I have had a lot of requests to do a video on how I would dial in the new Placater Dirty Helix model which is based off of the Friedman BE100 amplifier. Here is what I came up with after messing around with it. Hope you all enjoy and please feel free to subscribe to my channel if you are so inclined :-)

Wow, just downloaded this preset, it might be the best sounding all purpose rock preset on my Helix. Thanks so much Jason for these great videos and making them available for everyone.

wilsonabel I have the smallbox limited and I think I’m repeating again but I thought I’d love it out of the box but I need to tweak it. It’s good but I need it to be with our guitar ears perfect. Lol. I think I missed something in this amp model. Again, I’m new to the Helix. The different options that are on the back of the real amp. Need to look again but it’s 1am which tends to be when I want to play the most but wife and apt living. 🌙

that is so encouraging as I don't have 4k for a Friedman BE-100 or the place to crank a 100 watt amp and my HX Stomp does the job.

Read through the manual for the BE 100, it's only a page or two. Between drive/saturation/BE a HUGE amount of ground can be covered. One thing I love about Placater is the way it cleans up with my volume knob. Yes, it'll saturate to creamy goodness, but it also gets such a nice mid sparkle-drive when rolled back. This and the Lonestar really are the first models that feel like amps under my fingers. Would like to hear what you dial in for a nice higher-gain tone with delay and verb and how it would sit in a mix. Maybe you've done that already? You're so prolific with videos I can't keep up! :) Cheers!

Great video as always. I really appreciate your walk throughs. I messed with this model last night to work on an Alice In Chains preset since he apparently has been using a custom Friedman. So many amp models to use, so little time. I need to go through each amp to get an ideal EQ/setup on each and save as templates.

Thank you for these and the time you take to do them as well as freely sharing your skills. As a new Helix owner and getting the knack of preset building and tweaking your videos have become an essential training tool. Little things like the crossover split and the mic selection, placement and distance are things I would not have applied as quickly as I already have. Could you speak sometime to cab/IR level setting and if that has any actual tone implications or just another gain/balancing stage?
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the kind words and so happy that the videos are helping you out :-) The cab/IR level won't have any sonic implications. It could be used to balance the volume between cabs when using 2 cabs but other than that it would be more for adding or subtracting gain. Hope that helps!

As always great video Jason. I just wonder whether I'll ever enjoy messing about with crossover blocks and post amp EQ to achieve the tone of the built in amp block. Why does Line 6 not compensate for some of this within the amp/cab pairing to better simulate the real amp? Maybe a video on this particular issue is in order; perhaps you could help us understand the thinking behind having inbuilt amps and cabs that are supposed to model the real thing and yet need quite a high degree on EQ, volume compensation and compression to sound authentic....

Jason, if u ever get a chance to try a smallbox limited. Not the regular, must be the limited. I think you will really like it. It’s not bassy. Has extra gain. It really is my favorite and best amp. Worked and saved for years traded up from really cheap bad gear over the years and finally got it in off white. Wildwood Guitars here in the U.S spec’d it out. It’s great. FYI I’m Using the Doug Aldrich zebra pups in my guitar. Really like them after spending my whole life using stock Seymour Duncan alnico 2s and JB’s. And SD got his start in the town I grew up in at the now gone music center. Got my first real guitar there many yrs later. A fender American Standard Strat. Read it in guitar player mag yrs after I bought the guitar. I’m in a major city now and let me count the guitar stores we have left here. Zero.

Hey Jason....I have had my Helix for just over a week now...its been a bumpy ride, but thanks to your videos,I have been able to get some great sounds...The routing is throwing me for a bit of a loop.. I have a question....I am using my Helix Rack thru a pair of Yamaha HS7's...I want to do a wet/dry/wet configuration....If I bought a 3rd monitor for the dry center channel, would this work??Do you think it would sound good??I have seen people use a real amp for the Dry channel, but was wondering if it could be done with a 3rd powered monitor with the same results??I don't currently have a real amp(bought the Helix instead)...so I was just wondering what your thoughts were on how to accomplish this, and how it would sound??Thanks again for your videos....I swear I would have sent this thing back if it wasn't for you....

Hey Scott, thanks for the comment and so glad the videos have been helping :-) I actually did an interview on a KZbin show called The Helix Hour about a month ago and I created a W/D/W patch for the show that is available for download here: bit.ly/2uD0lBh . There are two patches here one is meant to be used with a real amp but the other is all within the Helix like what you described above. Hope that helps :-)

I'm new-ish to the Helix. Where do you normally have your big Helix volume knob set? I normally have it around 1 o'clock. Is this more of a set it and forget it volume adjustment, then use the software to adjust volume? Thanks for the help!

Hey Jason, when you checked the meter at the start of the video and boosted the output block, can you elaborate more on what you were doing here? Awesome videos, keep it up! 🤘🏻
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much :-) I am running the Helix into my DAW (Cubase 9.5 Pro) which has input meters. So I was using the output block of the Helix to boost the volume up to a more usable level into Cubase as it seemed a little quiet to me. Hope that made sense :-)

Could that Y crossover split be used at the beginning of bottom path so that one could blend 2 cabs or irs ? Or does it have to be right after the cab on the top path? Thanks again for another insightful video .
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 6 жыл бұрын
My pleasure and thanks for watching :-) I don't see why that wouldn't work off the top of my head. Set your output block on Path 1 to Path 2a and it should be fine. I guess when using stock cabs you could also use a dual cab block into the split x-over also.

I own and gig a BE50 dlx as well and a Runt 50...neither is "dark" in any way that I would describe an amp to be. Just curious, what cab and speakers do you use with your BE50? What settings do you typically run?

Would someone mind explaining how the split/crossover with the gain blocks is different than just adding a simple lo/hi shelf eq block?
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites Жыл бұрын
It is the same thing. When this video was released, there was no lo/hi shelf eq in the Helix. The reason the lo/hi shelf eq was added by Line 6 is because of the video I did about using the split path in this manner to turn it into a lo/hi shelf eq. There is no point in using this technique any longer now that the lo/hi shelf has been added. Hope that helps 😀

I am not a big IR user personally as the stock cabs do everything I need them to. Also, my goal with this Dialing In... series is to not use any 3rd party IRs to get the tones. Thanks for listening and the suggestion though :-)

Maybe you can help me. I'm a new helix owner and am having a hard time getting decent tones out of it. I'm using jbl slr305s through xlr. Just about every patch I download or build manages to sound dark and thuddy and harsh at the same time. The only good tones I've managed to get so far are with a plexi bright or a panama with a rat in front on mild settings. The rat tightens up the gain and makes it come alive and sound just like I'm sitting in front of a tube combo. Even though this has worked an amp like the panama shouldn't need a pedal to make it come alive. I feel like there must be some global setting or something I'm missing, but it's been a chore so far to coax good sounds out of it. All the clips I hear sound nothing like my helix. I just tried your be100 patch and it sounds dark and thuddy with no sizzle. Wish I could figure out what i'm doing wrong.

Hi Ed, I would love to try and help out! Could you l ask what your global settings are for your XLR outs on your Helix? It should be set to "Line" if you are plugging directly into your studio monitors. Take a look there first and let me know.
