1:35 "And by the way, you know it's a weird reality where the third guy to hold the Blue Beetle name appears before Superman does." Fun fact about The Blue Beetle for those who don't know, he's the basis for Watcmen's "Nite Owl". Among all the retrospectives you’ve done, this is probably my favorite. It perfectly encapsulates and gives a comprehensive yet easy look at the entireity of the Blue Beetle at the time sans Rebirth. 1:02:50 - Actually, the intent from the beginning was to set up a shared Charlton Universe. I don't recall anything specifically connecting Nature Boy, Son of Vulcan, Yellowjacket or Thunderbolt to the other heroes (though it's been a while since I read through my Action Heroes library). However, Captain Atom, Nightshade, Sarge Steel, Blue Beetle and the Question were all connected. Judomaster's series was chronologically set during WWII, making him technically Charlton's oldest (retroactive) hero. In Judomaster #92, he fought a Nazi agent named the Smiling Skull. A year previously (1965), Sarge Steel fought a still active Smiling Skull in the modern day. This definitely connected the two series, and the Smiling Skull remained a recurring antagonist for the both of them. Captain Atom #82 introduced Nightshade as an ally of the Captain, and her backstory was expanded on in Captain Atom #87-89. Here, it was shown that she was training with a now grown-up Tiger, who had been Judomaster's sidekick back in WWII. This connected Judomaster, Captain Atom, Nightshade and Sarge Steel together. You already mentioned the appearance by Vic Sage in the Blue Beetle series, but there was also a story that connected him to Peacemaker. In Charlton Premiere #3, a one-shot character named Sinstro, Boy Fiend crossed over into the Charlton Universe. Essentially, he was a brat from the "real world" where Charlton heroes were fictional characters, and he knew their backstories. The kid, however, preferred villains (and was just a "super smart aleck"), and decided to use his knowledge to make the heroes' lives more difficult. He fought pastiches of Superman, Captain America and Spider-Man (called Superguy, Captain USA and Green Spider), but also fought Ted Kord and Peacemaker, thus connecting the two. So, yeah, there actually was a Charlton shared universe that was in development at the time, and already established. We had WWII era heroes, legacy heroes, and modern heroes. There was even a sort of Multiverse established with the Sinistro story. And that's not all. Three more heroes were introduced right before the Action Heroes line was cancelled in Charlton Premiere #1: Spookman (a time traveling archeaologist dressed like a ghostly pilgrim, who I think would be most comparable to the Spectre or Phantom Stranger), the Shape (an artificial lifeform based on Plastic Man), and the Tyro-Team, a trio of adventurers. I apologize if you were already aware of all of this, but I hope you find it interesting. I personally think cancelling the Action Heroes line was a great loss for comics in general, not just Charlton. Imagine what they could have done if the company actually supported it! They already had many diversified characters and a shared universe established within 2 years. At least they did it quicker (and better) than 90's Image. I'm happy that DC bought them, especially as a gift for Dick, but still... I would have liked to see it happen.

Some days, I'm grateful for AT4W's compilations, especially since KZbin's increasingly bad copyright bot system have blocked and/or given copyright strikes for old videos. It's been fun revisiting the evolution of Blue Beetle's legacy - the two versions of Dan Garrett, the exploits of Ted Kord in both the pre-Crisis and post-Crisis eras and his untimely death, Jaime Reyes's adventures following Infinite Crisis...and the terrible New 52 series. Given the Scarab's origin had been retconned as a magic artifact in Rebirth, it's evident that the New 52 comics had been erased from the timeline - that's how bad the New 52 comics are. Still, I wonder if there was a continuation of the New 52 Blue Beetle series being planned, with Jaime not only forced to work with Ted Kord despite his open distrust and hostility towards Kord but also dealing with the fallout from the bad things that had happened to him in the New 52. I wish they had done a Convergence tie in featuring pre-Flashpoint Jaime Reyes and his family. I hope you'll get to do reviews on the Rebirth Blue Beetle series. They've got to be way better than the New 52 comics.

It's why i wish more legacy characters were utilized and played with both in comics and outside them since the concept of the legacy character is brilliant for a superhero universe, directly showing how influential a hero can be by having someone else being so inspired they take on the mantle.

