Great Video! It definitely is much more metaphorical in Skyward Sword but in older games like Wind Waker where there's literal pieces we have to collect it definitely is less so.

I've always felt the story of the Triforce was really compelling. This metaphorical concept of human ability, translated into a more literal concept of a Magic Artifact. When the spirit of the Hero is lost in the Adult Timeline, and Wind Waker Link earns the power of the Triforce through his own efforts, instead of being destined for it, that always really resonated with me.

Excellent video! The Triforce in the Silent Realms water even reflects Link’s perspective (because it’s inside of him). You’ll notice that the Triforce of Courage is on the left side of the Triforce instead of the right side when he looks into the Silent Realms waters.

I have spent a lot of time over my life contemplating the philosophical aspects of the Triforce, and I am thrilled to hear that I'm not alone in that rumination. Link's story is profound because it tells us you don't need to know what your doing(wisdom) or have all the tools you need (power) when you start on a journey, you just need to have the courage to start and you'll find those things along the way. I love what they did with Zelda's story arc in BotW because they actually gave her character development rooted in the Triforce. She starts with wisdom, but no power or courage. She knows from the outset what she's supposed to do in her life, unlock her sealing power. But she struggles to connect with that power, and is afraid she won't succeed.

If you haven’t already seen it, I highly highly recommend checking out MonsterMaze. He made a video called The Mystery of the Triforce in Breath of the Wild and he has another very good theory about this exact bit of story in Skyward Sword His thinking was that Link was carrying the Triforce in his body or blood, but needed to forge his spirit to be able to actually access it, as opposed to Link creating it. You guys both did great :) I like both takes on this idea

I feel like this one deserves a follow up video. Basically, going off of this logic, what does that say about the various Links who either have only 1 piece of the Triforce or none at all? Or what about the times when Ganondorf has the whole Triforce? Is it that Wisdom, Courage, & Power are neutral traits and so could be obtained by either good or evil?

It depends. I do think the interpretation I give in this video is on purpose by the developer, but that may only be for Skyward Sword. It's possible that previous games didn't have the same idea of the Triforce and it's something that came about only in SS.

I would call it a lot like the Elden Ring in that respect, as a concept. It's the bridge between the human and the divine, made up of human ambition. It's existence necessitates that you be willing and able to fight for it when the opportunity arises. If you don't seize the chance to enact the change you want to see in the world, someone else will instead- on a metaphysical level in these cases because they're fantasy settings sure, but it works well allegorically to show how these sorts of struggles make people IRL _feel._

There is however a piece of dialogue between Zelda and Link in SS where she says that if Link can claim the "actual triforce" they will be able to defeat demise, leading me to believe that Link did not really have it all along and the symbols on his hand in this specific case indicated that he acquired the virtues needed. I can t imagine nintendo going that deep with zelda and making such a hidden plot point.

I just have to say, the triangle of virtues that Nintendo chose is a really powerful and insightful concept. It doesn't feel videogame-y, it feels like it comes from a well thought-out worldview. (And I'm guessing that there is a philosophical precedent set in history for this triune theory of guiding principles, whether the Zelda devs were aware of it or not)

I think some folk have been focusing on the fact that we can literally collect pieces of the Triforce in later games as a physical object which is distracting from the premise of the video. It very well could be that the Triforce didn't have a physical form until a human like Link was able to manifest it through the various trials that Hylia set up for him. The reason it never happened before was because of Demise. When we first meet him, he mentions how the humans he met were cowardly, clinging to their goddess. They weren't capable of doing what Link had done because they were used to relying on something that wasn't themselves. We can assume that until Link had acquired the conplete Triforce, every human was capable of bringing out the Triforce as it wasnt made manifest like we see in the earlier games. Link was merely the catalyst for its creation. In a way, Demise was seeking something that could only ever be made by the mortals he slaughtered not knowing that the golden power of the goddesses wasn't just something you can take yet
@Excalibur5k

could it be that triforce was somehow placed within links soul when he was born using some magic time power w/e because hylia knew he would eventually unlock it in the future, rather than it being something that every living being has? because the triforce pieces in other games were like physical objects you could find. wind waker link gained the triforce of courage by finding the literal pieces of it in treasure chests.

