Thing is, Norwegians aren't just taught english from a young age, we are constantly exposed to it. After American products started becoming really popular in the 50s and 60s, there was a growing trend of importing movies and TV shows and adding norwegians subtitles to them, only dubbing the shows meant for children too young to read. As someone born in the late 80s, I think 50% of all the movies I've watched on television since I was old enough to read have been American and another 20% have been English/Australian. My father who was born in the early 50s used to listen to English music in his adolescence and he had no problem understanding the lyrics in spite of not having any subtitles for them and he quickly adapted to not require subtitles for movies and radio shows either. True, there are a few people who do not speak english, but they are almost exclusively people who still remember when there were Nazi soldiers marching through the streets. Even if there were noone else but Norwegians at the station at the time period of the movie, the worst case scenario is that the ones who did speak english would be heavily accented, which might make communication slow, but not impossible.

The next time you're watching _The Thing,_ pay close attention to the dog. Usually when a dog (especially an energetic husky) meets a new group of people, it's gonna be dashing from person to person in an attempt to make friends. "Hey! New person! I love you! Hey! OTHER new person! I love you too!" 🐶 But the dog in this movie will slowly, meticulously cross a room while avoiding eye contact, his head down, eyes straight-forward. He's casing the joint, while also being careful to not call attention to himself. Then when he's later put into the kennel, he's afraid to go into this cage filled with these (for all he knows) ravenous beasts. Any other dog in this situation would probably be jumping from butt to butt to do a little social sniffing, or maybe if he's feeling nervous, he'll make himself look smaller and tuck his tail between his legs. But THIS dog just keeps staring forward, completely oblivious to what he should be expecting, or how a dog is SUPPOSED to behave in this situation. I don't know how you direct a dog to act like it has NO IDEA how to dog, but it's just brilliant.

Norwegians are taught engish in pre-school, and have english continuously through high school and later, it gets kinda hard to forget. But if they truly were on an isolated station with no one but Norwegians, it would crack up a little. They would still be able to talk, but it would probably be heavy accented, and they'd slip words from time to time
@MGDrzyzga9 жыл бұрын
Random thought: maybe the difference in M.O. for the Thing between the prequel and its predecessor is because the Thing learned from its mistakes in the prequel? That it only behaved like it did in the classic film because it realized its more direct approach in the prequel didn't work? Just spitballing here.

I would say that makes sense. It barely escaped from a group of civilians by going full frontal...so now lets try the stealth route especially as they seem to have more weapons
@aros00186 жыл бұрын
It does make sense story-wise, but there's still the problem of how interesting it is for a movie-viewing audience. For example, it makes sense that Freddy Kruger would be a more basic serial killer before he died, but it's not as interesting as when he died and becomes a dream killer. It makes sense that the Thing is more of a reckless, rampaging monster in the prequel, but it's still not as interesting as when it's hiding and using stealth and tact. The Thing learning from its experience with the Norwegian base is a great concept, just not one that needed an entire movie dedicated to showing it.
@bigmetroidfan12633 жыл бұрын
But The Thing showed intelligence in the prequel by cleaning up the shower when Kate Lloyd discovered the blood. It doesn't make sense to have it show intelligence by cleaning up the shower but then have it be a mindless killing monster after that scene. Not only is the mindless killing alien angle contradict how the alien functioned John Carpenter's The Thing but it also contradict the scene in the prequel where the alien cleaned up the shower.
@nicolasgarant91242 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't think so. Because like, clearly this is a species that has enough intelligence for space travel, so obviously it seems like it can think. And I would be very surprised if that was that species first rodeo with assimilation. My own theory being that they ended up here in search of intelligent life to add into their own because there wasn't anything left in their own region of space. Point is, if it can travel all that way, I doubt this would be their first time trying to assimilate a species.
@johnalogue98327 жыл бұрын
You know, the ship could've been made of a highly destructible material on purpose. Maybe it was a capsule intended to quarantine the Thing, or the aliens would revert to the primal "thing" form if isolated in hibernation on an alien world and they intended to protect other races from themselves, or the Thing could've stolen the ship to spread itself and the ship was just designed to burn up if disabled so a primitive species wouldn't be accidentally "uplifted" by the discovery of the craft. They could've just used future shield whatever to protect the ship from being burned up accidentally, or not used it in atmospheric conditions.

3:37 I feel bad for the effects folks that worked on that prequel. There's behind the scenes footage that showed them working on a lot of practical effects, suits, monster props & stuff. I think the Thing's actions during the prequel make it's actions during the original make sense. It was probably not all there mentally or physically what with having been frozen for a couple of millennia and when in woke up it was probably more concerned with just replenishing biomass or whatever so it tried the brute force method several times over and ended up losing in spite of being stronger, harder, better, faster. So it tried a subtler approach when it arrived in the American camp. Not that this makes the prequel any less shitty it's just a thought.

They DID discuss the possibility of infection in the prequel. Before they drilled the tissue sample out, Kate suggested that they sterilize it first. And honestly, was the stupidity really that unexpected? In the '82 film, the Norwegian pilot dropped his active grenade, and tried to pick it up instead of running away, and got himself blown up for being a complete moron. Also, if those characters WERE more competent, then they would've stopped the creature right then and there and saved us the '82 film. Can't we just assume that the incompetence was intentional?
@cobrasphere97608 жыл бұрын
It could have been the characters who lived the events before The Thing realized too late the alien was a shapeshifter. And since apparently there were characters who talked two differents languages at least, there could have been a lot of mistrust created by events The Thing actually did, if it chose not to appear in front of everyone. The researchers would have been like Linkara, Harvey, 90's Kid and Linksano when they couldn't get out of their house/appartment, thinking one of them was not who he pretended to be.
@AlluMan968 жыл бұрын
The prequel kinda shot my theory in the shitter. I always imagined the invasion was very sudden on the first outpost. Notice how he only carried a rifle and a grenade? He obviously had less experience with the Thing than Macready's group, otherwise he'd have had something flammable or corrosive to kill it cell by cell. Remember that line of dialogue from the movie; "And if you were all those *things,* then you'd just attack me now. So some of you are still human." Perhaps that could've been what happened at the original outpost. The creature must have been capable of taking that team more silently and attempted to dominate the human minority, it retreating when things went wrong. It's a theory filled with holes, but it would explain certain things about it's behaviour. Having something like that just happen and then have to go chase it in the Arctic within a 24 hour span could leave you in quite an unstable state of mind.

