Your a bad man, what's in a name! Shuggies/Hummies, small Humongous patterns, have to be my lure during the year in both black or white. Early season grizzle cat again if I'm fishing lure. Dial Backs most of the year.

hi Lindsay Just to let you know the Humugus was first tyed by a friend of mine from the Lochgelly fly fishing club many many moons ago. I was first given it to me by my name sake dusty miller and mister loch Leven fisher supreme Mr. Chalmers . I was only a wee laddie at the time but do indeed remember the days of hi d lines and big old fly's for them hard fighting loch Leven brownies ,had a lot over the years and it is safe to say that the good old days of hard fighting brownies is well on its way back at Loch Leven , Interesting video my friend I do like the humungus over many newer patterns ,for me it is the go to fly when times are getting hard ,anyways take care and have fun always

The devil made me do it! Ha! I saw Garths video for the black mamba and thought to myself it's just a black zonker fly with some peacock green glister! What's the big deal Garth! Your black mamba zonker is just a zonker! The humongous or shuggy fly is one the the first flies I learned to tie and I have more confidence in as a fish catcher. Perhaps the Mamba police figured out that it's really just a zonker after all! 😎😎

When folk talk about the black mamba I have to point out that fly was going around Ayrshire in the early 90s except it was a litebrite body and hand painted bead because glister wasn't out yet and you had to paint your own beds at the time- I doubt most folk could tell the difference between the dressings. The Shuggie is probably a more consistent fish catcher, but as you say Lindsay confidence is a big part of things. It catches plenty because it's on the leader often. Cheers

If you look at the title of this video out of context & not knowing about fly fishing, it sounds like an animated monster movie! =} Give my prejudices against zonker style flies, I’m not at all surprised by the outcome of your test. Unless the zonker fur strip used is very thin, soft & supple, I don’t feel it can produce the fish-like action of marabou, streamer hackle orfur not attached to the hide. You do make a great point about a fly’s effectiveness being related to the fly fishers confidence in it, & I admit that my lack of success with zonkers may be the cause of my failures. Thanks for posting this test. It’s a great idea, & I hope you will do more. Be well & tight lines. - Bob

I find that humongous an excellent searching pattern on anything from a floating line to a Di 7 or 8 . I tie them in many colours and sizes. Black and silver or gold and,white and silver or gold work really well. The sizes vary from a size 10 to tandem of around 3 or 4 inches in length. All work very well. Tight lines.

@@lindsayiflyfish hi, they work well in early season and the back end. Especially for large brownies deep down and fry feeders. I have experimented with humongous tied as snakes. Mini as 2 inch single hook, 3 and 4 inch as tandem hooks rigs. They worked very well at Clywedog when fished deep and slow. You need the extra hook as big brownies seem to attack the head end. Tight lines..

Thank you for the mention. Some friendly advice, try to get the takes in the video. Every modern camera is more than capable of recording in 30-minute segments. If you aren't moving up and down the bank, there's no reason not to get the takes and will make for a more interesting video. I would also recommend trying my version and am happy to send you some. As I have tested the slight variations and spent time getting the perfect fly. I know it may not seem like it, but changing it often reduces its catch rate. Keep up the good work and hopefully see you on the bank one day.

I think the main message in this video is correct however the information is not correct. It is not a black mamba so isn't a true reflection. It's a zonka veriant. I'm no expert at all so its just my opinion and we all now what opinions are good for lol. I was blown away by the results on the mamba and I prefer naturals. I tied the mamba with very slight variations and didn't produce the same results as the original, so I now belive there is something in these slight differences. But then each fly has its day no matter which one it is. For some reason the mamba catches alot of spastics, tigers and browns, try and explain that one because I have no clue.
@lindsayiflyfish

Thanks Tim, I am glad the point came across. I have been fishing a long time though and what I am completely convinced of is that depth, profile and speed or retrieve are much more important than the pattern itself.

You seem to have ruffled a few feathers again. You put the 'Black Mamba' against a fly that many top internationals believe is the best lure ever created. I mean they are complaining that the 'Black Mamba' wasn't tied right... the Shuggie has well over 1000 variations with every fly tier trying to convince you that their variation is the best. I've said it in the past that the 'Black Mamba' has its targeting points all wrong and was such a tail nipper that it has went into the fly box where flies to to die. Don't listen to some of the criticism about the takes or production either. You offer something different - akin to talking to an old head on your way around the water fishing. If I wanted to see high quality production and a lot of fish getting taken then there is Rhys and Tim for that. You offer stories and knowledge that a lot of people don't - so don't change. I watch your fly tying videos just to hear the stories despite the fact I already know how to tie the fly.

Doesn't have to be constant. If this video was 1 - 0 to the humungous, but you had the take and landing on camera, it would have been a much better video. I think you can't handle criticism. If you listened your channel would improve. Just my opinion and you dont have to accept it, but maybe ask some close friends because everyone I fish with wants to see the take.

@@GarethWilson2k9 Fair enough, I do listen to my audience and many have asked that I show what I am doing and that was much more interesting than catching fish. I am not in the habit of making up stories about how many fish I have caught. I have nothing to prove, I did all that years ago. Now I want to help anglers by sharing that experience but I also want to have a bit of fun with it. If it's not your bag or you think I am making it up don't watch its no problem.
