Jonathan's obsession with the new iMac form factor is fascinating. I can't say I understand it, but I'm happy for him that he finally got an upgraded model. Also, working with one screen isn't that weird. I've learned to do it over the last few years primarily because of my need to reduce the number of heat producing devices in my space.

I purchased the orange as well at the end of December after much thought. I have a PC laptop and a base M1 MacBook Air for the work I do. I don’t travel much anymore and the iMac was the perfect replacement to my 12 year old PC behemoth tower. The tower had various upgrades and I was over it, and Windows. So far the iMac has been great for the photo editing and basic video editing I do. I did max out to the 24mb RAM to ensure no regrets as I know I will make this last a while. The biggest benefit has been the minimal space and it’s so quiet. Bliss.

I like the idea of the iMac. It is a great machine for minimalistic setups. Personally, I prefer modular setups though, which is why I went with a Mac Studio M1 Max. I prefer modular setups, so in the future I can just upgrade the Mac Studio and not have to pay for a new monitor, keyboard, etc. When buying a new iMac, you are paying to replace what could be a perfectly fine display, just for a faster chip. Which makes sense for some, but not for me.

one of the major selling point of imac is its screen in pre apple silicon era, however, that no longer holds true when i can get better miniled, oled, or led screen with mac mini undercutting imac's price in hundreds of dollars. the presence of an all in one is not that competing suddenly. i really wish apple to roll out a better screen solution as it has been in earlier years, which was the sole reason I prefer buying macs over windows laptops.

The thing that drives me insane with Mac is the anemic storage on the base models. I obtained a Base m1 MacBook air, and generally as a little work machine for lite tasking it's great, but the meager 256gbs of storage is abysmal. Otherwise it's the perfect little tasking device, but I have to carefully manage what I have installed on it. I'm not running games or editing video, so the 8GBs of ram while uncomfortable, doesn't actually cause me any issues. Most of what I am doing is typing and reading anyway. It's snappier than my old intel macbook pro, but can't do as much or install as much at once. An odd trade off. But, it cost me nothing, as I traded my xbox that I haven't used in a year for it. I gotta say I'm getting really tired of the sentiment on these tech channels about base model macs. Especially as far as to say they're not suitable for grandmas lol. Of course these people are going to have a bad impression of 8gb RAM when they're editing 4K pro-raw footage... but guess what, 95% of people aren't going to do that. The base model M series macs would be more than fine for the majority of people, and would probably last for the rest of grandma's life (to be literal, not dark). This of course doesn't excuse apple's RAM scam, and that the base models should have more than 8GB in 2023. But the fact remains that these tech channel's judgments are a bit skewed/biased for most people.

Those Davinci Resolve export times are very suspect... The difference between the m1 and m2 isn't relatively that large, yet the jump from m2 to m3 is _massive._ What's sus is how the m3 has 16GB of ram, which is double what either of the older generation mac devices you tested the export with. Is there another iMac m3 configuration you could have instead tested, but with 8GB of ram instead? I would _very_ much like to see the export times on that, compared to the other 8GB configured Macs...

I've been living the single monitor life since about late 2018 as well and really do like it, even on my Windows machines. My employer at the time offered LG's 5K monitors to employees, but you could only have the one and my desk felt oddly cramped with the laptop on a stand. I originally picked two 27" 1440p monitors, but plugging both in to different sides of my MBP along with a power cable and a USB-C cable for my phone, it was annoying having to unplug four things every time I went to a meeting or home for the evening. Swapped to the single 27" 5K display since I could plug everything into the back of the monitor with one cable running to the laptop and it was so much nicer. Virtual desktop management with macOS is really nice, even if you're using a Logitech MX Master like I prefer, to the point I really didn't miss having a second display but loved having a much cleaner setup. This would prove useful when the pandemic hit and my 60" wide desk at home had to play host to my personal desktop and work setup, each occupying one half of the desk, and it's been that way ever since.

Almost one year later, I just did it. I bought it with 24GB RAM, because of music production and I didn't regret it. The M3 is pretty fast and what I am mostly like is the silence of the iMac, when you are working with it. Yeah, I know some other All in One PCs does have it too, however, normally you can say, after two years the performance decreases obviously. Over years I bought new ones and spend a lot of money. That's one reason why I choose an iMac, finally. So many told me, you should buy more an Macbook and not an iMac, but these are personal matters. For Music Producer this one with at least 24GB RAM is totally fine and before I forgot...I did buy the yellow one or should I say more gold one? However, the current setup still works great for the music I make and I have a beast PC for the rest of my work. I don't have to do video editing however and, if I did, that would be the clincher. I would have to upgrade. Superb video Jonathan and many thanks for making me realise there is no rush to upgrade and, if I do upgrade, it will be to the M3 or - more likely - the M4 when that finally drops next year or whenever. I love the Mac for so much creative work, but as a workhorse for everyday crap, my Corsair One with a 3080, 64gb and i9 processor is fine. Actually, more likely to get a macbook pro and just use an external monitor if I upgrade but I sure do love the sheer elegance of the iMac. Nowadays it's 4K and 50-100mpix all the way and yet they market 16gb's as something usuable...

