Linda I have already a cryptomeria for many years in a big pot. The goid thing is ...if a branch die back to the base ...at the base plenty new branches wil grow back. This is what I like about the cryptomeria. And I was a bit surprised ... it also produces pollen...a lot of yellow dust ... I m a big fan of cryptomeria. Regards, Marcus

Love, love, love cryptomeria! Just got one last fall. It came through our winter storm in Texas like a champ. We'll see how it holds up to our heat. I'm a little reluctant to put it in our full sun. I'm looking forward to seeing what you plant this year as I, too, am looking for cold and heat tolerant replacement plants. I lost a lot this winter ❄️.

I really like the look of the cryptomeria foliage, maybe you’ll use them more often in topiary work. I was thinking the same thing as Stewart with regard to the central stem! Watching you prune is so relaxing for me, I wouldn’t have minded this video as pt.1 and pt.2. My experience with Cryptomeria is a lot of cleanup in spring and fall of fallen, dead, brown and scratchy pieces of branches. I worked as an estate gardener, zone 5, southern NH for many years. Some of those years I tended the Japanese Garden where there were many, very tall Cryptomeria japonica trees. My other and first assigned garden was the Monet Garden.

Linda, it is always good to see this technique in real time. Thank you! Two questions: Will you protect this--bring it under cover--if your temps drop significantly to prevent newly cut tips from winter burn? And how long would you expect it to take to grow out the bottom sphere until the plant looks symmetrical--it this something that you expect would occur within two growing seasons or is it a much longer term project with a cryptomeria? Also, I have watched your propagation video a couple of times and find is most useful. Could you show us again how you would root some of those cuttings in your own garden and grow them up? I don't have access to a cold frame or greenhouse, but I do really like to start new plants from cuttings. Like other gardeners, I've had good luck with some things and no luck with others. Semi-hardwood cuttings of deciduous plants root best for me. At this time of year, I would probably throw the cuttings in a bucket of rain water while pruning, then strip a bit from the bottom to keep them hydrated, stick in rooting hormone, put into pots of sterilized soil mixed with perlite and coarse sand, place them in a protected place outdoors to root, keep them damp and PRAY. I'd hope for rooted cuttings by June and I'd be overjoyed with a 30% success rate. I'd likely not cover with a cloche--should I? Does this sound about right to root your larger cuttings of cryptomeria or is there another trick to it? Thank you!
@LindaVater3 жыл бұрын
Jean your technique sounds spot on! At this point, I just keep checking the ten-day forecast. 10 days out I’m still looking good and don’t think I’ll bring it in. Great question

I don't understand . . . the topiary has the obvious ball formation at the top and the exposed trunk. The bottom portion is so thick that it looks more like a wreath. So does the lower trunk eventually grow so it can be pruned into a ball? or does more pruning of the lower ball need to be done in steps so as not to shock the plant?
@LindaVater3 жыл бұрын
I said lower ball, but I guess I really meant a lower circular form. It may always stay kind of flat but will fill out. It will tell me what it wants to do as it grows :-)
