Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the adaptation of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home!
atopthefourthwa...
Originally uploaded July 23rd, 2012.
ORIGINAL INFO: The movie is about a crew in a stolen alien vessel going back in time to rescue some whales so they can talk to an alien probe. Why wasn’t this a comic book FIRST?
RUMINATIONS: The opening rant in this episode feels… quite a bit off nowadays. While I still struggle to say that any particular Star Trek episode is a “message” show in the way described (specifically written with a ‘THIS IS THE LESSON’), it’s easily misinterpreted to mean that Star Trek LACKED any kind of social messages and that’s not what I really want to say. They were still articulating the problems of the era and reflect the reality of everyday life, just not in particular the way they were suggesting. Racism was a factor in “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield,” but I don’t think it was strictly the focus of it. After all, it wasn’t “Your racism destroyed your world!” it was that even after 50,000 years and the loss of everything they were fighting for… they couldn’t let go of their hatred for one another. But then again, that’s just my own interpretation of it and shouldn’t be accepted as fact or gospel on the matter.
Like I said back in the Batman: A Word to the Wise review, the Gunslinger storyline was the one that underwent the most changes from conception to execution. As a result, I knew I needed to plan it waaay in advance, get as many scripts finished for it as I could. As such, when I was asked by the higher ups at Channel Awesome if I’d like to fly to Washington, DC to lobby congress about SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act, in case you missed all that a few years ago), I knew the opportunity to film in DC had to be taken advantage of. I wore a few of the outfit pieces underneath the regular suit I wore and kept the rest in my bags, making sure to keep my sleeves down (although I should note the other reason why the sleeves were down was because it was December and COLD). Filming in DC is actually okay to do as long as it’s not on a tripod and you alert the police around you that you’re doing it, which we did. Even Angry Joe filmed a brief bit with Corporate Commander… although he wisely decided to not wear his helmet for it. Still, that worked out just fine, since it allowed for the joke of me running past and hitting him.
Subsequently, the bits with Brad Jones were filmed during To Boldly Flee, as part of a vlog we did about me going to White castle, since I had never been there before and Brad’s a big White Castle fan. While I’m not really sold on the sliders (partially because I prefer plain hamburgers vs. cheeseburgers), the chicken rings sold me on their absurdity and, well, fried chicken-ness. The final shots of me walking in front of the sunset came from the same day, done while filming this episode, since I needed fill-ins and the sun was coming down, so I knew a few spots down near where I lived that would look perfect for it.
As for the review portion, I’m quite surprised I even managed to throw something together that looked in ANY way similar to Kirk’s outfit in the film. I’m not even sure what it is he’s wearing in the movie - some kind of combination wrap-around and sort-of frilled shirt underneath? Still, showing off the green uniform and season 1/2 TNG uniforms justified their purchases, so there’s always that.

TRUE STORY: When I was younger, I went to an ST convention in iowa. James Doohan, the original Scotty, was there, and I had a Voyage Home card with his line "Admiral, there be whales here!", which he autographed. And I still have the card, to this day.

"There are other intelligent life forms on earth, Doctor. Only Human arrogance would assume the message was meant for man." Another problem with that line is that the team that McCoy used, "Earthlings," is defined as "inhabitants of the Earth," which would cover those other intelligent life forms as well, not just Humans. Someone as fastidious as Spock should remember that.

FINALLY, I can finally talk about Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home!!!! Despite watching the original six films with the original series later in life, this is actually the one that I have the most unintentional nostalgia for, mainly in the location shooting. As a kid who grew up in California, I used to go to places like San Fransisco and The Monterey Bay Aquarium so it's nice to see those places being represented in a movie that I found particularly enjoyable. Easily the most fun out of all the Star trek films.

You know... I was on the Enterprise, and even a Nuc so I worked on the reactors. A. none of them had any signs like that, nor a damn thing about clearance. Just little radiology signs everywhere making clear you need to be wearing a dosimeter of some kind. As such, my thought is, if anyone WAS caught down there. The real reason it would cause an issue, isn't security being all paranoid and upset. But rather ELT's pissed off at all the paperwork they'd need to do to handle radiological exposure estimations for them. Unless it was the second RO I had while there. He'd just be pissed they were standing around doing nothing in the plant rather then cleaning.