@@matuszewskistudio Pretty much. My current laptop is one that is almost 5 years old at this point. A low power cpu with no gpu and costed around $600 USD. It still had 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD which was acceptable with those specs. But today, 1TB of storage with 32GB of RAM is what I'd personally have as a minimum.

One often overlooked factor in upgrading tech is the power saving (less so in some countries with cheap electricity), those watts per hour saved sure do add up and is one aspect nobody covers in reviews. Maybe have a look into that - how much power did you save replacing two systems with one? A fair bit and in some countries, that alone would have made the upgrade cheap as sell old systems+saving on electricity, in some countries that's a profit. How well did it pan out for you overall?

Quick math - if you save 100 W (which you don't), 8 hours a day, times 250 days = 200 kWh. In my country that's about 50 bucks a year. I would rather save like $190 upgrading 8GB of RAM.

@@theEskalaator 8 hours a day for many is a quiet day. Also, he removed a whole system, so more than 100 watts were saved in this instance. I also recently replaced an FX6350 and GTX750 with a Ryzen 5 2400g B450 (budget upgrade for the system) and that saved a bit over 130watts comparing the Ryzen peak usage to the older system idle desktop. The odds of saving exactly 100 W would be slim, though I could add some HD's and reduce the savings to possibly hit 100 W, I'm not that smug. It's a Mac, upgrading the RAM (which you can't) is not an option.

Commenting from a fully functional 2012 Mac Mini here - the current iMacs are *not* your grandma's PCs. Mac computers have gotten infinitely more affordable now than they've been at any point in history, Intel models especially. As anecdotal example, from this 2012 Mini with 16 gb of upgradable ram, I can: -Browse the internet without slowdown -Do some light gaming (good enough for Dolphin Emulator most times, though not enough for Portal 2 at higher than 30fps) -Perform productive browser-based tasks across two HD monitors at once at 75hz+ -Have Discord and Steam open at all times without major sacrifice| -Too, run the latest versions of MacOS with OpenCore Legacy Patcher. The computer will get hot, no doubt, but machines as dated as the 2012 Mini are still perfectly capable. Apple's M series computers are specifically made for creative specialists; not for anybody who seriously wants to just work from office applications, who wants to play games, or who wants more than two windows active at once. (8gb of ram as the minimum is steadily becoming a modern form of torture.)

Yesterday on a website appeared a very good deal, the IMac M3 Orange 16Gb 1 Tb for only 1238$, 2 years warranty. I think is a sweet deal, so I bought it. Hopefully I will not return it back. I fully understand you. I specced my 14" M1 Pro so that I could keep it for 5+ years. 32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD. 2 years later it still runs great. With my 2TB of iCloud storage, the 1TB SSD is enough even thought I might have to upgrade the storage within a year.
@racerex340
@racerex340 Жыл бұрын
I think that's completely bananas dude. If I recall, the 14" M1 Pro's with 32GB and 1TB were at least $2600 (maybe $2999, been a while) roughly 2 years ago, then you spend $132 a year for 2TB of iCloud+, You're already $2600 + $264 = $2864 into that system, keep it another three years and your total cost is more like $2600 + $660 = $3260. You will have paid $660 for 2TB of extremely low performance cloud storage that you do not own, you only rent, when very decent 2TB NVMe Gen4 SSD's capable of over 5000MB/s read and write performance are available for under $100, all because Apple cannot possibly give customers a way to upgrade a system, either need them to way overspend at time of purchase for higher specs, or buy the less overpriced base model and find yourself spending $130+ a year on cloud storage. I mean, Apple is still charging $400 to go from 1TB to 2TB in a MacBook Pro or iMac, and I have to imagine that's at least in part due to people comparing the 2TB iCloud cost of $400 for 3 years. I'm glad you paid for the upgrade model and are actually getting good life out of it, I feel terrible for the people who bought 14" M1 Pro's with 8GB and 256GB, or even 8GB and 512GB. Anyone who bought 8GB M1, M2 or M3 Mac's with the intent of doing anything more than word processing and internet consumption got royally screwed, because you can at least plug in Thunderbolt SSD storage and solve that issue somewhat.
@coughfee_beans
@coughfee_beans Жыл бұрын
If you don't think I've already done the math on that you'd be wrong. The problem is that actively use iCloud. The stuff I put on there is available to all my devices at all time from anywhere. I have externals already but it's just not the same. I should spend some time cleaning my laptop at some point but right now it's sitting at 800gb out of the TB and my iCloud is at 1.7TB. So even the 2TB upgrade wouldn't have been enough for everything I have and anyway it definitely wouldn't be safe only available on my laptop at risk of being lost forever. I spend much more on my hair and so many other things so I'm really not bothered by something as useful as iCloud.@@racerex340

I have had some sluggish experiences. Now mostly from a cheaper Bluetooth mouse. I switched to a Logitech wireless mouse and things improved. But browsing with chrome with around 8 tabs (which is not a lot for me) the memory was at 11gigs.... Now I had 32gigs with a 5600 cpu. Never had an issue with it. Makes me want to build another system and do a hackintosh.