I really liked the video. Even if I don't fully agree, it was a really interesting idea. I personally think SS Link actually HAS the triforce within him all along, he was born with it. The trials inside his mind were to develop the qualities so he could awaken the Triforce. We see the same idea in BOTW. I do believe Zelda has the full triforce in that game, as we see it when she seals ganon. Also, sealing ganon depended on the power of zelda + the sages in the past, but BOTW zelda can do that by herself. In the memories, we see she couldn't use her powers initially, and I believe it's because she hadn't developed all the 3 qualities to use the full triforce she was born with. She already had Wisdom, as we see her becoming kind of a scientist, studying sheikah knowledge etc. She knew she had Power cause her mother had it and it's passed trough blood, she also had visions and all that. The only thing she was missing was Courage. She was always afraid and being protected by link or others. The moment she is able to awaken her powers is when she finally has the courage to stand up and put herself in harms way to protect those she loved. Bam, all 3 qualities developed, Triforce awakened.

I think viewing the elements that make up the triforce as the necessary characteristics you need to enforce change in the world is a nice observation. Personally though I'm still of the opinion that at least in regards to the Zelda universe the triforce is an object that can't be replicated and that not everyone has inside of them. I don't think anyone but Link (even if they went through the exact same trials and tribulations) would have been able to get access to it. But nice video man! Keep it up!

The only thing I've wondered about the triforce is why they've never used it to get rid of demise/ganon for good. It's essentially the power to change the world in literally any way you want. Why can't they use it to break the cycle? I get why they wouldn't do that from Nintendo's perspective but from a story perspective it's almost stupid they don't.

This is actually really genius! The triforce is real, but it is created when someone developes the necessary spiritual equivalent to that triforce piece. Zelda being the wisest in Hyrule creates the piece of wisdom, link creates the piece of courage by being the most courageous in Hyrule and Ganondorf being the most powerful creates the piece of power. In skyward sword though the triforce has never been touched, and through playing the games it's odd to see the very first link hesitate before entering dungeons. Until I realize that in THIS time of Hyrule, not even link had the piece of courage yet! Even demise states that humans in this era couldn't even look at him let alone challenge him! We watch Link slowly more courageous, grow smarter, and become more powerful throughout the game. He developed perfect balance with all three and in that moment, created the triforce before himself! This may also be what happened in botw when Zelda used what looked like the full triforce to seal Ganon away. In that moment she was courageous for saving link, knew what to do, and had the power to do so creating the triforce for just a second! This theory changed my perspective on the whole series
@kaankaraca2001

This is interesting considering the fact that Skyward Sword Link is the only one who obtains the whole Triforce in this way. Timeline-wise, the Golden Goddesses give the Triforce to Hylia to protect it, then it's in the Sacred Realm protected by the Door of Time/Master Sword covered by the Temple of Time built by Rauru before the events of Ocarina of Time happen... Since it's stated that the Sacred Realm was the place the Triforce was left in the backstory to OOT, I'm assuming Hylia was tasked with protecting the Sacred Realm... But because there is the danger of a piece of the Triforce going to Demise, Hylia plans this plot where, through the Sacred Flames, her chosen hero would be granted the whole Triforce, and her sword would be imbued with the power to take on whoever wields a piece of the Triforce, as described in ALTTP (though the detail of SS Link being the one to do that instead of ancient sages would change over time and embellishment, and I suppose calling the wise heroes of old myth the "ancient sages" makes sense in the historical context of ALTTP)... So then, the Triforce in the Sacred Realm until Link collects the Sacred Flames and the Triforce comes to him, and he has to "pluck it out" of his soul at the end of the game? Then I suppose when Link makes his wish in SS, it goes back to the Sacred Realm and it stays in there, guarded inside the Temple of Time, until the events of Ocarina of Time where Ganondorf touches it by tricking OOT Link and Zelda... And the reason none of the other Links can't literally "earn" the Triforce in the same way because Hylia's Sacred Flames are already in the Master Sword and that "spell" Hylia put in the flames can't be repeated, so the only other way people can get pieces of the Triforce is if someone touches it... and because of the reincarnation cycle it's always Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. Jesus my brain hurts, I don't know if that made any sense, and I know this video is meant to be a beautiful and true metaphorical message. I can't help but get hung up on the literal details though lmao.

