I've watched a second time. It's actually a shame. This is such a fantastic bit of rig and the effect models are so authentic sounding - but this was 80% jumbled crosstalk, 15% gimmicky sounds, and 5% showing people how good the unit really sounds.

Kudos to Line 6 for making products that allow musicians all the tools they could possibly want at an affordable price. The Helix LT is absolutely amazing and I'm sure this product is as well. Sure, these contraptions are only what-400-600 bucks or so- depending on which one you get- but it's not like you can just buy one and start playing- now you need a cab or some FRFR speakers- which cost as much as these units almost. I think the cheapest I've found is around 200 bucks or so- and it would suck to use because you're not going to get what the unit is really capable of until you spend some real money. But let's say you just spend 200- now you're in for around 700-800 bucks, you can buy a really nice tube amp for the same amount. Bedsides- you're going to keep buying pedals anyway- I have yet to see any pedal lover buy one of these and stop buying pedals- just doesn't happen. They buy this- and they keep buying pedals because they want to be part of that community and keep experiencing all the new stuff that comes out. Most of them end up with one of these, and a big pedal board and amp- now they have 2 rigs. It doesn't save money- it should, but it doesn't.

Me to- I want to hear a bass E power cord, just let it ring out- because imo that's the hardest thing for digital to get right. No idea why but I've played lots of digital overdrives and dist. that sound great- until you hit that open, E, power cord- or really any big powerful power cord on the low E string- it's like it's too much information for it to handle or something- sounds weird, grainy, sometimes fizzy. Not always- I've heard digital units that get it right, and it's not always the unit either- speakers play a big part to. The wrong speaker will sound grainy, fizzy- odd. The Katana has this issue- and when they (Capt. and Pete) took the speaker out of a Katana and put it in Fender amps- they sounded that way to. Then they put the Celestion back in- it went away. The Celestion speakers are far better at handling gain.

Hey Captain, I know that the loops can be used to use your own distortion boxes, or preamps or amps patched in, and that you can use the Helix to switch channels on an amp as part of a patch change. But unfortunately, much like every other review on the Helix FX, no one has demonstrated that functionality of it as part of a real world scenario that a gigging guitarist can use, it’s always sounds washed out with to much effects, that honestly very few guitarist will use. Pleeease show us a setup with an amp , or a good boutique style distortion box like a Bogner Red or Blue, which can accept external footswitches, or both patched in, and do some real world channel switching. Do like a clean, rhythm lead set up with a nice simple clean sound , and a slightly chores,echoing clean tone, a nice in your face dirty rhythm that has just slight reverb, and a nice blooming lead tone with delay and reverb. Get someone like Rabea to demonstrate it , I find he has abilities that cover a wide range of musical styles very nicely, and have him switch around different setups that working musician would encounter, at a metal club gig, a rock and blues show or even a wedding gig. That would be really helpful instead of listening to a sound drowning in reverb, echo and chorus.
@gmofftarki6 жыл бұрын
I like that it can be attached to not one but two expression pedals, so you can have volume+wah or whatever combination of two pedal effects you happen to want. Nice touch.
@59LesPaul6 жыл бұрын
To demonstrate the ease and simplicity of programming effects for your average cover band guitar player, a very good demo would be to get a list of recognizable songs with very unique effects, learn a small part of the songs that the effects are highlighted on and have your Helix rep dial in that effect on the spot without knowing the songs... then play the passage to compare to the actual recording... as a top 40 player myself, it'd be interesting to see how quickly a rep could simulate the effect on the fly...

I got a Firehawk to complement my Variax. At first I thought it's sounds were a little clinical "That digital Something Missing feeling", but run through a valve amp set to clean or light break up, it's tones started to make more sense. I've never been an anti this, anti that type of guy. I'm more; if it works use it. But the budget Firehawk really impresses me now. Didn't have the readies to splash out on Helix at the time but I could use those extra assignable Send/returns nowadays. Forget 2 wire/4 wire. I'm running 7 wire. No mean feat with only one FX Loop on the Firehawk. If I were to upgrade Line6'wise I'd still probably go full Helix but I can see the HX appealing to some as a specific solution.

im not that much excited xd....i see this technology as a poberty solution 😭😭😭, and to make easy some things......i have a Boss Katana 100 Combo and i was blown away by the ammount of versatility and tones available...its scary cuz you move a parameter a little bit and boom...new tone...i think distorsions can improve (the brown channel is very good, but i think that maybe pinch harmonic reaction can be better) but i really really really REALLY want to buy a Marshall DSL100HR and a Boss ES8 and make that analog/digital marriage, im happy about what technology can give us, but my complain is that is very difficult to find a very good and useful digital overdrive/distorsion...i was very scared that i wont like the Katana metal tones...but i still dialing to find the sweet spot, and for the moment, im satisfied with the brown channel+turbo OD and the parametric EQ (that i still have to learn to use)

