Everything you said is so accurate, especially about how you can learn a lot about someone by how they spend their time. Yeah, you can learn a language for literally any reason, but a language takes a LOT of time and work to even get to the intermediate level, much less an advanced level, so at the end of the day, it's all about if you're putting in the time and effort into making some progress.

True, you would think that a language like French or Spanish which is closer to English would be easier but no, it still takes hundreds or hundred or hours or even thousands to achieve that native-like fluency.

Exactly. I feel like most people are impatient and want results now, rather than taking the time to get a great foundation of habits, so that they will definitely have results in the future, with little effort and stress. I learn chinese like for 1 hour on italki every week and I do 1 hour of self studying and three years later, this has helped me reach B1 level in chinese.

I agree with her statement. It really depends on how you study or engage with that specific language. I've been into Korean for almost 7 years but have never had enough time to practice Korean. I kept watching videos with subs, then no subs and now I can understand almost everything but I still don't know how to write easy A1 words although I know how to use abbreviations in social media.

My writing also sucks because I watch tv and speak, but never write and Korean isn’t super-phonetic, so there are multiple possibilities for how to spell stuff.

i've been learning korean since 2018 and i'm at the point where i can fluently read novels without ever learning from a textbook, i'm really proud of myself for it hehe, learning korean THROUGH korean (webtoons and then novels) it's why i think i have a lot of confidence in making sentences myself, because i don't have to think 'am i translating this literally from english? does this phrase really exist?' because i can trust i've seen it somewhere before + my subconscious is just providing it back to me; i'm not just using something i've made up and convinced myself is natural... i really wanna start learning a second language but nothing is as interesting to me as korean in terms of alphabet, native words, and grammar. korean is such a gem, a whole language family of itself... i'm satisfied with only knowing korean tbh, it's such a good language i'm finally old enough to take TOPIK this year + i'm applying for study abroad to my dream korean uni for next year (so i could totally take topik then) but i honestly don't even hold topik as a goal anymore. like you said, it focuses on a very limited range of korean, someone could get topik level 6 but not have the ability to read a book etc... i think it focuses too much on science + political vocab which is hardly important as much as adjectives for describing a person/personality etc. still insecure about speaking, despite any compliments on my pronunciation, but i'm really making progress starting to speak on calls with my friends, which took me ages to get comfortable with. and of course speaking in korean class (my uni major) is helping a lot !! anyway this was just a personal ramble i don't expect anyone to read lmao

Did you look up all the new words? I would love to learn Korean trough reading and stuff but I feel like I need a basic level for it (despite Hangeul of course) I learned English through KZbin and books but I also had classes in school so already new the basics..

@@eli_plum yes, i literally searched up and wrote down EVERY unknown word i saw, saving it in my phone notes so i can find it whenever it’s on the tip of my tongue, it’s a great method for long-term memory reinforcement !!

how did you learn it so well through books and webtoons? I studied level 3 and 4 this year in a Korean university so I have quite a good base but I have so much trouble going through novels. Tbh, I'm getting into the whole "-은/는" and "이/가" thing at the moment. It hasn't seemed to be too challenging so far, but it's adding an entirely new dynamic to interpreting sentences. It can take a simple sentence, "Today the weather is nice.", and turn it into "At least the weather is nice TODAY (as opposed to every other day)", or "At least THE WEATHER is nice today (as opposed to literally everything else)". And honestly, I'm feeling like that's going to be a lot to consider, as it seems like the next chapter is going to build off of this. I have no idea what to expect in chapter 10 of TTIK.

Guys don't worry too much about it :) I have used the TTMIK books as well and I absolutely love them. You don't have to force yourself and try too hard to understand it. With time and exposure to the korean language, it will just come to you naturally. ^^

I also want do add that lessons in the TTMIK book aren't necessarily become harder and harder in each level. There are just some Grammar structures that are important and basic but are hard to grasp for beginners. There will always be lessons that will seem easier, or harder, no matter what level you are at! So don't worry about what is yet to come, 화이팅! You can do it♡

I attended 3 months intensive Korean language course level 2/6 in a Korean University and was able to improve my language level much faster than studying just independently at home. Maybe it was the teacher, environment or even motivation but it was the best decision and was lucky to have the opportunity to visit Korea. I even made Korea Vlog with the time I spent there. Definitely, I recommend to learn the language in that country if possible 😊

this might be a too-academic approach, but as for pronunciation/accent, i think general knowledge of phonetics and the International Phonetic Alphabet (and mapping that to 한글) is IMMENSELY helpful. It also helped me figure out where the sound gaps are between english (native language) and korean

I have a tip for those who are kind of stuck in the intermediate level, watch korean variety shows! Korea have variety shows for so many topics so I'm almost totally sure you can find something you'd like to watch, I started to feel a bit tired to study textbooks and stuff, so I just went to entertain myself with koreans shows that I really like, and it was SO beneficial, I learned so many words and phrases and grammar patterns, the variety shows where they show people's daily life's are the best for, but you can watch anything you'd like, and it really doesn't feel like you're studying at all, my first one was The Return of the Superman, a classic! Bit again just try to find something you like and enjoy!