I recently saw the Howard Hawks version, and the only scary part was finding the dead dog in the compartment. Admittedly, the stuntman catching fire was pretty cool, and the camera not showing the thing getting up as it thawed was done better in the film than in the book, but still, the thing's spaceship having recently crashed takes away the alieniness. Plus, because the thing doesn't assimilate its victims and instead uses their blood for sustenance and reproduction is cliche, in that it's derivative not only from vampires, but from the novel the War of the Worlds. Anyways, I could go on but case in point, I'm in full agreement with your opinion Linkara! I absolutely adore Carpenter's The Thing. It is indeed much scarier than the Hawks version, especially when taken into account how the thing has no definitive form, which makes it something like the blob. Really like the review of the comic as Iooking back to when I read it online a couple of years ago, the design of the thing as described in the book is silly looking, as this has me scratching my head as to why the characters don't just calling it Triclopes, Red-Eye, Worm-head or Greenface?! The one thing I can't blame the prequel film for at least can't blame all the people actually working on the movie. As they spent a lot of time and effort making sure that the entire film would use practical effects. And seeing some behind the scene stuff about it they looked really good. Yet the studio came in to check on all of it and said "Ohh none of this looks realistic enough and that when you look at all the effects from certain angles you can clearly tell they aren't real". Well no fucking shit it's called filming things from certain angles to hide such things which is what they told the studio. And they just said no that won't help enough people will tell they aren't real. Because yea special effects are so totally impossible to tell if its real or not. So what happened is that they had to then give the film to some company to do the effects with minimal time and due to that its why a lot of the forms it changes into look so generic or bad. Because the team had very little time so they had to just go with generic things or just things that were very messy looking and hard to tell what it even was. Not saying the film would be great if that wasn't the case as a lot of the problems would still be there. But it would at least look so much better staying true to the original in terms of the effects. And I'm also sure they had to rewrite some of the film due to not being able to use the practical effects.

Hey Linkara, did you know in 1972 there was ANOTHER adaptation of Who goes there? It has about as much to do with the book as the 1952 movie, but I watched it an it wasn't half bad. (Peter Cushin and Christopher Lee. ) Its called Horror Express. Basically, a scientist finds a frozen caveman in the mountains of china, sticks it on a train to europe, it wakes up and absorbs peoples minds through their eyes, and when its life is in danger it transfers its mind and powers to a new host. (Because its really an energy based alien that needs a host.) I know it's silly but its the same quality you'd expect from a Hammer Horror film, and we get Peter Cushin and Christopher Lee teamed up as the good guys for once. It's on youtube for free!

Now while I do disagree with your reasoning, I can't imagine the water that the ice in this picture is made of is very murky given how clearly we can see the details on the ship.

There was also a sequel in video game form. John Carpenter even said it's canon.

At the time, revenue had gone down significantly at Blip, so it was necessary to start adding midrolls to videos. Once Patreon rolled around, the $1000 mark was to end midrolls in videos. I've been bringing midrolls again for certain videos, but only stuff that's really long that I would normally break into multiple videos, like the storyline compilations or PO Unboxing ones.

atop. I like to think that in the prequel the thing showed itself because it was newer to the environ and in the next movie it was smarter.

Small correction that nobody really cares about; The Thing 1982 is not a remake of The Thing from Another World. They are just both based off the same story.

15:31 it looks like the original short story collection's cover I guess
@deadaccount75206 жыл бұрын
I'm going to guess this is probably closer to "who goes there" than either film. I prefer the BW version and some of this like the thermite destroying the ship are the exact way its done in the first film. But the creature doesn't assimilate in that film. I'm sure the special effects limitations of the time forced the change to a "carrot man". So the comic seems like a merging of the original and the remake.

I like the thing prequel yes I agree horrible decisions made it into a messy movie -They were going to use practical effects and CGI, but someone said no just use CGI -The bunch of deleted scenes that should be kept in the movie -If you watch the movie it seems heavenly inspire by the game, more than the Carpenters movie the way the thing behaves and acts

Not really. More just a followup to First Contact and one of the better Borg related episodes in the Star Trek franchise.

90% of Norwegians (5.1 million) speak English. Norwegian only slightly beats it (5.3 million). Given a random Norwegian and a random person from the United States, the Norwegian is more likely to be fluent in English. We only have 78.1% fluent in English in the US.

Hey, Linkara, this makes me want to ask, why don't you review more silver age comics outside of Secret Origins Month? You know, just for a week for a comic that's good for some easy laughs.
@cobrasphere97608 жыл бұрын
Maybe that's because the reviews would be kinda the same (That's goofy and stuff). Or maybe to let people believe he hates the Silver Age (they are stupid: How can someone hate a comic that features The Beast God of Xochatan?) And except special occasions, AT4W is supposed to talk about the bad comics and I don't know how talking about how the Silver Age comics would be useful since there were things people just don't do any more although that's why Stan Lee incarnation of the DC heroes is cool (some of them).
