You could also see the three villains as kind of representing regression- Shreck is the most "human", Catwoman is torn between her human and bestial side, and Penguin is the most primal and bestial.

The sight of a bunch of criminals just tampering with the Batmobile is so weird to me. Nowadays, there's no way anybody would be able to touch the thing given how armed to the teeth it is and the amount of security measures Batman would've built into it. There was a Batman TAS episode that did it better. There's only about half a line in the film to say where Penguin got it from, easily missed and often forgotten. I think it was a mechanic they kidnapped? That's who it is in the series, a civilian who does the repair work on the car, never questioning where the money for repairs and parts was coming from since it *is* the Bat, and he had saved the guy at some point.

I think your analysis of Batman's villain is perfectly sound, and after all - otherwise, it would make no sense why why Catwoman's and Penguin's origins were changed for the movie. I really hate when people talk of 'overanalyzing' movies/stories, as if they weren't meticulously produced works of art that took hours, days and weeks of effort to put together.
@blondbraid79866 жыл бұрын
Exactly, if people don't like movie analysis, no one is forcing them to watch and read reviews. And in the case of Batman Returns, there clearly was a huge amount of thought and effort put into the story and visuals of the movie, and not just obvious visual symbolism like Catwoman's costume getting more and more damaged alongside her psyche, but also subtle stuff like numerous visual references to the german expressionist art movement during the silent film era (the villain, Max Schreck, was even named after the actor who played Nosferatu).

Interestng...while the review basically why the comic sucked, it was also a great examination of why the movie is great and why I love it in spite of it's flaws. While there are some weird bits I can see other people not liking (The sexual remarks, Peguin oozing black ichor, and the slightly confusing motives of Shreck) its not so much those that I notice but the character moments. My favorite is of course Selinia's slow spiral into insanity and how Batman has to cope with the fact that he is alone. Indeed, Linkara is right, Batman Forever has a line that kind of submits his arc and links perfectly with the opening scene... "What are you going to do when you find Two Face and kill him?" "I-" "That's right, you'll find another face, and another, and another, until you find yourself alone, like I was." Maybe, unintentionally, there is a point to Batman killing so much in this film. He just lost the ability to care and is now seeing every face as the Joker without remorse. No longer wishing to connect back to his roots and staying the dark knight, but a killing avenger who has no connection with anyone. It's only until Forever we really get the answer to what Selina said, "Why am I doing this?" Simple, it's not to wipe out crime, but to protect and make sure that he is never alone again. To make sure no other child is alone in front of a grave while it rains. Still have no idea how Batman and Robin connects to this, that movie SUCKS!!!!!! One other thing...I think this movie cut out my favorite line between Alfred and Bruce. Alfred: We have to consider security fixing the Batmobile. Bruce: Security? Who brought Vale into the Batcave? Here I am working and then boom ""Oh hey Viki how's it going."
@Duothimir6 жыл бұрын
Linkara explained Batman and Robin's connection to Batman's character arc in his review of that movie's comic adaptation. Basically, it's where Batman learns to accept that there are things beyond his control, and he should cherish the time he has with his new family. Also, puns.
@xgray20126 жыл бұрын
They wanted to water down the movie in a comic book adaptation because off all the dumbass parents' complaints about the actual movie being "too dark and violent" for the kids, even though this is clearly a Tim Burton movie. This is his style. He wants to make everything all dark and wieird in his movies, and we really shouldn't be messing with it.
@xgray20126 жыл бұрын
@@Duothimir Why couldn't they just go for a dramatic tone in Forever and "Batman and Robin" instead of making things all "puns and ass"?!
@xgray20126 жыл бұрын
I think that Batman and Robin is suppose to focus more on Bruce finally embracing the fact that he cannot stop death, especially since he has now started a new family with Alfred and Dick. And while Dick is impulsive and reckless, Bruce is considered that he might get himself killed one day. As for Alfred, he is dying of an illness and Bruce has to accept that death is a part of human nature. I mean, he has been killing lots of criminals in the Tim Burton Batman movies, including avenging his parents' murder by killing the Joker. But, unfortunately, it didn't really solved anything. Bruce's parents are still dead, his relationship with Vicki Vale didn't last very long since he drove her away because of his duel identity and he was left all alone. And that would be a lot more interesting to see in Batman and Robin, if the movie wasn't such a piece of crap, and wasn't focused so much on bad puns, and lame jokes and blatant sexism on Poison Ivy and Batgirl's character designs and personalities.
@CaptainEnglehorn3 жыл бұрын
Yeah no that spiral is what made the movie bad. Catwoman in the comics has never had anything resembling a split personality. The closest to that was like a three issue arc in the early 80s where she reformed but the joker used some scientists machine to turn her back into a criminal. Also……she isn’t really a criminal or even antihero in this. Like I mean yes she breaks laws, but she’s not the jewel thief extraordinaire many adults at movies release would have remembered from their childhoods, nor is she the street tough orphan who can stand on her own two feet as she was at the time in comics in 1992. She was some fan fic Burton came up with.

