The Lion King is one of the only Disney films to date with close to no references to the existence of human beings. There is no trash on the Serengeti, no airplanes flying over, no fear of poachers, no animals in hats or walking on hind legs. There’s language and imagery that is used from our world, but for the most part, the Pridelands feels completely removed from mankind and today I’m going to explore why that is: why there are no humans in The Lion King.
I post every Tuesday and Thursday, so check back then for more Disney, Pixar, Harry Potter, Star Wars and movie videos! If you have any questions about the Disney universe that you would want answered in a video, please ask away in the comment section!

@@xniaxm2967 You're forgetting about Disney's movie A Far Off Place, which came out about the same time. The movie shows good & bad people among the natives & the whites living there. One of the 3 main characters is a native African man who is portrayed as just a typical guy from a tribe near the preserve, who is a friend to the teen character played by Reese Witherspoon. He is shown to be smart & persistent, showing he knows the land & animals & how to survive. He is shown to be loyal to his friend when she is in need, despite it putting him in danger too & it being vastly inconvenient for him when he already has responsibilities to his wife (& presumably the rest of his family & tribe). He shares wisdom about human nature to the teen boy, showing him to be a perceptive & thoughtful person. While the main point of the story is about him helping the teens escape being murdered by poachers, to me the writers & the actor who portrayed him made him seem like a real person, not a stereotype just existing to be a token black character because the story takes place in Africa. I thought it was a pretty good movie.

notice in Robin Hood, there are no humans either. Its more anthropomorphize-d, but its still all animals. Same for Zootopia. In Bambi as well.....there is an IMPRESSION that humans are around, but we only see the animals.
@CeltycSparrow
@CeltycSparrow 5 жыл бұрын
@Jay hence why I said there is an IMPRESSION OF HUMANS in Bambi. We never actually SEE the humans, but we do hear the gun when Bambi's mother is killed (which transitions into probably THE MOST awkward segues to follow a death scene in ANY MOVIE period.....we hear the shot. Bambi goes looking for his Mother and we see the Great Prince. He tells Bambi that his mother can't be with him anymore and they walk off into the snow.....and then we IMMEDIATELY segue into birds singing and a song so overly vivacious it makes the Owl cringe in horror as he watches the birds snogging in the trees). and then we see the fire at the end that destroys the forest.

I always thought that The Lion King took place on a reservation in Africa that's why Simba and Nala could not go to the elephant graveyard because it was outside the protective boundaries of the reservation and thus where the hunters would be. The Hyena's being banished to the so called "Bad Lands" represents this because they were inside the elephant graveyard when they attacked the lion cubs.

I think The Lion King takes place during Ancient Greece. After the hyenas ate Scar, his soul was transferred to the Underworld. Then, Hades, lord of the dead, revived Scar and offered him a proposition(just like with Jafar): "Help me kill off Jerk-ules, and I will let you become king of Pride Rock, FOREVER." So Scar returned and confronted the Greek demigod, Hercules. But in the end, Scar dies in the hands of Hercules, and gets turned into a "very handsome throw rug". This seems to make sense because there were not as many humans in Africa during ancient times. Plus, Ancient Native African culture seems to fit the tone of The Lion King(via the music, ample use of Swahili words, and the cave art-like style of Rafiki's paintings). As for Zazu knowing famous human songs like "It's a Small World", and Timon and Pumbaa knowing human traditions like the Hula dance and Christmas, I think Aladdin's Genie visited Africa during his world vacation, and taught some Lion King characters about human stuff; but that's just my guess.

I think it's because the Lion King takes place a little before Tarzan. When there are no white people in Africa, and the natives just either keep their distance or they just don't live there (though I really don't see why, the pridelands seem like a great location, there's water, animals to hunt, and with hyenas confibed to the Outlands and lions kinda confined to the area around Pride Rock, I don't see why any tribe wouldn't settle there.) Also a nice theory: The pridelands are a part of Wakanda.

