Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara reviews the first appearance of the Hulk!

ORIGINAL INFO: Hulk is strongest one there is! Unfortunately, his origin is not as strong.
RUMINATIONS: It’s quite amazing to me that the Hulk had so many problems back in the day keeping a regular book… hell, that he couldn’t stick with the Avengers for longer than he did originally. I don’t know, maybe it was just an issue of readership not really connecting to the character just yet and it took a while for people to get onboard, maybe the writing just wasn’t there yet… but for whatever, reason it took a lot longer for the character to connect with people. Hell, it’s kind of ironic, then, that there have been so many issues with Hulk solo films. Ang Lee’s film is… blegh, and I sadly haven’t seen the Incredible Hulk film with Edward Norton, so I can’t speak to the quality of that one, but I’ve heard good things from people about it.

I always liked him to be named Zuriel Frankenstein for a couple reasons. I was introduced to comics by Grant Morrison's JLA and he was one of my favorite characters and the monster was religious; having learning how to read by going over a copy of Paradise Lost over and over again and Zuriel was the name of an angel who took on mortal flesh and that's real fitting for him. But I see why Adam fits better.

A) The creature was never actually called Adam in the book (only compared himself to the biblical figure), so insisting that is his true name in order to show off that you have read her letters on the subject is kind of even worse than saying "Frankenstein was the scientist". B) The creature was certainly sympathetic. And Victor was certainly a coward and all around jerk, and never took responsibility for his own actions even when he knew it would hurt others. But the creature murdered 3 innocent people, including a small child, and also framed an innocent woman for the child's murder, just to hurt Victor. And he also demands Victor build him a woman to be his mate with no thought to her having free will or a choice in the matter. So... I'm going to have to disagree on Victor being the "true monster".

Hulk is hands down my fav Marvel Superhero. Not just cause of his strength or the smashing (tho that is fun) but just because of how unique of a superhero he is. In fairness to the 1978 series, they were trying to make the Hulk into a heavily dramatic show. That meant that they had to try and make it a plausible as possible. Sure they still had a hulking green monster, but that's the furthest they went. There were no supervillains or Hulkbusters or other heroes (aside from those god awful crossovers where Hulk met Thor and Daredevil). Just a man trying to rid himself of his monstrous half. Also, with the budget they had, there was no way that they could recreate the origin scene from the comic without it looking stupid as all hell.

I like the MCU origin. Bruce was trying to duplicate the whole Captain America formula thing, and he got the serum wrong, but no one could figure out just what the hell "Vita-Rays" were, so he thought they might be Gamma rays, but it didn't quite go as planned. Still, the use of the serum provides a nice explanation for how he survived and everything.

To draw conclusions of Adam Frankenstein's role as a victim in the story of Frankenstein, one only needs to refer to the original book. Unlike the lumbering degenrate of the movie, the original book had Adam show moderate to above intellect (Ability to not only read, but also reason philosophies of life) and able to fully communicate with Victor in perfect english. Right after the whole "Tampering with sciences that should not be charted," prejudice and the cycle of hatred is the biggest theme of the story and some could argue (Myself included) that it was even the main theme of the story, taking up so much of the narrative and the drive behind it's story, where as the science was more of a foundation that brought us to where the story of prejudice and hatred needed to go.

Although Victor’s self-centered egoism is also important enough to be considered a story theme too. It’s the reason he made Adam, the reason he rejected him (I think?), the reason he never told anyone about it even after it killed his brother, framed his adopted sister for it, and why he lets her get executed despite knowing for certain she’s innocent, which leads his girlfriend to kill herself.

Gonna have to correct you here Linkara, Jekyll & Hyde were _not_ split personnalities in the novel. "Hyde" was just Jekyll free of all his morals, all his self-inflicted restrictions and all his qualms - a chemical secret identity to quote someone. The in-novel-universe explanation for Hyde's younger age is that Jekyll spent so much time restraining himself that his other identity is younger. So, yeah. Jekyll & Hyde is basically one dude creating a magic potion to free himself of Victorian morals... and fighting the addiction to dive back into this free but unhinged state. The problem is that Jekyll got so used to this that (personnal interpretation here) euphoria that he "transformed" into Hyde without needing any potion.

