Did... did they really cut one of the best bits in the movie? The bit where, after Two-Face demands Batman reveal himself or let hundreds of people die, Bruce immediately stands up and shouts that he's Batman, only to be drowned out by the panicked screaming and clamoring of the understandably freaked out crowd? That was a very powerful moment that spoke volumes about Bruce's character, and they apparently didn't put it in the comic! What the hell?!

One bit I really liked in the movie was when Two-Face did the circus scene, Bruce IMMEDIATELY stood up and tried to yell he was Batman to him, only to be drowned out by the screaming crowd.
@tunafour-shoes46183 жыл бұрын
On an unrelated note. I actually really like the scene at the circus when Bruce gets up and yells that he's Batman. I love this because it shows him willing to sacrifice the position of Batman if it means saving people. It makes him, in my opinion, more heroic than the bat-dick he tends to be written like. There is a similar scene in The Dark Knight where he's prepared to admit he's Batman, but doesn't have to. Here he stands up and screams that he's Batman, but no one hears him because of the pandemonium.

I believe the comic industry's problems really started in the 80's. The direct market lead to them focusing only on people already reading comics. This lead to more stretched out stories, crossovers, etc. because they no longer had to worry about unsold issues. It also meant consumers had to be specifically looking for comics and wouldn't normally come across them during a typical shopping trip. The customer base kept getting older and smaller as more people dropped out than came on. Then they started really pushing that existing customer base with price increases well above the inflation rate and more issues to tell less story. One of Linkara's early video reviews, Amazons Attack is a perfect example. A Wonder Woman event where most of her story takes place in her solo title and it all is ultimately just a Countdown tie-in. It was about getting completists to buy more.

The whole argument about their current decline has lately turn into an ugly political debate, Ignoring the fact that people have focus more on movies, tv and now digital media since they are more accessible and cheaper, as oppose to overprice short issues. Even growing in the late 90's I didn't know anybody who read comics, the only big deal being Spawn amd most of it because of the Toys and movies than the series itself. Fun fact: This comic is actually using the original scene order. Dennis O'Neil preferred the original cut of the film to the cut we actually got, so he based the comic more off of that original cut (But was unable to put in some of the really dark elements of the original cut). This is how the original script and cut flowed, which is why the scene restructuring makes more sense here than the weird scene reordering in the other comic adaptations did.

@nawf43725 жыл бұрын
It's not dead yet, just in decline. The big trade issues have been keeping the medium alive for a while, though as LInkara noted that means there are less oneshots and everything has to be part of a storyline, but I think what DC is doing, making a streaming service that has both Tv shows and comics, is going to get more people casually reading comics and that will increase demand for more oneshots. Honestly, half the reason manga is so popular is rampant scanlation making a ton of series available online for free. Then because the licensing companies come down on the site, or because fans want to have better quality versions of those series or they just really like them and want to support the series, fans go and buy the manga in the store. WEbcomics are similar, but on a more legit scale: people read for free online, the creator gets some ad revenue, and if the fans really like it they'll get the physical copies of the series. If the Big Two could just be satisfied with just making ad revenue from their individual issues online, they could really expand their base and still make a lot of money from selling collections and merch.

With that bit any comics becoming less relevant, it reminded me of an argument I made as to why manga was outselling American comics (as someone who is more of an anime fan, but has an appreciation for comics) If you want to start reading Iron Man, the question of where to start is a bit tricky. You can start with stuff from his debut, but it can be unrepresentative of the character nowadays. You can pick up a modern issue, but there's a lot of continuity across multiple series that makes it a bit harder to get into. You can look up good, self contained runs (which is arguably the best way to do it) but that does require more external research, which is another step between you and actually reading the comic. If you want to start reading Naruto, you pick up volume 1, which is still in print, and continue reading volumes. Now honestly, I think the fact that there is this giant interconnected universe of characters is really cool and a unique part of superhero comics. But it does sacrifice accessibility doing that, and while that absolutely can be something that is worth it to get into, from what I've seen through Linkara, it feels like comics have reached the point where they've sacrificed too much of that accessibility to convince a new reader to get in.

While true I think the other factors that linkara brought up are good factors as to why people are turned off by the medium. A few years ago, wanting to support the industry, I did start buying individual issues of comics but stopped after about a year because it was getting too expensive. I mainly stick to trades now but even then I've been doing it less and less since they take so long to be released and I lose interest. To get my comic fill I just got a shonen jump subscription since for what I would pay in monthly comics I get a year of access to manga with new releases weekly.
@kimifw585 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but they won't. I think the issue-to-issue format is the main problem. If the series were released in trades to begin with, they'd be a lot easier to follow. People are busier than they used to be. They don't have time to track down all the issues. That's why novels are more popular. That and the persistent belief that graphic novels are strictly for children.

