I was fortunate enough to have seen Linda ronstadt and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra back when she toured in support of this album. Impeccable show and performance. She sounded as wonderful live as in the studio. ✌

That closing note gives me goosebumps. Linda is a heaven-sent brilliant star. There is not a song she has ever added her beautiful voice to that wasn't further ennobled.

Linda Rondstat had an amazing, strong voice and crossed many genres. She had a beautiful tone and so much power and control over her vocal skills that she could master any music style. One of my favorites is her cover of Roy Orbison's Blue Buyou.

She sounds so natural and so authentic, no matter which genre of music she decides to sing the most versatile voice of all time man, or woman. She did three albums with Nelson Riddle and his big band Orchestra so there’s at least 30 songs of her to choose from from those three albums. She does the Walt Disney classic When You Wish Upon a Star and that is absolutely beautiful.

Linda longed to record this type of music known as “The Great American Songbook”, as she remembered from her childhood. Her mother and maternal grandparents were fans of this style. Once she was able to collaborate with Nelson Riddle, she forged ahead and ended up recording three albums of this type of material. It was quite successful, in spite of the record label’s executives skepticism. She could literally sing anything and worked very hard at every style to develop nuances and make whatever she sang as authentic as possible. She’s a true artist who had an incredible instrument and used it beautifully. Thanks for recognizing this staggeringly talented woman. 🌺✌️

I think she approached Nelson Riddle about just doing a few songs. Nelson said no. He would only do a whole album.

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock & even opera. And with this song she again shows she can also do the great classic crooner ballad style music from the past. This album has a lot of great songs such as "I've Got A Crush On You", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "What'll I Do" etc.

This was Linda in her "crooner" period performing what are called "standards" -- hit songs from the 1910s thru the 1950s. Linda also did country, rock, pop, light opera, etc. She was a singular talent. And by all accounts a sweetheart of a human being. (I saw her open for Neil Young March 1973 in Seattle.) 😊

Linda's recordings with Nelson Riddle are my favorites. I'm disappointed I never got to see Ms Linda in person in concert.😢 One of the most talented and recognized singers of the 20th Century.
@debbiechang5781Ай бұрын
I had the great fortune to see her three times in person and I thoroughly cherish those memories. The first two times were during the 70’s, when she was touring with her rock band and filling sports arenas. Even with the logistical nightmares of showcasing her gorgeous voice in hockey venues in which the acoustics were not intended for music, she still managed to sound like a turbo charged angel 😂. The third performance I saw was when I took my aging mother to New York City to see a Broadway performance of “Pirates of Penzance”, featuring Linda Ronstadt as “Mabel”. It was a thrill for both of us for a imultitude of reasons. I cherish all of these memories of Linda and how she shared her wonderful gift with all of us. 🌸💐✌️

The deep meaning of this song is almost entirely conveyed by the beauty and emotive expression of Linda Ronstadt's vocals and the accompanying music. The lyrics alone don't look like a song on paper, but very few words from one of two people who haven't seen each other in a long time. The ordinary opening question, "what's new?", IMO, is said initially to hide the strong feelings that are still felt, which eventually come out in full force: "I still love you!"

This song was a big hit for Bing Crosby in 1939. The whole album of old songs is fantastic. I think you would enjoy a similar record by Harry Nilsson called "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night" from 1979. Arranged by Gordon Jenkins who worked with Frank Sinatra. My favorites: "What'll I Do" and "Always", both by Irving Berlin.

Ms Ronstadt said she wanted to bring Standards "Out of the Elevators" by doing these three albums. Back in the early 70s she and JD Souther would listen to the Frank Sinatra with Nelson Riddle albums as they wound down in the evening. When she considered doing these albums she said she wanted it to sound like the Nelson Riddle albums. She didn't even know if he was still alive but when the record company approached him to work with her, he had no idea who she was. He asked his daughter about her and could she do the songs justice. His daughter played her some Ronstadt albums and the agreed to work together. Ms Ronstadt grew up in Tucson, AZ and identifies as a Mexican-American. She spoke Spanish at home but was required to speak English at school to avoid being punished.

Great reaction. This song is an “American Standaed” from the 1940s. Nelson Riddle is the conductor and arranger of this song as well as all of the songs on Linda’s “What’s New” album. Riddle has worked with Sinatra, Nat King Cole and many others. Give a listen to Willie Nelson’s cover of “Moonlight in Vermont” from his “Stardust” album loaded with American Standards.

Sadly, about 15 years ago Linda was diagnosed with rare condition called progressive supranuclear palsy, which is similar to Parkinson’s disease and has no known cure. It affected her whole body including her vocal chords. She can no longer sing, but she has a huge catalog to listen to. Her voice will live on.

Speaking of meeting old lovers, I know that you guys like Simon and Garfunkel and I'm not sure if it is both of them or just Paul Simon but you should listen to "Still Crazy After All These Years". The song begins with, "I met my old lover on the street tonight. She seemed so glad to see me, I just smiled. Then we talked about some old times and we drank ourselves some beers, still crazy after all these years".
@spackar27207 ай бұрын
The whole point of Linda Ronstadt's three albums with Nelson Riddle was to sing "old school" Great American Songbook songs which were originally written and recorded decades earlier. So even during the eighties when she made the albums the songs she sang on them were "old".

GREETINGS EARTH PEOPLE: Welcome to the world of the Great American Songbook. There are other rock and pop artists who have also produced albums from the Songbook: Harry Nilsson, Rod Stewart, and there's one more I was thinking about, but I can't recall who it is. This body of songs spans the 20s to the 60s and is considered American Classical music. Angelina Jordan draws on the Songbook for many of her covers, which makes her unique among young artists. Most young people have been exposed to the Songbook through film and memes, although generally they are unaware of it.

After the ill-fated tribute of Patsy Cline - Always with several overdubbed songs weren't so great for MCA Nashville on October 24, 1980 - it was time to make a healthy comeback. For What's New? - singer/songwriter Linda Ronstadt has joined forces with the legendary Nelson Riddle as arranger/conductor in their Grammy Award winning tune for Asylum Records in 1984 - followed by two more lovely efforts: Lush Life and For Sentimental Reasons (co-arranged and co-conducted by Peter Matz).
