smart move
@sntslilhlpr66014 жыл бұрын
@@mihirmutalikdesai Best way to learn is by doing. This actually isn't a bad place to start as you'll have an end goal to shoot for and a sense of accomplishment when you succeed, instead of just mindlessly studying linux in general which can be quite boring. You can just google the terms used as well as any questions you have along the way about how the pieces fit together or general inquiries about how linux works. And then when you're finished you'll probably find yourself asking a question many of us ask ourselves... what now? I personally don't have a use for macOS so the image just kinda sits there on my server not doing anything... Well, the answer is build another VM. Maybe choose a different linux distro to see what it's like. Maybe run a VM in a VM so you can VM while you VM.

Wow, Supra and the others who commented on this, a year after it was posted don't seem to understand what this video represents. Bootcamp or more importantly running Microsoft Windows on *Apple Hardware* is *NOT* what this video represents. This video takes the MacOS binary (the installer) , and installs MacOS in a virtual machine, running on hardware that Apple's engineering team has never seen!! It is a major accomplishment (and this from someone who worked on MacOS). Virtualization of MacOS has been done before inside Parallels and VMWare - and there are a few instances why you would run more than one copy of MacOS at the same time on a single machine). The most impressive part of this video, is that it uses NVDIA's latest graphics cards with native MacOS, which as of May 2020, is still *NOT* supported even on Apples $50,000 Mac Pro. This is the only way (in 2020) for Final Cut Pro to use NVDIA RTX! Although to be clear the AMD Pro Vega II Duo especially with Apple optimized software is (1) Mac Only (2) Faster than NVDIA 2080 RTX. So the only reason to do this is cost. Kudos to Anthony of Linus Tech .

If you dual boot make sure you don't delete your existing operating system (probably windows). Making a backup is a good idea too. I was told in class that running a VM of MacOS is impossible on my Ryzen desktop, guess my professor doesn't know everything.
@nmindz5 жыл бұрын
I wasn't quite a great experience to even run a macOS VM properly until a few years ago, and AMD builds before Ryzen were even less supported (community-wise) because AMD overall was so much less popular and finding willing and experienced developers with the required hardware to maintain support and test it was also a lot more scarce. Nowadays where AMD has evened the fight with Intel (maybe surpassed.) the support for all things AMD increased astonishingly. It is just a shame that ATI graphic cards have only barely caught up to NVIDIA but not surpassed it still, so I have to say that NVIDIA support on Linux for example is a lot better depending on what you want to achieve. But yeah, running a generic macOS VM on a Ryzen was never quite impossible, it was just not a great experience. On any day you could just give the virtual machine an emulated Intel CPU even while on a Ryzen (that would be slow af) and it would run.

That wouldn't be a fair comparison. Because if your Mac dies or gets outdatet you need to get a new one and throw the old one away. On a homebuild pc you can swap only one part, you can upgrade the cpu and gpu while leaving the motherboard in place, leaving the harddrive in place and leaving the memory in place. Apart from this you can pick the hardware that fits your specific usecase, someone might want a lot of storage and doesn't care too much about performance and vice versa. You can decide how much ram, storage, gpu performance, etc you need, instead of just buying whatever comes with a mac.

Don't get me wrong, it looks like great fun if you want a hobby level project and have Anthony level skills and Linus level hardware, software, and money. So if it was me, I'd just go buy a used Mac to play with, but since I don't like Apple stuff anyway, the main fun of this whole project is it shows that if you have the skills and experience and resources you can play with Apple's toys without permission and also without having to play their games, which is why I don't like Apple stuff in the first place. If they had done it like IBM, or better yet, open sourced their stuff in the first place, they would own the computing world now instead of being a pretentious boutique wannabe computer outfit that's more into their stuff looking cool than working better, ohh, and don't you dare think about playing in their ecosystem unless you buy their overpriced slow but cool looking stuff-from them-only. it's all about specs at some point - enough to overcome the slowdown in the emulation; though it'll always be no one's loss and apple's gain when a MacBook air runs windows faster than any competitor's similarly spec'd laptop, and natively... so it'll be no one's gain when a VM hackintosh runs High Sierra better than a 2012 Mac Pro, that requires hours of custom file edits, driver trackdowns, and mind you - very specific hardware - to make work. basically i wouldn't get so excited unless this is your hobby, if you need the hackintosh for real work, i'd stick with the real thing.

@@IgnorablePanda I disagree. Setting up a proper VM with KVM, on a Ryzen system (maybe Ryzen specific anymore), with PCI Passthrough is not trivial at all. Doing this last year on Arch, I've had to figure out the CPU topology, so I can pin the cores, preventing my Windows threads from drift around. How to isolate devices and why. It was also in Zen's early days, and there were problems with multiple devices getting lumped into the same IOMMU groups, which was fixed via board firmware update. There was also a KVM bug with nested page tables causing horrendous frame rates and stuttering (this was Ryzen specific), so I had to compile a slightly modified kernel after finding and applying a patch for KVM hoping that'd fix the problem without accidentally unchecking critical kernel functionalities. In short, it was a huge PITA, but it stretched my troubleshooting and Linux proficiency to its limits