Fairly sure the creature was called Adam in the book due to the religious subtext. Popular culture went for his creator's name, but it also dictates that werewolves are killed with silver (it came out with Lon Chaney's werewolf movie) and that wasn't really a thing in the original legends. So there. Back to the video with thee!

Also, vampires burning in sunlight was pretty much invented by Hollywood. In most of the myths, they were at most only weakened by it, but Arabic (I think) vampires got STRONGER in sunlight.

The line in the book was something along the lines of "behold the Adam of your labors." The monsters never called himself Adam in the book, and Frankenstein was also the title of the book to begin with

I AGREE; ACCORDING TO THE OG SOURCE MATERIAL BY MARY SHELLEY; THE MONSTER DOESN'T HAVE A NAME; ERGO; IT'S FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER; BECAUSE FRANKENSTEIN IS THE NAME OF THE DOCTOR WHO MADE THE ICONIC MONSTER!!
@henrygvidonas9573

Yup, trying to prove his point by quoting a film adaptation that made changes to the book is a fallacy on Lewis' part to begin with. If Mary Shelley didn't call the creature by his maker's name, which she didn't, then that's what counts. Just one example why it's a fallacy: One could claim the Bible says that Satan was present as a snake at the Passion of Christ because that shitty Mel Gibson movie shows it (if I remember correctly, I only watched that garbage once a long time ago). The Bible actually does NOT say this at all, nowhere in any of the Gospels. No snake, no Satan in attendance. Just that antisemitic piece of shit's additions to the story, because he's such a super-Catholic in his own mind that he knows better than the Gospels.

I think when people criticize how Frankenstein isn't the name of the monster, those people are mainly referring to the original Mary Shelley book, where there was no biological connection between Victor Frankenstein and the creature he created, but I still agree with your take on how the monster has since become known as Frankenstein himself as a result of how he's portrayed in the Universal movies.

Banner: I don't make mistakes Igor Even from day one Banner had an ego. it's actually rather fitting that Banner became the only victim of the G-Bomb given he intended it to be mass produced and used on cities, and later in Hulk Grey he says he could've used his genius to find a cure for cancer and instead like Tony Stark he devoted himself to making weapons.

2:57 Ironic, despite all the criticism, The Hulk (2003) is the only movie adaptation that came close to the comic book origin. While it change the "gamma bomb" to "gamma ray device" it did capture one key aspect of the origin that the TV show the MCU lacked: Banner suffering his accident after trying to save an innocent, rather than just testing on himself. This aspect helps to make Hulk's origin more tragic and already establish Bruce's character as selfless person, willing to sacrifice himself for others.

Bruce Banner's full name is Robert Bruce Banner and has been for as long as I can remember, even back to the older silver age marvel comics. David is actually Banner's birth name, named after his real father. I don't know how many of the comics you have read as I don't know how much of a fan you are of the Incredible Hulk, but that is how it is. David Bruce Banner was the alias he went by for a while to disassociate himself from himself. There are lots of people out there who go by their middle names.
@martianmanhunter37
@martianmanhunter37 7 жыл бұрын
But both of these things were retcons. His first name became "Robert" when Stan Lee misremembered Bruce name as "Bob" in one comic, and later explained it as his full name being Robert Bruce Banner. And the "David" birth name was a reference to the show. The reason he was called David on the show was because the producer thought that superheroes having alliterative names was a corny idea.

Crap, if Tony is responsible for transistors, does that mean he's going to start confiscating all technology based on them as part of an arc where he takes responsibility for that which he wrought on the world? ...and ends up freeing most prisoners because much of our modern security technology relies on it? Hey, there's an interesting analogue....
