The next interview was held by someone completely unknown to me, who said the last person has left the company to pursue other options. The new guy told me i didn’t have enough experience and hired his mate. Who as it turns out, had no experience.

If you were like the 7th or 8th or 9th most successful painter in the world, your works would sell for hundreds of millions of dollars or euros or whatever. If you were the 13th most successful politician in the world, you would literally be the 13th most powerful person on the planet! In other words, I think this is deal worth taking.

The only craft I've truly ever loved in life is writing stories. In high school I was doing a lot of research on global poverty, decided from a dozen or so different groups that it would cost around $60 to take someone in 'desperate poverty' and put them in an upwards spiral, at about 2b people in desperate poverty that equaled 120bn if not squandered on politics. Harry Potter had 7 novels and the franchise was worth around 28b so I figured I owed the world 30 of the greatest novels. Obviously this is a broad strokes plan, I knew it then and I have learned a lot more since then about macro economics/ geopolitics etc. The point is that if I live a 'normal' life and do what charity I can maybe I help 10,000 people. If I have a 1/10,000 chance to end up helping 100m people then that sounds like the more braver/ honorable thing to do. If I'd become a soldier and gotten my leg blown off trying to save 10 people with a desperate plan that only had a 5% chance of ever working then I would be considered a hero. If I spend a decade on 50-60 partially completed novels that all interconnect into a Wheel of Time scale story then I'm just a lazy fool.

'Would you devote yourself to an occupation if you knew you would be among the most successful in the world?' Er, yeah; that's the ideal with most professions, you're not aspiring to be _good enough_ at a thing, even though that's probably where you'll end up. You try to go as far as you can possibly go, and that means aspiring to the absolute best in field. 'If you knew you only had a 10% chance of being so successful, would you still put in the effort?' Again, yes. That's still just having a professional career, and entering into that career with realistic expectations. You can always _aspire_ to be the best, but you can only _plan_ to do as well as you could expect to without any good fortune or talent; good fortune cannot be planned for, and _talent_ is something that is almost impossible to self-assess, especially before it's been tested (and once it has been tested, you're well past the planning stage).
@LordJazzly5 ай бұрын
(And before someone pulls out the 'you can make your own luck' spiel - yes, yes, alright; for 'good fortune' read 'not having all your efforts arbitrarily and pointlessly destroyed and/or undone by factors completely outside your knowledge and totally beyond your control'. Even calculated risks still carry some risk, and sometimes things pan out such that the risks all happen to eventuate, and the benefits you were weighing against them come undone by that combination of misfortunes. Arguably this can still be planned for, but planning also carries costs of its own and at some point such risk mitigation becomes more expensive than the risk itself.)

You're still just as good (or terrible) as you are right now, only everyone loves you and rates you as one of the best in your field, ever; effectively bringing the skill ceiling of your entire chosen field down to your own present level. Which is an altogether different question - do you want success in your chosen field _so_ badly that you're willing to tear it down, until it's been reduced to the point that you can reach the top with no effort?
