Thomas takes a toll for the dark “Prime” was smart enough to provide an answer to that question; ‘Cons wear the badge of “deceiver” proudly on their chests for the same reason why many real-world Trump supporters chose to adopt the term “Deplorables” after Hillary labeled them as such. Back when Megatron was just a budding former-gladiator-turned-fascist-rebel-rouser from the mean streets of Iacon, the Cybertronian High Council started casually, jokingly referring to Megatron’s followers as “Decepticons” as a way of attempting to undermine Megatron’s messages-patronizingly insult the lot of them as a bunch of lying grifters. They’re Deceivers and Con-Artists...”Decepticons.” Unfortunately, just like Hillary calling Trump’s base “Deplorables,” the targets of this smear campaign chose not to self-reflect, not to examine what they were doing, not to stifle themselves out of public shame, but rather to double down and turn the smear campaign in their favor. The same way that Trump’s “Deplorables” didn’t get shamed back into hiding, the ‘Cons eagerly adopted the title, publicly rationalizing that if speaking “the truth” was a lie, then they would proudly call themselves deceivers. It’s a frankly brilliant way of explaining the origin of the faction’s seemingly self-undermining name, and it’s a credit to Transformers lore that the writing can get good enough that real-world events can later parallel this fictional world of collectible toys punching each other. It’s just a shame that it’s so easy to draw parallels between the rise-to-power of Megatron and Trump, since it’s frankly an insult to the complex, tragic villain Megatron to compare anything about him to the P*ssy-Grabber-In-Chief...but there are some unsettling similarities regardless. This little side story is also a great examination of how responding to rising, fascistic tides of hate with belittling, un-empathetic slurs to try to put them in their place doesn’t work. Maybe you should have watched some Transformers before you ran, Hil.

In the IDW comics friggin' MEGATRON joined the Autobots and Soundwave became a leader of a Transformers equality movement, while Starscream became the legally elected ruler of Cybertron for a time before relinquishing the position to Windblade. Also the Seekers Skywarp and Thundercracker joined G.I. Joe, with the latter, due to having spent years watching Earth television while laying low, became a script writer and director who made a friggin' movie about Starscream and his storyline ended with him winning the Oscar.

Ore-13 has an interesting story. It was a project by Shockwave, who saw an energon shortage coming early in the War, so he seeded Earth and other planet with Energon to later basically corner the market when the shortage came. He hadn't counted on the Dynobots, however, who had been pissed at Shockwave ever since he blew up a load of energon they had stolen from the Decepticons. So when Shockwave went to Earth alone towards the end of the Ice Age to stabliize the energon deposits, the Dynobots followed. But since all that Energon around was giving off energy, they go full Beast Wars and scan some Dino DNA to get their Dinosaur forms(Wooly mammoths weren't doing anything for Grimlock), and attack. Shockwave defeats the Dinobots, but Grimlock had a contingency in their ship to fire on their position if they lost. They all got buried, leaving the energon on Earth only partially stabilized. Most of which eventually decayed into Ore-13.

It soon transpires that the other 12 ores have unique traits (Ore-1 throws time out of joint, Ore-2 ceases vital life functions without killing, Ore-6 absorbs heat, Ore-7 heals and so on), and that the planets he grew the ores on (LV-117, Gorlam Prime, Caminus, Devisun, Arduria, Carcer, Velocitron, Eukaris, TshiTshi, Earth, Elonia and Antilla) are the burial places of the 13 Primes (or in the latter case, dedicated to Alpha Trion)

I agree. Soundwave is one of my favorites, and I always liked that his voice was basically Frank Welker's Dr. Claw voice with vocal distortion processing on it. He has a menacing lack of emotion in his voice, making him one of the most threatening Decepticons. And overall, a great play gimmick and overall design and alt mode.