Speaking of real world parallels, the idea of the Triforce always being inside of Link as a manifestation of the Force/Tao that is in everyone and everything (as well as the idea that it can be fully realized through spiritual trials and deep meditation) all lines up perfectly with Eastern spirituality, which I’ve been learning a lot about over the past months. Shouldn’t come as a surprise considering how the Japanese Zelda team has undoubtedly been heavily influenced by Shinto Buddhism or other similar branches of thought. I mean hell, they even designed the entire Ancient Cistern around Buddhist imagery and parables. These themes have undeniably had a huge impact on the entire Zelda series, but we’ve seen them most explicitly in Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and already very much in Tears of the Kingdom. Also everyone should check out Monster Maze’s recent video on the same concept. It’s a bit longer and takes a more lore-heavy approach, so I think the two compliment each other super well

I'm starting to think Link isn't collecting those golden orbs to reforge the master sword in the sense that they make it whole as you get each one, but rather you're gathering pieces of a shattered triforce so as to wish the Master Sword back together. What might end up happening is that since this Ganondorf is more powerful than all others and can destroy the master sword we knew, it might mean we get a master sword more powerful as a result, or it might create the sword of the golden goddesses, sort of like how the sword of the goddess was the sword of goddess Hylia.

Or maybe it will be called something like the, "Sword of Hyrule's Hope" considering the game is called Tears of the Kingdom. Something to that effect. Something that will end the cycle of blood shed for good. As Tears of the Kingdom and the ouroburous symbol likely refer to the eternal suffering induced by Demise's curse, and this game likely centers around the idea of breaking the cycle, which BOTW more or less sets up.

In Skyward Sword the triforce was never split, so Link needs all 3 tests to bear all the 3 pieces. It's canon that a being with perfect spirit balance can actually hold the full triforce, otherwise the piece with the most align sticks with the being. After Ocarina of Time, Links will ever hold only the Courage one, Zelda will ever hold the wisdom piece and Ganodorfs the power piece. So no longer can beings get the full triforce unless they extract from the holders. Hence, they will be compelled to each other to battle for it, since each of them has at most one piece of the triforce. The real plot twist is the introduction of another sacred source of power: the tears. And along with it, the questions of how much power they have? How they are related to the triforce? What are the rules for bearing them ?

im confused. are we talking purely metaphorical here? or in universe lore? your word choice throughout the video and comment replies seem to imply both at different times? think im just misunderstanding. in the beginning you say the your not trying to argue that the lore of the 3 goddesses is wrong, but then you say a lot of stuff that sounds like that's exactly what your saying, or at least implying this there is actually physical ingame lore/canon connection. in your reply to the pinned comment, you seem to double down on it actually happening in the game. but again i think im just getting tripped up by the words. as a metaphor, i totally get behind this. ive always thought from a literary perspective, the triforce represented the the idea of the perfect/idealized person the journey to better oneself. not taking shortcuts among other things. and i think the way you worded it that humans LITERALLY use power,courage and wisdom to achieve goals was beautiful. really like that line of thought. 3/3 writing as for any ingame context. i guess i could get behind it if your strictly speaking about SS and the meta-narrative of links hero's journey. but once you get into the other zeldas it gets really messy. the triforce is/are singular object/objects which it has a will and mind of its own. they are more than just human power. so in a physical "its real in the game sense" its impossible to say that both the canon of the 3 goddesses AND link creating the triforce are both true. the reality is that the triforce has been wildly different in most all its appearances. the OOT-TP is the most consistent as they are basically a single narrative, but they also contradict previous titles. though i have a theory that could reconcile your theory....but this is not the place for that...ill be typing all night and its already past 5am XD(all-night mask required)

I think this only works in Skyward Sword, which is of course the first chronologically of the series. The first embodiment of Link and Zelda and Demise the first antagonist. It may very well have been placed for Link specifically in this game. But in other games it's seemingly very different. Also what this says about canon who knows as they made this one to sort of tie things together even though it produces issues like this.

Overall I really like your videos! This one reminds me of a talking point I have seen in your other recent videos. You keep saying that Denise is unkillable and Hylia knows it. I disagree with that. My understanding is that killing Demise and vanquishing his hatred forever was her goal all along. She couldn’t do it herself because Hylia isn’t allowed to use the Triforce. She was created by the old gods to guard it, not to use it. That’s why she needed to create a human hero with the balance of all three virtues. A worthy wielder of the Triforce can destroy Demise, and that’s what happens when Link prays to the Triforce at the Goddess statue. Demise is completely destroyed. But mythology is littered by cruel jokes played by the gods or by demons. Demise got one up on Hylia by frustrating her plan. Girahim steals Zelda into the past, before Demise perished, and breaks the seal on Demise. Demise ensured that his hatred would live on, by his own guile and ingenuity. He frustrates Hylia’s plan for final victory. Hylia isn’t all powerful; she’s a second tier goddess with big limitations on her power