I remember watching her videos on Korean saying she got comfortable in 2.5 years. "oh so i can do the same?" I thought. No. I couldn't. 5 years in and my speaking level is still very low because I didn't practice a enough. I got very discouraged in the process. I just started to practice a little more and overcome my speaking "anxiety". I'm writing this to let anyone know who didn't "get fluent and/or comfortable in 2 years", YOU WILL GET THERE. YOU DIDN'T WASTE YOUR TIME. You have a lot information stored in your brain that needs to be activated. When you're going to practice is obviously your choice but I promise you that you can do it.

I have a question that sort of came to me as I was watching. I think this was something that held me back from a variety of situations early on during my time in Japan, and I really notice it holding me back here in Korea now, so I'd be curious to hear how you deal with it: How do you approach speaking with superiors or people older than you when you are still a beginner. It feels like the stakes are so much higher when you make a mistake because you risk just sounding so rude at a slip of the tongue. I find myself just trying to end those interactions as quickly as possible, waiting and hoping that after my more casual speaking skills are more fluid, I might be able to tackle those more delicate kinds of conversation. But it seems like a cop-out... idk. What are your thoughts? 👀

I second this question, and also worry people will laugh at me for being too formal. I've even encountered the problem in French by using the "vous" form when it was apparently inappropriate. There are just so many nuances to formality and honorifics make it that much harder. I don't feel that aware of my own social status.

I've started learning Korean when I was in 4th grade of elementary school (9/10 years) and now I'm 20-freaking-5 and I feel like I haven't really accomplished a lot. XD My advice is, don't ever let yourself be lazy. It's perfectly okay to take a break when it's needed, but learning a language is a process and therefore, it has to be consistent. My problem is that I'm stuck. Textbooks are totally not my thing and going through them is just so painfully boring to me. I can't even accurately establish where I'm at. Sometimes I'll understand about 68% of a song or an article, but my knowledge is so lacking. I know there are some things you just can't skip, like you have to build a solid base when it comes to a lot of things, especially grammar. Korean grammar is so precise, there are a lot of constructions that require you to twist your way of thinking. Some words/patterns can only be used in a specific context. And then there are fixed expressions that require you to stop trying to think WHY IT'S SAID LIKE THIS because it's just is.

Great video! I always enjoyed Spongemind videos. I actually just competed his language camp which was the motivation I needed to finally stop hanging around at beginner level. Now Inhave a good routine and can solidly say I am intermediate! I am going in a year I can reach upper intermediate. Maybe even advanced. I feel more motivated after breaking out of beginner. I used to say I would never learn hanja but now I bought a hanja book because I am motivated to learn more vocab. I've picked up some of this naturally like 학 and other base words to guess. And one day I want to learn Japanese so I figure it'll help with kanji too.

@@melodywilson Like understanding the pronunciation? I always think of the ㅇ character as a place holder, so if it is at the top, and there's a batchim before I can move that final sound into the placeholder. And if the place holder isn't there, then the sound is stopped or half-said. Hard to explain in typing. But overall, the more that you listen, especially with a transcript so you can see the words as they are being said, eventually it will make sense. It can be helpful too if you've studied awhile to read to someone and have them correct any pronunciation issues.

This was so informative. I am basic 2- intermediate 1 level in Korean and agree with everything you said. Korean is harder than i though. The script is so easy that it almost made me believe language is going to be easier. But is it not. I do take breaks so it is taking me longer to get to upper intermediate level than i thought. great. i am Korean and i do speak a little bit of Japanese as well. it seems you're speaking Korean quite well. i'm making Korean cartoon 4 cut everyday basically. and it deals some of differences between Korean and Japanese as well. it must be helpful for you i guess. there are lots of differences between Korean and Japanese, though the sounding and the root of the words are so similar or the same.

@@nicoleraheem1195 Thank you! :D I was actually gonna start using Korean Grammar in Use bc i downloaded it a while ago and even Lindie recommends that book so i thought "Why not?"

@@andreajimed89 I have the same book and I agree. I am still an absolute beginner.😂 I have no chances of passing TOPIK1 at this moment, however, I find that Korean grammar in use is easier to use once you have a few beginner textbooks under your belt

@@andreajimed89 Also, I started learning korean in april 2020. Jumping from one resource to another is not good.😂 I spent most of my time learning what not to do to learn how to learn😢 Now I complete textbooks and I wish it was something I had done sooner😢❤

I'm learning orean at my age of 34 and I feel a bit frustrated because i'm learning by my own and watching videos and learning from books, I know a lot of things but when i have to talk about something in that moment improvised. I'm completely blocked.