I sincerely believe Superhero comic books are less popular because they got stolen by the adult readership in the late 80's. I would NOT let my 11-year-old nephew read Death of the Family even when he asks me directly about the books on my shelf. He loves Batman, but I can put on a Batman animated tv series or movie without any issue, I can't go down to a store and just pick the latest issue of Detective Comics off the shelf for him.

18:11 You’d be surprised how much can be learned about a criminal’s psychology from a single piece of evidence Linkara. In fact there are many criminal psychologists who have correctly deduced the mannerisms and habits of criminals from a few pieces of evidence. In fact Chase Meridian(?) says she is a criminal psychologist in the film, which means it isn’t far fetched for her to learn that information from a single riddle. Granted the movie did a poor job explaining that but still

2:20 Then, there's the recent launch of DC Universe. This is a service for not only shows, but comics as well. 2:35 Suddenly, you turn to comic review/recap channels on KZbin to help you stay updated. 9:50 Everybody knows someone like this, be it in their family or fandom of their choice... 14:25 Well, it IS Joel Schumacher... 15:12 "3D fish?! You unethical bastard!" =D 15:32 And now, one of my favorite lines from the Rifftracks: "3D fish?! You unethical bastard!" 18:10 So...the writer of Heroes in Crisis, then. 18:20 "I prefer the term Tom Cruise."

Is one of those comics this “Movie adaptation month” gonna be the comic adaptations of the TF (Michael Bay) movies? Cause while it would be SO much better to spotlight the mainstream IDW TF series, spotlighting some TF comics in general would be fun, even though I know you’ve done it before with the old Marvel TF comics.

The market for comics is continuing to shrink due to constant crossovers, controversies (looking at you secret empire), failure to expand outside of comic stores, rising prices, and it seems like there's so many books n spinoffs that seems to be flooding the shelves. When books cost $5 and you don't know what's good nor have something consistent that you dont have to buy 5 more books, no duh the industry is shrinking.

The Magical Robot Prisma When both DC and Marvel, makes billions upon billions on movies, tv, shows, cartoons, and digital books...they are fine. What gets hurt are the brick and mortar comic book stores, it's harder for the sellers if not many people are buying comics.

Honestly? I'm not actually a comic reader myself, though I'd like to be, and this is one of the reasons why. I hear a lot about different storylines with the superhero comics second-hand through sources like Linkara, and they sound like something I want to check out, but I also know myself. I know that I couldn't just follow a single series/book/run, but I would also want to check out the crossovers and the other, previous series with the same characters just to "get the whole story." Problem is, most of these stories go back for over 50 years, and some, such as Captain America, nearly a century, and a LOT of them are out of print, and all of that is without bringing up the incredibly tangled timeline of when each book/story arc takes place. Yes, there are digital comics services and scans, but they can seriously add up money and time-wise, as I'm a working adult on a rather-to-extremely limited budget. All in all, because I didn't get into comics when I was a kid or teenager, I ended up kind of "locked out" of comics as an adult when I started finding the stories interesting. Which is a shame, because they seem incredibly fun, and, having gotten into stuff like the MCU, Supernatural, and a few anime series, I know that I have little to no problem with random weirdness, so long as it's entertaining weirdness.

@@AnInsideJoke _Problem is, most of these stories go back for over 50 years, and some, such as Captain America, nearly a century, and a LOT of them are out of print, and all of that is without bringing up the incredibly tangled timeline of when each book/story arc takes place._ That is a popular misconception. The truth is *no one* expects you to read all of it. Every single popular series, since their inception, has been redesigned, relaunched and retconned so much, to go back to 40's Captain America you would gain nothing in comparing it to a modern iteration, aside from superficial similarities. Timelines too, are restarted every decade to make them relevant to the era they are in. For example, Iron Man's Vietnam origins have been modernised to latter conflicts as the decades have gone by. Generally speaking, a single timeline lasts 5 -10 years maximum. There is *NO* storyline for any major character from Marvel or DC, that has continued uninterrupted since their inception. Batman of the 40's has only a passing resemblance to the Batman of today etc etc

Can confirm, webcomics are very popular and the ones I follow are very, very good. If I had the funds to be a patron, there's a finished, physically published one that I'd make regular requests for that'd be pretty difficult for you because it's good.

That speech at the beginning applies quite a bit to a major point of Mother’s Basement’s “Why SAO is a Terrible Game Too” video. Namely, how the player base is SAO was lower than even those general sales numbers for comics you mentioned. As he put it, good sales numbers for a book, tantamaount to apocalyptic for a game, especially on that scale.