I don’t really have any big critiques about your formulation of the metaphors in Skyward Sword, though. Well done on that.

well...I would disagree..at least its not true in case of "all" Zelda games...The 2D Zelda games had a different approach to the Triforce..it granted the wish of the first person who touches it until he/she dies...than the next persons who touched it..at least that was the concept in "A link to the past"

Wow , this makes a lot sense , at least the part of link having the triforce all along, he just needed to be worth of claim it..i guess this is practically canon if you think about it , also could explain why link of all humans he was the chosen one ..wonder what they did after the end of the game with the triforce, link used it again ? He created a new peaceful era ? .

Zelda Lore deep diving is always appreciated in my book, good stuff. There's this guy who also does Zelda Lore videos but he uses the original japanese version of the games for his stuff. Here's a video he made that's somewhat related to this theory, if you're interested: Vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3PVfaaeYt92pbs

Bruh goddess reincarnated as link's ideal girl and now I know where Link's real motivation is coming from😂 I was able to finish the game unlike I did in Wii(broken controller) and also I accidentally uppercut myself trying speed running the last boss, motion/gyro for me was fun game 😊 Good content btw Your voice is relaxing it's impossible to be alienated.

Brah, the game tells the silent realm is the realm of the goddesses. It's not in Link's mind. And the triforce pieces are in the realms of the golden goddeses in skyward sword.

@@ancoru11 not literal physical objects, spiritual in nature. When link opens the gate to to temple, the assembled piece fuses with his hand. Even the boat thought it was just a trinket, but that was proof Link was someyhing greater than just a kid. Plus, it was made by gods, come on, some magic stuff is always possible.

Good video, but I think this theory is a bit too similar to part of Monster Maze's theory he posted about a month ago on the Triforce in Breath of The Wild. You say that Link created the Triforce, but your argument actually supports the theory that Link already had the Triforce and was tempering his ability to wield it. The explanation in the beginning isnt really a part of the theory that Link created it, its more of an explanation of the balance of virtues and how they make the Triforce what it is, and how it requires its wielder to embody those parts before it can be used in its full power. I agree with that, because its just what the Triforce is and how it operates. However, the rest of your theory is almost exactly the same as Monster Maze's theory on this part of Skyward Sword. Its entirely possible that you came to this conclusion on your own, however you may want to atleast mention Monster Maze's theory because it is very similar. The only discernable difference I see here is that you seem to believe that every human/living creature has the Triforce inside of itself, however I disagree. I believe that Hylia designated a champion, and in doing so she hid the Triforce within his bloodline. In order to section off the triforce before he had sufficient experience, she hid it in the Silent Realm. The realm could be a metaphor for the mind of all living things, but unique to each individual, or it could be unique to her chosen champion(s). Either way I believe she hid the Triforce inside of the Silent Realm which only her chosen champion and his descendants could access. If it were inside of everyone, then theoretically anyone could awaken the properties to wield all of it. While unlikely, I doubt she would risk the fate of the world on such a glaring weakpoint. Other than that bit, I think its a great theory, which will have significance going forward due to Monster Maze's aforementioned theory. Want to bookend this by saying I'm not attacking you, I quite like your theories and videos, and want to see more of you in the Zelda and Souls communities going forward. Just had to point out those similarities with MM's video.

The main issue with this is conflating Link to people at large. Link is the chosen hero, the destined one. It isn't for everyone. Yes, of course, Link is a stand in for the player but that's clearly not what's going on. Ocarina of Time introduces many of these concepts and fleshes them out, and you can't look at the rest of the series without understanding that a Christian framework (more or less) informs the rest. Having the virtue to obtain the Triforce is a messianic thing, I mean just look at the series. Wind Waker has about as close of a reference as you can get to John the Baptist questioning Jesus (the King and Jabun). Another thing is that Fi mentions 'many Silent Realms' which could easily handwave the fact that Link did in fact go 'somewhere' to get the Triforce pieces. And again, yes the series is aspirational, Link is a role model, but the idea of a chosen hero, a specific person, of amazing and unique talents, that is prophesied and fulfills those prophecies is down to the core of the series DNA.