Looks great for use with the presets / snapshots mode although it would be much better if it could somehow display 6 snapshots rather than just 4 which is quite limiting if using for various song sections. Having the bank up and bank down buttons constantly visible during a song performance seems a waste of two switches, it would be great to have a mode where the bank buttons only appear when you press the mode button for instance. Maybe something for an update?
@dwcramer926 жыл бұрын
Paul Joy I'm assuming its a memory/processing power issue, the larger helix models have 2 dsp chips for fx and such, and the hx fx only has one, hence half the features, half the active fx, half the snapshots, no amp modeling. I do agree that 6 would make more sense though Edit:added im assuming since i dont know this 100%
@PaulJoy6 жыл бұрын
Hi David. Would more snapshots really require additional processing though? I would assume a snapshot is more of recall of configuration data than a drain on the DSP.
@dwcramer926 жыл бұрын
Im not 100% sure, mostly an assumpion since everything else is halved, i feel like if it was possible they would have made it an option from the start, everything else that is possible is an option, and it would be very dumb if it was possible and they didnt do it, but then again, i don't work for Line 6, I'm just some guy lol.
@PaulJoy6 жыл бұрын
Who knows. It would be interesting to know how the snapshots are navigated when pressing bank up and down, I'm assuming it will just load the snapshots from the next preset. I agree with the Captain though, it could really do with a display showing which preset is currently loaded.
@dwcramer926 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree a display would be nice, but i also understand that they cut that and an expression Pedal to make it more affordable, i have the Helix LT i feel it is a great middleground between the hx effects and main helix

The effects are great but if you are thinking about buying it I would say that the Amps and Cabs on the Helix Floor are worth buying that instead because they are great. The best distortion sounds are from overdriving the modeled amps in my opinion so there's an important part of Helix missing from this in my opinion - but if you do simply want the effects, then this is a great choice.

Paul, I'm trying to find where there is a list (if indeed a list exists) of bass specific effects and also if there is a list of amps and cabs on the LX. Can you point us in the right direction if such a thing exists - also, it would be great for Lee & Nathan to do an AATB episode looking at the Helix from a bass perspective. Thank you. Finally, I thought this was an excellent video. Whilst some people are commenting on too much chat, I think when it is a piece of gear that has so much functionality to it, this level of chat is totally appropriate and (for me at least) really useful and educational. If the bass functionality is as good at the guitar one is then I'm sold on the LX so thanks for the video as well.

I hope they make Helix Amps.. Wherein you get smaller form factor, like a single stomp box with their amp modeling capabilities only.. I think that will be a great solution for all the stompbox guys where they get the option of not bringing the amp with them and go straight to PA using their beloved effects. What do you guys think? Personally, I would prefer getting the full ranged Helix or LT, so I could setup everything beforehand. Having the option to build a rig again with this idea, that will be awesome! It saves you a lot of time settling for different amps (from good to cheap ones to literally NONE!) on gig venues.

I would love to see a shootout between this and the fractal audio ax8 (which I have and love). One of the things I come to love about Andertons is their non biased blindfold tests. Give us a blindfold test if the ax8 vs the helix. That would be awesome.
@WiliamShattner6 жыл бұрын
I don't think they sell Fractal. They only demo stuff they sell. :(
@mattymatmatmat9776 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would be feasible to do a blindfold test on this kind of product just because of how many parameters there are to alter. Eg you own an axe fx they test it against the helix and prefer the helix, you would quite rightly argue that you could easily dial that tone in on the fractal. I think with this kind of stuff it does come down to the user knowing how to get the most from the gear; which in turn comes down to experience. Not trying to be a dick I just think the comments section on that video would be ablaze with people criticising the patches they'd created.

I think Lee really likes Paul as a player and a person, not so sure he is that keen on digi effects in general. that's just not the way he plays. The ultimate board for Lee would convince him he was just playing some top notch overdrive etc into his trusty Blues Junior and then he would say "Well I already have that". Not a criticism I love the Captain maybe Pete gets it more because he can see a use for it. Anyway looking forward to next years voice activated "HeyHelix" unit.

Is it likely that they will release an amp model box so that between the HX Effects and the Amp model box you have a full Helix? I can see that at home/practice/studio the pair together would be great but the HX Effects only for gigging, playing live in to your amp........

Great advert for the King of Tone! No one is any the wiser after nearly an hour if the Helix sounds any good.

I am still a total amateur, barely still learning to play guitar, and i want to get a decent electric guitar soon, but instead of an endless search for amps, would it be possible or even reasonable to get something like this line6 helix and plug it straight into a cab and still be able to play normally?

Enzo Sisneros yes, just turn off the cab sim in the pedal if you are using an actual cab. Alternatively keep the cab sim on and play through headphones or studio monitors.

Catherine Faulkner oh so it could also function through stereo speakers and so?

Not straight into a cab, no. You need something with power, so you could go into the front end of an amp or a PA.

No, you need a powered amp of some kind, this is just for effects processing and amp simulation. You could run it into a PA, or an audio interface, but it won't power a cab

Amp modeling has come a long way. It is completely feasible to use a multi-effects / amp modeling board rather than a real tube amp with a bunch of individual pedals. As others have mentioned though, you will need either a powered floor speaker or something similar if you wish to hear yourself.

I'll say the dirt models seem useful as opposed the the HD models which were unusable in any scenario. Looking foward to a used hs stomp