'Message' Star Trek Episodes.... yeah - ST:TNG was probably the most guilty of that from what I recall. My most unfavorite episode TNG episode being the one about Warp Drive ripping holes in the universe ("Force of Nature") - aka Our 20th century destruction of the Ozone layer. ( '_______' ) ~ *sigh* For me, it was the WORST episode ever written into the TNG continuity, which caused more plot holes in the entire series and DS9 for such a loooo~ooong time afterwards. Well, that episode and the 'Masaka is coming, Data mask excursion' ("Masks") episode that my and my Trekkie BFF both swear was written after someone had inhaled a little-too-many spray paint fumes.

Personally, I consider "Homeward" from Season 7 to be my least favorite TNG episode, most notably because it makes Picard into an asshole who is completely willing to let an entire society go extinct just so that he won't have to worry about violating the Prime Directive by interfering with the Boraalan society's development... even though they were facing complete extinction because of something they had no control over. And this dogmatic reverence for the Directive would only get worse in Voyager.

Really it just comes down to HOW you want to deliver that message because there is a difference between sharing a message that's meant to better humanity versus forcing or condescending that same message to people. I don't know about anyone else, but I believe in an old saying "It's easier to catch files with honey than with vinegar". Meaning that you're more likely to convince people through friendlier means of compassion, understanding, and consideration than shouting, blaming, or shaming other people.

Star Trek IV and TMP are very unique among Trek films, since there is no true "villain" in either movie. Yes, V'GER in TMP serves an antagonistic force in its own right, but it is not intentionally malicious. Its motivations are not villainous in any traditional sense. It only wants to fulfil its programming. The same can be said of the Whale Probe in IV. It does things that seem antagonistic, but that is not its intention. No space ship battles, no sinister villain... Star Trek IV is almost the anti-Wrath of Khan, and it's a perfect trilogy ender if you don't count Undiscovered Country as a Tetralogy ender.

In the intervening years, I've reevaluated a bit and it is... its problem is that it takes a bit of "both sides-ism" to the thing that feels iffy. Sure, in the actual story both ARE really terrible, but considering it's supposed to be a representative of the actual conflict it feels like a bad message to send: "One side is oppressed for racist reasons!" "I'm trying to gain supporters to stop the subjugation and oppression!" "BOTH OF THESE ARE BAD."

However, there's nothing wrong with agreeing with popular opinion and it's possible I have my own when viewing them. Speaking of which, I want to address something when it comes to Lewis's past rant about The Original Series not being a "Message Show"'. "I AM A FLYING METAPHOR FOR ECOLOGICAL COLLAPSE!" Yeah, the thing is, people's problems with believing in environmental science is that the effects are subtle and indirect-more hurricanes, changing sea levels, desertification, more mosquitoes etc. Filmmakers get the message across by making the consequences immediate: Giant space probe, whatever the hell was going on in the Day After Tomorrow, Birdemic, etc. Unfortunately, that just makes the subject harder to take seriously, as the fantasy outcome makes the very real problem look equally fantastic.

The reason Gillian was upset about the release of the whales was because they would then be vulnerable to whaling, which was a hot button issue of the day. As for why she was upset... emotional attachment? I mean, if your cat was going to be given to a new home and you thought you were going to be able to say goodbye, but they were taken while you were out of your home, wouldn't you be upset too? *shrug* That scene makes sense to me, idk, Is it logical? No, but a central theme of the film is about the validity of feelings even when not strictly logical, so I don't see a problem with it. Theme reinforced, imo.

I never understood the "no cloaking device" treaty with the Romulans. It is not like a strategic arms limitation treaty where both sides won't use the technology, the Romulans can have them (and the Klingons, though they aren't in the treaty), but the Federation cannot. And it doesn't seem like the Federation got anything in return. Which makes me wonder if the "stalemate" story is Federation propaganda, and the Romulans really won the war and imposed the terms on the Federation.

@@AT4W Well, do bear in mind that Enterprise was heading toward the Romulan war, so presumably the treaty was negotiated by Johnathan Archer. Chekov has a Russian accent, so that's how he says "vessels".

I hate to be that guy, but… you don’t still believe that Let That Be Your Last Battlefield isn’t about racism, right? Like, maybe this is my reading as a person of color, but the episode is… VERY about racism and it’s down the middle “actually mutual hatred is a bad” ending message is honestly its biggest flaw. Treating the oppressed as nearly as evil as the oppressor is just… wrong to me.
@AT4W
@AT4W Жыл бұрын
Yeah, no, I've changed my opinion since then - it's consequently why that bit got cut from the movie compilation video. It DOES seem to have that "mutual hatred is bad" issue, as you said, though it's propped up by amazing performances - especially from Frank Gorshin.