It feels like this comic adaptation may have been made with an old screenplay draft aided by some production stills, the change in how Catwoman behaves from the movie seems the kind of thing that may have added in a rewrite with the actor and director's input and I bet a lot of visual flourishes might have been added very late in the game hence why they are mostly missing.

The final shot of the Catwoman was a way late addition, which may so explain why Catwoman is both there dead but also not: They where probably working from an earlier cut of the film. One thing that has always bugged me about the movie this comic is based off of is this. How did the penguin manage to get past the Batmobile's defenses? How did he learn the frequency to make the Batmobile roll back it's armor? Where did he even get the plans? This is Batman we're talking about. A man whose infamous for layers of defenses on his stuff and keeping it secret. And you're saying that some how the Penguin just had a way around all of that?
@AT4W6 жыл бұрын
It's relatively early enough in Batman's career that he's not hyper-prepared for every possibility. Finding the frequency to open up the batmobile might not be THAT difficult, especially if they were watching him from afar and planning, trying to pick up on what the frequency was, and the little grin they make when they do it implies they might not have known it would actually work and this was their first try. The signal might not even be a code or anything, just detects a radio transmission on that frequency.

Plus there are few other blockbuster superhero movies that continuously references silent film-era German Expressionism in it's visuals.

I respect opinions because is interesting many points of view. So i will say my opinion: For me the first film is good i really like it but i can see why Burton did'nt liked it, after rewatch it i feel the main focus was the joker/jack nicholson because is colorful and funny but also is insane. That is not bad in fact makes Batman/Bruce an even more mysterious guy since his origin is revealed at the half of the movie, and helps the fact you see more Bruce than Batman on the film. Besides is great many remember it as a retro thing, a big blockbuster, there was a "batmania" The second film is more like a "DC film" meanwhile the first film is a "Batman film"

The scene with Selina and Bruce dancing is beautiful, but I always thought it was hurt by Bruce’s insistence that Selina not kill Max. It always came off as hypocritical, given how this version of Batman kills bad guys with glee. This is one of the reasons Batman should NOT kill people. It makes him a more nuisanced character and adds more depth and complexity to his interactions with other, more bloodthirsty characters. It also makes it less weird that the police are willing to work with him (apparently the cops in Gotham don’t mind if civilians take the law into their own hands and act as judge, jury, and executioner). The movie was so much better. On the other hand, good work with the voices, Linkara!

Not quite, as when he does "kill" usually it is because he has no other option from all I saw.
@jamesadamsfl6 жыл бұрын
No, the writers and director and other such folks said they prefer Batman using lethal force (in fairness, the screenwriter’s excuse was that Gotham was so messed up at this point that it was a necessity). If that wasn’t enough, Batman SMILED before he blew that clown guy up, and you can’t tell me he didn’t have other options to deal with him. In fact, Batman usually does have options beyond killing people ( though, in fairness, I’ll give killing Joker a pass, since Bruce was hanging from a ledge at that point). Also, the first movie never clarified whether or not he purposefully let Jack Napier fall into the acid, which is a bad move when Bruce saw a video recording of Gordon saying Napier could help them take down Grissom. I get that this version of Batman is hardening back to the Golden Age And is meant to be more mentally damaged, and I do like the character overall, but the killing is not handled well.

