There is really no going back. I've got one of these for work and it truly is a productivity machine. One could argue that it'd be much cheaper to just get 2x 27" Dell monitors side by side, but there's something about being able to place your windows anywhere within a 49" space. I always had problems myself with a dual monitor setup or the likes and heard so from other people. Constantly working on one or the other side of the desk puts strain on the spine and neck and can lead to backpain and headaches. Using three monitors (or a similar configuration) not only remedies this problem - if the main monitor is in the middle - it also boosts productivity by over 30% (as opposed to just over 8% with two - according to a study done by Fujitsu, if i remember correctly). When working on a computer for extended periods of time, I'd always go for a config with an odd number of displays. Worked wonders for me.

Having worked for so long on my two Dell U3011 monitors (16:10, 2560x1600), I'm super annoyed by the lack of vertical real estate on these ultrawides. Weirdly, the only 21:10 display out there seems to be the LG 38UC99-W, which for some reason still markets itself as "21:9" despite being a 3840x1600 display. And those 160 extra vertical pixels add up -- that's just over 11% extra vertical space than you'd get with 1440. Imagine trimming the bottom 10% off your display, and you'll understand my annoyance. 16:10 seems like such a sweet spot, I dunno why it's not the default ratio (other than to blame television). 5120x1600 32:10 would be so much more preferable than 5120x1440 32:9. And, it'd get you just 100,000px shy of the same surface area of a typical 3840x2160 monitor.
@tested2114 жыл бұрын
I agree. It's pretty silly as that shallow height really limits the applications it's good for for productivity use. Even to watch a movie you're not going to benefit from much of that 49" width as the vertical height is capping the overall scale so much. I actually prefer shorter monitors ( to 2140 high) as I like the landscape format but 1440 is too short for most work. 1600 is the sweet spot IMO where there's enough pixels for the work and some interface but it's not so high that you're rendering too many pixels or just looking at everything at a larger scale. For now, the 38" ultrawides (3840x1600) are the only decent option for this. Also, this monitor looks like it would have a crazy amount of real estate but if I lay out the pixels in photoshop, it's not actually *that* much more real estate than a 38.

Important note about LG’s 49WL95C-W max Supported Resolution. It is not the same for all interface types: - 5120x1440p for both Display Port and USB-C , but only 3840 x 1080 for HDMI . LG has a poor product description on the site, and does not specify this limitation on the specs (which seems caused by they are using HDMI 1.4 and not 2.0 interface). On the LG monitor documentation (paper), this specification comes clearly detailed in interface matrix chart, but you only see it after buying or if been informed before by seller or any forum. I planned to use both Display Port and HDMI, and this limitation was not suitable at all.Hope that information is useful. I would have been to me if I had it before buying the product.

7:00: Great with a built in KVM switch! How much can be done from the keyboard. Can you decide which device are transmitted to the screen - and likewise in split mode, which two. Or do some of this involve the screen menu (which are tiresome to go through again and again)? My old $600 Dell monitor is great to look at but unfortunately it's awesome in the real sense when it comes to adjustments. Why can't you have a knob for brightness or at least some presets in this regard as well as some presets for input sources. It actually has buttons to support the screen menu, it would only need a few more of these for menu shortcuts and it would be perfect. PS: My first screen was in color. That was amber;) But at least it had two knobs: brightness and contrast. They could be pushed into plane with the cabinet, but nobody did of course. That is, it's not natural to prioritise minimalism higher than being practical. Knobs/buttons don't have the interruptive effect as menus. Menus allow for unlimited choices, but too many buttons on phones, cameras, monitors etc. has been skipped with a price.

In mid 2000's I was running games on ~22" flat CRT with resolution 1600x1200@100Hz and with lower resolutions @120Hz (could go up to 2560x1440@60Hz and could switch resolutions easily, cause CRT do not have that awful native resolution!). I've bought that monitor for 35 british pounds (one of the inputs was faulty)! A few years later I've purchased gaming monitor (27'' widescreen TN panel 1080p@144Hz) for 350 quid! Needless to say, my satisfaction did not increase tenfold. Weaker Black Levels, much weaker contrast, narrower viewing angles and stuck with lower resolution. Slight increase in refresh rate was negligible. What changed for better: widescreen (16:9 instead of 4:3), lighter and slimmer (didn't bother me when situated on my desk), lower energy consumption. Swapping CRT for flat-panel was good for TVs, less so for PC monitors (although perhaps a necessary step to what is coming next). Hmm...I'm sorry, I believe I have digressed here a bit :)

I don't understand why these monitors are only made in 1080 or 1440 vertical resolutions. The best screens I have ever had are Samsung SyncMaster 245B which feature 1200 vertical pixels, and I just LOVE those extra 120 pixels (the taskbar doesn't eat part of your image). Their 24" 1920x1200 monitors are awesome, and I want the same, just wider.

Isn't at this point the better option is to go for more practical monitor and have one back up? Either way, information which you want to keep on your second monitor is either way only 'nice to look sometimes'. It would be weird having a game playing and right next to it, a chrome tab open.

Linus, you're not necessarily correct about this panel being easier to drive than a standard 4K panel. It may actually be harder to drive in some cases due to the increased field of view, meaning the graphics cards has to render more objects (and thus polygons) in the scene at once.
@MattRoszak3 жыл бұрын
Just bought the Dell, and I'm starting to think I preferred having two monitors... The curve is way too weak, looking at the sides isn't very comfortable. And a lot of fullscreen apps don't look great on the ultrawide - they fit much better onto one of two normal monitors. Oh well, maybe I'll get used to it. I'll have to see if there's a way to trick my computer into thinking it is two monitors.
@farishanafiah84612 жыл бұрын
I can understand your point there. Also, those are the only monitor to have IPS LCD panel whereas everyone is sticking to VA panel. Since there is still no 32:9 IPS LCD monitor that support high refresh rate, I will definitely think of going back to two separate monitor solution.

After using an ultra wide monitor for about half a year, I can certainly say that I'd go back to a normal monitor due to many of my favourite games don't take advantage of the extra width and instead cuts off the top and bottom (I'm looking at you Overwatch).

I've been using the Samsung super ultrawide monitor for several months now. I got it on sale and discount for $800. I got it to replace my triple monitor setup. Resolution-wise, it's a downgrade. But upgrade on everything else. 3840x1080 is perfect for gaming especially when you are gaming on 144hz monitor. With my 1080Ti, it can plow thru most demanding game and still manage to run north of 90FPS to 144FPS. It also supports NVidia Freesync after the driver update. Although, Freesync must be set to standard and not ultimate. If you use ultimate, it has flickering issues. If you are a gamer, a cheaper alternative for super ultrawide monitor, get the Samsung version. It also supports HDR as well but I don't use it because I think the entire HDR concept to me is silly. I rather leave it off and have more vibrants colors.

Great video, but one miss are the controls. Especially when using the monitor for work/music production that requires fine adjustments here and there. I currently use an LG 34 inch and the controls are the worst I've seen in years; the small toggle rarely works the first time you press it... So the controls, menus and options would of been great to see even if it's just for a few seconds... Maybe it's just me, but the continuous talk about pixels is getting a bit boring and repetitive... Cheers.

I have the CHG90 and was going to upgrade to the Dell for the higher res. But i've come to love the 144hz of the samsung, and now that Nvidia allows adaptive sync on Freesync Monitors, i dont feel the need to change anymore.