Theory: a long time ago, a man visited the Pride Lands & killed a lion despite the locals warning him not to hunt there for sport. The Great Kings Of The Past then cursed the man by turning him into a hyena, telling him he can only regain his human form by leaving the Pride Lands. Since then, any human who set foot in the Pride Lands would turn into an animal of the African Serengeti that reflects their personality. And a baobab tree grew in the spot where the lion died, which would later be called the Tree of Life (Rafiki’s tree)

I always assumed that they do not and never did (likely due to our particular genetic divergence in primates not occurring). Basically, animals become more intelligent and they flourish because we do not exist in that realm. It would certainly explain the basics pretty easily, and I like the ideas that brings up. A world without humans, but also with no extreme civilization like Zootopia. Makes me wonder about other countries in that world...

After watching a little bit of The Lion Guard, that's my theory as well (and that The Lion King universe is an AU of ours with extremely different laws for nature, which is why the show makes some of the predators that hunt in the Pride Lands bad guys, but the Lion Guard are treated as exceptions).

The Lion King isn’t a fucking plagiarism of Kimba. Do your own research and you’ll notice the two stories are nothing alike besides having a lion as a main character, and that the supposed “troubling resemblances” are nothing but scenes taken out of their contexts. Hell, the movie, that they often use to show the presumed plagiarism in those comparison images, was released after the Lion King, meaning that if there’s one plagiarism, it may be more the Kimba movie doing so with the Lion King.

It's likely in a part of Africa that is more isolated, and probably in a preserve or park. The time setting would also likely be around or past the 1960s, as ''A Lion Sleeps Tonight' was released in the 1960s and and 'A Little Bunch of Coconuts' was released in the 1950s. Timon, Pumbaa and Zazu (and possibly Scar) would have had to had some occasional brush with humans to hear the music somehow and pick it up ( possibly humans having a a portable radio or record player in their camp.) Odds are Timon and Pumbaa encounter them on a periodic basis being wandering exiles, and Zazu being that he flies all over the Pride Lands. It could be that Scar even came across them (at least when he was younger) on his territorial patrols to know the older Coconuts song. Around this time, there likely wasn't as many humans in the area, and it was likely tribesmen or just the occasional white researchers or hunters passing through. Edit: I forgot about migrating birds in Africa. Some of these might pick up the songs or Hawai'i hulu, since many of these can travel hundreds or thousands of miles.

Im gonna claim this was an earlier chapter of history when many regions of the African wilderness were un-touched by mankind. I highly doubt this was set in the 1990s since the whole continent was explored by europeans by the start of the 20th century.

I think humans do exist and Lion King takes place extremely far away from civilization. It's also possible that Simba and everyone know about the humans existence of humans and then choose not to interact with them.
@ozzywalker609

Well, there are a number of plausible theories, but here’s one that I find especially likely: The Lion King takes place in the foreseeable future, where lions are aggressively protected, and lion territory is labeled as government parkland. All intruders are removed almost immediately and the lions live in almost pure isolation. Scar in Hercules? Either Lion King takes place shortly before Hercules, or it was just a classic Easter Egg.

Hey, Isaac. Your videos just keep getting better and better. I have actually wondered myself why there were no humans in The Lion King. However, I originally thought that it was because the lions in The Lion King displayed anthropomorphic human characteristics. You know, that they in some ways behaved like humans. But your theory in this video sounds a bit more understandable and likely, and it also makes things seem less complicated so that the audience could just focus on and enjoy the events of the film. Also, I think one of your next videos should be a full story on Quasimodo, but it's just a suggestion.

Although the theory of LK taking place during ancient Greece's time because of the Scar rug in Hercules, I personally like to believe it takes place in 1994, the year it came out, and that the Scar rug was just a joke. As for the humans, they could just be located far off away. The filmmakers visited Kenya for research so I think the nearest they could go to find humans is in Nairobi, Kenya. Or it takes place somewhere in Tanzania

The funny thing is, I never thought of about why there are no humans in "The Lion King", but I like to imagine what might happen, how Simba might have reacted if he and Mufasa saw a human walking around in the Pride Lands. Would the human be an automatic enemy to be feared and hated, or would he/she arouse simple curiosity? But I think your comments that excluding humans makes TLK more timeless, basically, makes a lot of sense. The lives of humans in the developed world has changed a lot since 1994.

Or Maybe, just maybe. This is a Prequel to Zootopia. Simba after living a life where he ate only bugs realized there are alternatives to eating meat and because of the lessons of the great circle of life, started working with the prey species to build a more civilized Society! That it! Disney theory confirmed.
