$750 is actually a very reasonable price for a steam locomotive with the features this one has. This should be a cue for Lionel to make more steam engines at this price point! So far we have the H10, Ten Wheelers, A6 Atlantics, and B6s.

There is a version that was exclusive to a hobby shop in the Philly area that has Strasburg on the tender. I’m guessing that’s because 972 is sitting in the dead yard at Strasburg.

I noticed the builders plate is wrong as well , This loco was build in Canada by MLW ( Montreal locomotive Works), This loco is a ClassD10J, build in September 1945. my info comes from the book Canadian Steam Locomotives by Omer Lavallee, witch I have a copy signed personally by him in 1985. Omer was a writer and historian for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Montreal Canada

A very nice little engine and it surprisingly looks very close to the D-10 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler that Canadian Pacific employed across their system. Quite a few of these survived after dieselization. 502 were produced by 5, yes 5 different manufacturers in both Canada and the USA. If you want something more...prototypical, Rapido Trains is producing an HO version accurate to the last rivet.

972 was privately owned and the owner paid strasvurg to run it. But when he couldn't afford it they took it from service and it's sat just as a rolling boiler with the drovers on it. They have no plans to restore it anytime soon

5 things to say 1. They might have changed the sound of the dispatcher's voice not like the AC-9s 2. The whistle 3 sounds like the Niagara and number 5 sounds like the Santa fe 2-10-10-2 mallet I told you about 3. The bell sounds are similar to the Frisco 4-8-4 northern you have or something 4. That model is awesome 5. I'm sorry you didn't get the name plates

The 972 used to operate on a railroad I was possibly going to on Memorial in Jim Thorpe, Pa., currently it sits in pieces at the Strasburg Railroad awaiting some form or restoration, whoops just got to that part of the video. If my memory serves correct, in this run there was also a Reading & Northern 225 which was also owned by the same person who owned 972. The number on the 225 I think was changed after being purchased by the Reading & Northern. The 225 doesn’t operate on the R&N, but it does still serve a purpose as it sits in the parking lot of the new southern passenger terminal just outside of Reading, Pa, quite appropriately named after the famed Reading Outer Station.

Strasburg butchered it by trying to add a Belpaire, and 225 looks ugly in the blue. Sunset does an actual D10 in O 3 Rail, but the lionel one is just ugly.

It's probably why Eric zoomed in on the camera thinking people wouldn't catch onto the derialment take of the rollby but our observant eyes always will catch these things LOL just hope the roller didn't derail causing a short on the layout once he was done hitting the record button he probably wouldn't have been happy about that.

Looks like the smokebox and firebox are a different color in the catalog vs on the model. I think it looks better in the catalog image with the dark graphite.

The colour of the letters seems incorrect. CP used a yellow tending to golden, not the fluro yellow shown. Some history... For local and branch line service, over trackage often laid with lighter rail during a period of rapid railroad expansion in Canada, the Canadian Pacific needed a smaller locomotive that could handle both passenger and freight traffic. The 4-6-0 or Ten-Wheeler type met this requirement, and the CPR rostered a large number of these engines in several classes. Most numerous of these was class D10. Between 1907 and 1913 the CPR acquired more than 500 locomotives of this class from the major Canadian builders as well as its own Angus Shops in Montreal. They had 63-inch drivers and 21x28-inch cylinders, and carried 200 pounds of boiler pressure. Weighing 93 tons, they produced about 30,000 pounds of tractive force. Some of these engines were active to the very end of steam operations, and a few D-10 locos remain today as museum pieces.

I got the Canadian Pacific version too and mine didn't have the alternate name plates either, and another person told me in the comment section of one of my videos saying he also bought the CP version and it didn't come with the name plates.

10:30 To be honest, I am disappointed that Lionel went through with the effort of bi color Marker/Class Lights. Bi color represents two colors of course, but they should of called it Tri color lights, and add the red color for the effort they put into it. Red color, represents the last/ final section or block of the train. Scale trains did it with their models in HO, it cannot be hard to do in O scale.