The agreement Marvel has with Hasbro, when they aquired the ROM property, was that they (Marvel) kept *their* version of the Dire Wraiths (as another Skrull offshoot), the planet & the basic Marvel-created lore (including the shared use of 'Spaceknight'). IDW was told to use the 'original lore' from the old commercial, which included the SolStar Order. IDW did a magnificent job creating new lore & backstory to ROM that fit well into the shared 'Hasbroverse'. I think there is a Transformers Meets My Little Pony miniseries out. I didn't pick it up. But I did pick up most of the crossover issues with ROM's appearances. I have to say, IDW did a better job than most cross-property mass-ups. The only *real* crossing that irked me was bringing in the Visionaries. I'm glad they updated them, but kind of horseshoe-ing them in really didn't fit for me. ROM recently got a new miniseries, ROM: Dire Wraiths, showing how the Wraiths made it to Earth in the late 1960's.

I second this. I would also recommend Robots in Disguise 2012 book as it is also good and helps set the scene for the Dark Cybertron event which affects the second third of MTMTE, but it isn't quite as good and isn't necessary supplementary reading after Dark Cybertron if you just wanted to read MTMTE and Lost Light.

@@JeffreyPiatt Yes. Overpowered. Which is why they constantly had to use dues ex machina mcguffins to solve their bigger problems. All things considered, if we just keep it to the mane 6, Twilight and Rainbow Dash (maybe Rarity as well) are really the only ones who might be effective against a transformer. Fluttershy would be scared out of her gourd, a reasonable response in this case, Applejack would be outgunned, Pinkie Pie herself would just be an annoyance. Thats half the team taken out already. Even if we include all the princesses, keep in mind, they were constantly being captured and beaten in the series. Honesty, for anyone from MLP to win, Teilight would have to Super Alicorn like in season 4, and they would still probably have to get Discord to help, if his magic is the same across univereses anyway.

Worth noting is that most transformers fans hated this series and the shared universe that spawned from it. Booth because they read it for the transformers, not all these fleshlings and because IDW subsequently seemed to love "worfing" (the act of having a new character defeat an established "strong" character in order to establish said character as "stronger") the transformers with them (Poor Kup....). it's often seen as what caused the comic's eventual downfall and reboot.

The original Transformers and G.I. Joe cartoons are well known to be in the same universe, but so was Jem & The Holograms and Inhumanoids. My Little Pony ALMOST was part of it as well, My Little Pony: The Movie was originally scripted with cameo scenes involving Optimus Prime and G.I. Joe member Shipwreck.

The funniest thing about that is the common thread that binds them all comes in the form of tabloid TV reporter Hector Ramirez. It's also likely (but not really demonstrated) that Robotix takes place in that universe too (albeit in the "future" of 2005 and beyond). Visionaries and various other properties could also slot in although not being connected to Earth or a particular point in time it's hard to say.

1:13- Insert "The Ring" reference here. I haven't really grown up to G.I. Joe, and most of the knowledge I have on the franchise is from the live action movies, which I really enjoy watching. The films are like a James Bond cake with Star Wars icing. 10:19- My favorite Transformer is still Optimus Prime, because of how much of a badass leader of the Autobots he is. 15:56- Either that or *BECAUSE POOR LITERACY IS KEWL.* 26:14- "I FED UP WITH THIS WORLD!" 28:30- I guess it makes about as much sense as Ultimate Marvel's Ultimatum. 31:51- As a fan of crossovers featuring major franchises, this one was really name good.

A couple critiques, if I may? 5:17 - Maybe it's "masked" soldiers, but if you said M.A.S.K. soldiers, errr... this crossover is what created the organization in-universe. This flashback shows the prelude to the GI Joe team- Adventure Force (the European name of GI Joe, funny enough). In fact, Manhiem and Colton are both part of this team (as shown in this panel). 21:44 - Wrong franchise, that is a space bridge, tho, seeing how SG-1 reacts to Cybertronians would be interesting... (Sidebar: Tiny nitpick, Ik, but I really wanted to reference Stargate 😂).

