicans, that Johnson disputed with and sank his presidency. In short, Johnson was a firm supporter of ending slavery (he felt it necessary to avoid another civil war), but was not in favor of voting rights or in general treating the former slaves as anything other than emancipated freedmen.