@@jamesadamsfl you mean the bronze age right? Because the Golden age Batman is all about trying to make the world a better place, this does not mean that he didn't kill at that time but his motivation to fight crime was not because he was psychologically traumatized and wanted revenge or things like this. If you do not believe me go watch the review of Robin's origin that Linkara made.
@jamesadamsfl6 жыл бұрын
Actually, thinking about that, I totally agree; psychologically, this Batman is more like the Bronze Age even if his methodology is more Golden Age (willing to kill, living off old money instead of running Wayne Enterprises or whatever the heck the name of Bruce’s company is, and a little less tech-heavy than he was in the Silver Age and the Adam West show, at least in the first movie)

0:33- Reminds me of the ending of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. 1:34- About as much as The Spirit wants to romance Central City. Since the release of Batman Begins, I've wondered how the hell Penguin got his hands on the Batmobile's blueprints. Did he bribe someone at Wayne Enterprises' applied sciences division? *EXPLAIN, MOVIE! EXPLAIN!!* 5:13- Still better than Sean Young. =D 7:36- Along with saying that all Mexicans are rapists. What? No "GARBAGE DAY!" reference with the umbrella machine gun scene? 9:38- Yeah, Hot Wheels made a 1:50 scale toy version of The Penguin Duck. 10:26- At least, according to Alfred in the Justice League movie, Penguin updated to using *exploding wind up* penguins instead of real ones. 14:43- Fun fact: Catwoman's head in the final shot, according to the DVD special features, was a last minute thing the filmmakers did before they released it to theaters. I love the addition of Alfred-kara to go along with Bat-kara in this episode. BTW, looking forward to seeing a possible review of the Catwoman movie comic on the Comic Adaptation Month you've got planned. 17:12- Well, with a sub-par comic adaptation like Batman Returns...it's working.

Do you think the writers of this movie were inspired by the episode of the 60s Batman series where the Penguin ran for mayor?

Even with the ideas you bring up, I am still not a fan of the movie. Despite Batman having gained nothing from getting his revenge on the Joker, he still gleefully kills members of Penguin's gang when he doesn't need to. Yet he still goes and tells Catwoman to kill Shreck. Thanks to Batman killing people it just makes him look like a giant hypocrite. Hell he's proven wrong about letting Shreck go since right after he does, Shreck shoots and nearly kills him and Catwoman. Is this movie trying to say that revenge is wrong or not? Because Catwoman outright states Shreck has hurt far more people than just her and he deserves to die for it. Batman's only counter is that revenge won't make Catwoman fell any better, despite having killed people earlier in the movie. And because of the whole argument, they both get shot while Catwoman marching towards Shreck despite her bullet wounds is played up as a moment of awesome where we should be cheering for her. Something wasn't an issue in the original movie that became more of an issue here is that Tim Burton didn't like Batman as a character, hence giving more focus to the villain. That worked in the original movie by setting up Batman as a very mysterious character, but in this he just feels like a bit player in his own movie. He only gets a couple scenes with Selina to set up their dynamic, and in the climax he's practically deus ex machina who exists to easily and anticlimactically thwart all the Pengiun's plans in quick succession. If the Penguin's last two schemes were going to get thwarted so easily, then what was the point of having them? The Penguin, didn't gel with me. It feels like Tim Burton was going too far on trying to make him a monstrous character and a sympathetic character. We are supposed to sympathize with him, but despite his backstory the Penguin spends most of his screen time being a complete jerk to everyone around him, even his adopted family. We even see him nearly send all his penguins to their death, before suddenly acting like he cares about them even though again, he even though he sent them all to get blown up. This movie I feel is a case of what can go wrong when you give a director to much freedom. Tim Burton being allowed to do whatever he pleased after the original movie meant he included a lot more bizarre shit with the feeling he was doing so because he could, and further demoting the film's title character to the side lines in favor of the movie's villains, the only one of which I liked was Catwoman. Also, that Catwoman movie. Argh. Regardless of what anybody thinks of my post, we can all agree that movie is garbage. The only way these adaptations of comic movies could get any worse is if Linkara had to review an adaptation of Fan4stic.
@ghidorah156 жыл бұрын
I have to say I agree. The movie is too fundamentally flawed; like you said, Burton doesn't like Batman as a character, and it hurts the story.

I actually liked the Catwoman movie but yeah it was garbage. And why the hell did they not even have that /be/ Selina? Not even kidding it's some girl named Patience Phillips that basically has happen to her what Selina went through here. What was the point?

@@voicedubgaming2286 My guess is the movie was not planned to be an offical Catwoman movie but then was made into one. Kind of like how POTC 4 was an entirely differn movie/book and they just added Johnny Depp to it