Honestly, ending the war was the most interesting thing the Transformers franchise did since Beast Wars, and was what got me reading the old IDWverse comics. And then Lindsay got me into MTMTE/Lost Light, which I highly recommend. I loved what it did - Autobot villains, Decepticon good guys, President Starscream, Soundwave's commune, Autobot Megatron, etc. But I think trying to slot it into a shared universe made it a confusing hodgepodge, and I think it would have been better to keep it separate.

I'd also reccomend Robots In Disguise (no connection to the TV show(s) of the same name) and Till All Are One myself, they're pretty different tonally, but the idea of giant robots grappling with serious political issues in the depths of space is just bizzare and fun. Oh, also the Windblade miniseries, because unironically it's probably the best thing that's ever been done with that character.

@@Savagewolver I think a lot of people have softened on her more recently (partly because she was at least inoffensive if not good in Cyberverse, partly because some people started liking her out of spite after that one model kit controversy, and partly because of people going back to actually read the comics she was in and finding them actually pretty good), but at least back when she first showed up? Oh yeah, people *loathed* her, generally viewing her as the latest example of a badly written Strong Female Character being forced into an existing franchise to suit an agenda. That wasn't really the case (or, if it was true to the letter of that it certainly wasn't true to the meaning behind those words- i.e. a shitty holier-than-thou asshole who shits all over established characters), but it took years for people to even give her a chance after those hackles were raised. Nowadays I think the people who hate her the most are ironically probably the blogpost-writing ex-tumblrites who used to like her... right up until she said their husbando Starscream wasn't a good person after in-universe years of blackmail, attempted assassination and occasional psychological torture at his hands (while quietly ignoring the thing that happened after that where she *still* tried to see the best in him and have faith that he could change in time). Transformers fans are weird man.

I'm a huge and avid reader of the IDW comics, and I'm afraid that while this crossover spawned some of the best things in the later comics of this continuity, the consequences of how chaotic keeping it all in line with each other became ultimately killed it as well. While GI Joe would survive due to the fact that it still had its own separate continuity to still do, and Transformers spawned a new continuity that, while slow to start, has been doing pretty good, most of the rest of the comics in this crossover haven't been seen again. And the less we say about the slap-dash ending of this continuity with the Unicron storyline, the better. The saddest loss was Thundercracker's continuous storyline as a failing screenwriter who loves his dog, and Skywarp the GI Joe. ...and yes, for all of you who haven't read the comics, those are things that happened.

Also, fun fact, believe it or not, there was at some obscure point in time a plan for a MLP x Transformers crossover comic that at the very least made it to cover art before it was scrapped. (You’ll have to forgive this post for rambling a little-but when the hell else am I gonna get to gush about Soundwave?) Happy to see ROM make his glorious return to the show...AND to see so much love being bestowed upon Soundwave. You can really tell that the IDW TF writers loved the old Marvel run, with all of its crazy status quo shakeups, dubious choices by the heroes, and most pertinent to this story: its unexpected allegiance changes. It’s strange, but not unwelcome as an experiment, to see Soundwave wearing a white hat for a change. It actually makes you wonder how the Decepticons can get along without him, because you’re 100% correct in your assessment of him, Lewis: the Bot is competence incarnate. The only reason Starscream is Megatron’s right-hand man when even Megatron himself can tell that Starscream is desperate to put a dagger in Megatron’s back is because Megatron knows that his REAL right-hand man Soundwave is always ready to step out from the shadows and grab the dagger before it can land. If Soundwave wanted to lead the Decepticons, he could. No question. But he’s also coldly logical enough to understand why Megatron should be the one leading the ‘Cons, and in most incarnations, will do any number of selfless acts to keep him there. Soundwave IS Bizarro Starscream. My personal favorite interpretation is the mute ninja from Prime-a pet-summoning spy and shinobi, master of communications and shadow missions no one else can be trusted to know about, let alone carry out. Even in the OG Gen 1 cartoon, he was the truest believer in Megatron (well, except for Shockwave, but that counts more as slavish obsession), willing to try to revive him when no other Decepticon would. Fellow Transformer fans: a query. Are there any stories (regardless of medium) that actually detail how Soundwave first came to be Megatron’s Number-One Guy?
