I am a VA provider who found this correlation and began to screen all my Veterans for OSA prior to "just giving medication" it has made a great difference. I have had great success in response to OSA and PTSD. I have also perfected my Nexus letter I provide when a service member request documentation. Keep up the good work!!!

Complex PTSD is a thing too. It is about traumas, sometimes less violent, over a longer time. People that have had traumatic childhoods more often fall into this type.

shared this one with my wife. She is also a Marine and a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at our VA clinic. She constantly lectures veterans with PTSD about CPAP. And she can make the connection between the two as a diagnosis. Thanks Jason.

Afghanistan and Iraq veteran with ptsd and Obstruction Sleep Apnea. My OSA therapy has been the number one FIX for PTSD Type Nightmares thus not throwing punches at my bedmate. Also used ASG Diagnostics with Jason to tweaking my CPAP to best it can be. I share this linkage with all my veteran friends and they too report overall DAMN BETTER HEALTH. Feel free to pin this comment to the top. Blessings my fellow CPAP and PTSD patients this is a POWERFUL combination to fast relief and recovery with Rx. ❤

I'm 70% rated for PTSD from the military and was diagnosed with sleep apnea last year. It makes sense to me. My sleep test showed 156 arousals and I only slept 4 hours a night average. I'm also diagnosed with depression. Getting my sleep issues addressed and watching this channel, helps a ton! When I sleep well, I can address the other mental health challenges. You hit one thing on the nail- I hated using my mask because it made me feel very vulnerable to anyone breaking in my house. As far as the VA goes, submit an intent to file and it gives you a year to gather the evidence for your claim. I need to look into this myself.

Interesting, I have PTSD and anxiety (not from military) I’ve only been on cpap for 2 months. Just yesterday I told my spouse that I have just noticed the past few days that those symptoms are much less. I only have mild sleep apnea and with the cpap I am still waking up 6-12 times a night. Hoping someday that will change😊

Thank you Jason for bring such a sensitive subject to light and showing the correlation between OSA and PTSD. Retired with 30 years of service as a LEO. Diagnosed with PTSD in in 05'. Through therapy and medication I was able to still do the job and complete a successful career. I still attend therapy sessions and take meds. Started CPAP therapy for OSA in 2020. I never put PTSD and OSA together but, upon starting and sticking with CPAP therapy it has made a positive change both mentally and physically. I ignored the symptoms. Big mistake. Took me along time to realize that PTSD is nothing to be ashamed of. Get help and fight those demons.

I never had sleep issues until my traumatic event. Literally lines up perfectly. Ever since then my sleep has been a shadow of what it used to be. CPAP has helped me get nearly back to where I was.

Another great video.I'm sure it will be helpful to people. I’m a clinical psychologist who has worked with PTSD in many including combat vets, rape victims, crash victims, and more. And… I’ve had disabling PTSD twice, once after a knife attack/robbery years ago and once having been struck and dragged by an 18-wheel truck while driving on the freeway. (Never mind traumatic stuff from childhood, lol). It's treatable! For OSA patients who tolerate PAP therapy, optimal PAP therapy is a great help for most PTSD symptoms and for things that sometimes are related to PTSD, like chronic pain and depression. Conversely, and just as important, is that OSA can CAUSE symptoms and problem behaviors that LOOK like PTSD, attention deficits, hyperactivity, and more. Clinicians and patients should not assume that all sleep-related symptoms are consequences of PTSD or medication but should instead be aware of the potential for coexisting OSA that requires treatment. I’ve seen what I thought was PTSD resolve or lessen once people get PAP therapy. One of my biggest pet peeves with MDs and clinical colleagues? …Missing the diagnosis or incorrectly diagnosing something followed by medication (for the wrong diagnosis). It's inevitable that that will happen, but sometimesbit's avoidable. Krakow wrote a whole book about these things (which I’d consult if I wasn’t away from home) and Matteson wrote about these issues in "Missing the Diagnosis: The Hidden Medical Causes of Mental Disorders." Oh, and while I'm here (putting my license on the line, lol), let me say that there are therapies that help many that often don't include or require medication, such as virtual reality therapies, prolonged exposure therapies, and social learning therapies. If you'd like to avoid getting on or staying on problematic pharmacology, these other paths might be for you.

Jason, we must be having a telepathic connection. Just two days ago I came to the conclusion that everything that still ails me these days perfectly fits the description of CPTSD. Suffering from UARS from age ~11 to 29 would do that for anyone I guess. I was aware of the research describing the connection (Krakow) between existing PTSD and SDB onset, but there is also existing SDB causing onset of (C)PTSD because people who have it will likely live with it for quite a long time before diagnosis and treatment (if ever). Living like that is living in dire straits for a loooong time.

I have cptsd not service related. I got a sleep study for chronic insomnia. For years I'd be awake until dawn before i could fall asleep for 3-4 hrs. When i started cpap, i started sleeping at night again and woke up much less frequently. I still have bad nights weekly but overall im getting much more reliable, sustained sleep on average at night. I'd give my first born for a full 8 hr sleep a couple nights a week but I'll take what i can get. Someday, maybe, I'll get there.

I’m a retired vet and am service connected for major depressive disorder. (Probably should be for PTSD, but the VA focused on depression for some reason) I also have sleep apnea (which I feel is linked) but mine is mostly central apneas. The VA has me on a bipap currently but I don’t feel it is really helping anything, either my depression or my sleep. Do you have any suggestions?

Non professional here. Good vid. With trauma being the common link, I assume this would also apply to complex grief, and it wouldn't be surprising if there's a higher incidence of osa within the Autistic community as well ( many autistic people describe their life as like being born into an alien world where most people think really weirdly). I think that if you are or have anything that consistently disturbs your sleep, then there is probably a higher risk of being prone to osa.