The Dan Garrett era of comics is probably the most I've ever laughed watching an AT4W video (I also love how in the chapters, you added the extra "T" in parentheses to acknowledge that eventual inconsistency with his name)!

Honestly if there was ever a team that needed to be reunited it's Booster, Guy, and Jaime. Mainly because it would make for a killer dude trip series about Jaime being his own man despite being on a team. Captain Atom would be a cool addition, but I prefer Boost, Guy, and Jaime because of brave and the bold bias. If you really wanted to salt a wound Drag Wally out of the speed force and make him lead the team.

Ayn Rand was/is often compared to Nietzsche, though Rand herself hated the comparison calling Nietzsche a mystic because of his obsession with existentialism. But here's the thing, they both use Aesop style stories to convey their philosophy and so both figures have various issues with where the story begins and the philosophy ends. Nietzsche is ironically easier to analyze like this due to having a very clear author/character voice in the work, whereas Rand is telling a story first and expressing a philosophy second leading to a massive disparity between interpretations. So consider Nietzsche, who's works have been co-opted, muddied and heavily altered to meet everything from fascist nationalism to post-communist socialist theory. Now take that and multiply it by Rand's lack of skill as a essayist and you begin to understand why no one can agree on the details of her outlook. I even wrote a paper in university on how we have a more clear understanding of pre-socratic fragments then we do Rand, leading to very bad faith engagement both for and against the ideas she espoused.

When your Blue Beatle retrospective first came out, it inspired me to read the comic. It wasn't my first comic book series but it was my first superhero comic and it opened me up to trying more material similar to that. I was going through a stressful period in my life at that time, but I remember many a days where I sat on the subway, coming home from a bad day at work and feeling better by reading how Jaime Reyes was handling his new life as a superhero. So I thank you, Linkara (PS I'm in a less stressful job now)

I have always loved the dynamic of an older hero mentoring Jamie because they respected Ted and thought the blue beetle deserved to live on. Most depictions I've seen either put batman or booster gold in that role. It usually depends on if Bruce is a dick or not in that universe.

Incredible job on the retrospective. Admittedly, I haven't read any modern comic series since the early 2000s, so not only was this a chance for me to get clued into a hero I've always wondered about but never knew much of - and in a fun and entertaining way - I also had the chance to hear some of the background of what DC has been doing in the new century. Also, Course: Oblivion is one of my favorite Voyager episodes.

two things linkara didn't mention but are pretty cool: first, dan and ted appear in the mini series jla year one. ted gets to invent of the jla's earliest technology saying he wants to be them when he grows up, and dan gets the short of the stick being the test subject of villain's master plot but he gets his payback in the finale. second, dan garret appears in project superpowers by dynamite entertainment. in it, we can see alongside other pd golden age superheroes like black terror, the flame, samson, daredevil and the fighting yank during ww2. but what happens to him is unknown and flashforward to modern day where every superhero is released from imprisonment inside pandora's box( it makes sense in context) the middle east is protected from the frankenstein troops by a secret new hero called THE SCARAB( who is dynamite's lawsuit free character designed so they don't have to pay for the name blue beetle). The scarab runs into the released samson who motivates him to take a more bolder public approach to end the conflict, destroying the frankenstein troops before they can made. we learn his name is amon khadul and like silver age dan he found stone shaped like a scarab, but it was magic just priceless so he sold it to build a financial empire and suit of armor to fight for right. he's also became the project's spy inside a villainous political group called the supremacy

This retrospective was awesome. I remember watching your original video and the amount of praise you gave Jaime's book. At the time I was focussed on reading Geoff Johns Green Lantern books that led into Blackest Night, but your video convinced me to give Blue Beetle a go and he quickly became my 2nd favourite DC superhero. I'm also rather dissapointed with how the New 52 treated him and Threshold was a chore to go through, I just hope the next time we see him in books he'll have a better story.

@@galactic85 Well, the vigilante doesn't have institutional power to abuse or a ton of backing to prevent criticism or consequences for mistakes. Since he wears a costume and draws attention to himself, if he did something to turn society against him, truly screwing up and causing real harm, he wouldn't have an army with military equipment to protect him and put down protest.
