I think that if it's a stand alone application the original software dev should package it. If it's a component of the operating system, the OS maintainers should package it

When it comes to Linux there is wholle lot of mess and packaging is just one of many messy things.

Packaging is a mess? Really? Maybe you should do a NixOS video? hmmmm? Packaging issues? Dependancy hell? What is that? i use NixOS btw...

NixOS users are the new Arch crowd, except NixOS is actually good but the immutable and reproducible (and isolation) aspects remain unnecessary for 99% of users and just makes things even harder for niche use cases, if it wasn't already bad enough on Linux in general.

Welcome to non-working upstream packages, like in case of compilers which are not re-built against nixOS snowflake behaviors :)

maybe it's better on the stable branch, but in unstable i continuously had packages not build because the dependencies weren't updated yet, so i kept having to mess around with the config and pull packages from stable, but even that sometimes wouldn't work. as much as i love the concept of it, i'd rather have a binary based distro, where updating my system pretty much always goes flawless.

​​​@@juipeltjeyou can mix stable and unstable on nix if you have these issues. I've had occassional problems getting certain packages to work on unstable, like awscli2 was broken at some point, so I just changed awscli2 to stable.awscli2 as a stop gap until it was fixed in unstable, which only took a couple days. Also if that's too much work running stable is probably the best option for you, and if you really need an unstable package you can do the reverse of the solution above by building your system on stable and just selecting a few from unstable.

​​@@Lewdiculousit's a little harder for the average user for now™️, but it's not truly in its final form. Most of the issues come from unpackaged software, but Nix both has the more packages than the aur, and keeps eating other package libraries for breakfast using automated scripts, so eventually every file in the entire universe will be packaged under nix and addressable with Sha256 as Joe Armstrong intended.
